Welcome to Over-The-Vest Nurseries where we grow over 2,000 different varieties of outdoor garden
plants, ones that have been especially selected for their performance and suitability for our
region, that's the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states of the U.S. Lots of really good plants
and if you'd like to find out more about them, can I suggest that you click and subscribe to
this channel because we're posting new videos all the time and some of them are of exciting
new selections that reach us from various parts of the world. Take for example this very colorful
brilliantly colored in fact form of our Eastern Arborvitae, this is Thuya Yantar. Now I'm calling
it Yantar because this has a European pronunciation. If you look at the name here in America
we'd probably call it Yantar, and that kind of really brings me to the point about pronunciation
of plant names. It really doesn't matter what way you pronounce them as long as you obviously get
the name accurate, because when you're looking at a variety like this it's very important that you
get the right one, because this is simply a really beautiful brilliantly colored conifer that will
give you interest throughout the entire year and changes color too. Now during the summertime
it will have a brilliant bright yellow color and all the time producing this lovely shapely habit
and then as the temperatures begin to cool down and the days shorten you'll notice how the plants
begin to take on a slightly orange tint, and then as they go into the depth of winter they actually
start to take on a bright amber shade too, and that leads again back to the name because the name
Yantar means amber in Polish. You see this was a selection that turned up on a nursery ran by
Jakub Jabolinski in Lysomys in north central Poland. He found this to be a sport of the very
commonly grown and highly admired shapely one called Emerald Green or Thuja Smarag. He found
this as a sport and we really like it because of its bright color, because of its shapely habit,
but also that in all the years that we've been looking at multiple sports, this is probably
the most colorful and the best form that we've ever come across as a golden sport of Thuja Emerald
Green. Now around about now you're probably wondering how fast does it grow, how big will it
get? Well of course that is something that depends upon the growing conditions and the nutrition of
the soil. Growing them here on the nursery we've noticed them to grow about six to eight inches
maybe ten inches a year, and therefore over a period of time it's not unreasonable to expect
these plants to get somewhere about six to ten foot high. That said, it has the capacity to grow
taller than that, I would say perhaps somewhere around about 15 foot tall, but remember that this
sort of Arborvitae responds really well to shearing, and if you wanted to, you could probably go in
in early spring and then perhaps even during the growing season and give it a trim back, that will
help to keep it extra shapely and bushy, it will also help to reduce the size of it, and so you'll
be able to keep it as a smaller, more shapely, and certainly a very brightly colored addition to your
garden. It's a plant that is very hardy to zone for, developed from a native species as I say,
here's one that you can use either as a single specimen, you could use it in a group to make a
very effective display, you could certainly use it as a screen or a hedge, and also it's a plant that
really makes a very nice plant to put into a container too, something that you could put into
a pot and stand by the front door, or indeed anywhere around your home, and it will produce
this brilliant color right through the whole of the year. Easy to grow in a well-drained, and that's
important, in a well-drained soil, in a sunny site, this is without doubt one of the most brilliantly
colored forms of the Eastern Arborvitae, this is Thuya Yantar.
