As a self taught oil painter, I haven’t ever ventured into the world of 3D art.. until now! I had a lot of fun throwing myself in the deep end with the challenge of sculpting a human head with air dry clay. I should probably apologise to any sculptors watching for my minimal research and many mistakes! Hopefully more of a laughable watch than purely frustrating🙈
So in this video I'm going to be attempting to
sculpt a bust with air dry clay and I just want to start by saying I've
never actually sculpted anything before or used clay of any
kind so I'm aware that I'm throwing myself
in the deep end with trying to sculpt a human head but I got gifted
this clay for Christmas and I've been putting off doing anything
with it because I truly don't know what I'm doing
so I thought the best way to learn is just to give it a go
and then if I enjoy the process even if the outcome's not great
maybe I could try again with some higher quality clay because it's not
it's nothing special. I don't know why I'm acting like I don't know how this
goes I've already done it and I'm filming
this intro so I'll see you at the end and let you
know my thoughts
No you'll get it in your eye and then you'll get cancer
I'm not sure how much I've said already because this is the first thing I'm
filming but I've got my base for the bust and
with my minimal research I think I watched one
video and realised I don't have wire I don't
I'm just going to use foil and I've got my little
MDF circle and I'm going to hot glue the foil in a ball
on this and I've got wine I don't usually have wine but
we're celebrating because I just got my MRI results
I don't know why we're celebrating because I have a bulging disc it was my
mum's idea and I'm not going to say no
what is this like the underpainting the
the basic structure that I'm going to be packing clay onto
I've got this like basic starter pack like a sculpting
starter pack that I got for Christmas as well as my
air dry clay I'm going to put this down on the surface because I
feel like this is going to get messy and then I've got a bowl for some
water and I'm just going to wing it I'm just
going to play with some clay and see what
happens I've also got my portrait reference that I got from
lovelifedrawing.com they do like really good selections of
reference packs so I've just found a portrait
pack and it's got the head from all different angles which I'm going to need
oh it's a lot harder than I thought it would be it's like
really really hard and rubbery
I don't know if I'm supposed to um mold it
first like warm it up a little bit and then
stick to it I think that would be probably better because then I can mold
it better god I have no idea what I'm doing okay
so I spent some time molding it and now it's a lot more
pliable I think that's the word if you can see that
okay I guess I'm just gonna stick it on thing is my hands are already aching
and I've got to do this so much
okay I think we can call this a failure honestly I think it has potential and I
I feel like I could make this work if the clay wasn't dry already like it's
so firm I can't even mold it anymore
and also I've run out of clay so I know this is not
the shape of a normal human head but I I was planning on doing the hair
with more clay but there is no more what do I do with it
now it's kind of scary I don't want this
sitting around the studio looking at me look at that
so for some reason as it's dried it's got these huge
cracks in it so if anyone knows why that's happening um please feel free to
let me know in the comments because I did
really enjoy this process and I would like to give it another go now that
I've got a better idea and I know how much clay actually takes to
make a head of this size I really underestimated that
so this is basically just my chance to say that if
anyone knows what they're doing or has experience with
like clay or air dry clay please let me know because I'd love to learn
more about how you're actually supposed to do it or if I did anything
majorly wrong or was along the right sort of lines
so thank you for watching and there might well be a part two
because now that I know that I enjoy the process
I might enjoy putting in a bit more research and effort
to try and create something that's not gonna
haunt me thanks for watching bye also I just want to say I've started
work on the biggest oil painting I've ever done
this is the corner of it here um so hopefully the next video will be the
creation of this piece um if it all goes well but I'm
really excited about it so stay tuned
