Match play at the 2025 U.S. Amateur Championship teed off Wednesday at The Olympic Club with the Round of 64. Watch some of the top highlights.
NBC Sports and the United States Golf Association proudly present the 125th United States Amateur
Championship with uninterrupted coverage brought to you in partnership with Rolex.
One of the more iconic venues in the entire world. If you're a tourist, the Golden Gate Bridge,
tens of millions cross that bridge each and every year. Come about 11 miles south and
you'll find another iconic venue, the Olympic Club, hosting a USGA Championship for the 12th
time and for the fourth time, the most prestigious amateur title up for grabs right here on the late
course. Good look at golf swing. Can he control the spin? Stay right there. Easy ball. That's
yeah. Yeah, just 83 yards left. It's a good looking shot if it spins. Yeah, and this is
he can really spin it. He and that's one of the things that he's going to learn
as he goes on. He's really, really good, but boy, he spins the ball a lot
and you can never talk to a ball coming back off the green like that.
Head over to Coyven at 14. First to go and looking for his first birdie of the match.
John, I'll say that shows you how hard this golf course is that he's winning this match
and he hasn't made a birdie. At the creeping bentgrass greens. Our meetings say they're
rolling about 13. And he rolled that one right in. This should give Coyven a little bit idea of the
Yeah, he was watching it all the way.
Voices, but wow, they went two different directions there.
Could be good, good. Yep. So they'll go to 16. The par five tied with three to go.
202. I don't know if he can get this to the green.
Oh, look out low and left. He might still be away. That's one way to beat your opponent.
Hit him with your shot. Really close behind his right foot, actually.
Yeah, just scored a left on a run at it. Yeah, he did.
On the PGA Tour in this shot right here, normally pretty straightforward,
but got to be running a little hot. He's so good around the greens. Call voice for his bogey.
All right. All right. Yep. Six the hard way. Boy, this was smoked at the left side of the green.
He's begging for it to sit. Oh, he carried it all the way up there. That ball was smoked.
Chip shot then where voice is. Absolutely. Anything right's fine.
Oh, this is good looking right here.
That came out of this. I just dropped out of the sky.
Damn it. Oh, seven guys. Yeah, you did predict the win here, didn't you, Burko?
Oh, look at this. This has got so much speed. Settle now.
Oh, Nelly. I told you this. He's not going to lose his turn.
Whoa. Yeah, he kind of said it's a little early. Oh, he gave it to him. Wow. I mean,
I know he's a good putter, but nonetheless, Jackson Koivun moves on. That was a tough match for him.
Start to the center of the green now drawn just left of it.
Stay. Well, that's going to that's going to come back just a little bit.
Yeah, it just didn't quite get up on that slope. It's not too bad. Should go back.
How did that go in? Southern Cal golf used to kind of do that, but
miles here got a little bit left. OK, well, players make par 11.
Yeah, I like that play right there, Colt. Like you said, he's going to be keeping it down
anyway under that branch, so right around that front edge of the green.
Cannot miss this left. That would be a big mistake. Well, there's your big mistake. Yeah,
that's going to be pitching on a downside. Depends on the lie. It's not awful if it's a decent lie.
Boy, that's exactly what he's done. This is good looking shot.
Right underneath the hole. Yeah, you know your opponents in there
underneath the hole with a great birdie opportunity, so you have to take a chance here.
Oh, how about that? Are you kidding me?
Quick correction that was at the 12th, not 14, but the result still the same.
Unreal. What a shot by Miles Russell and he does.
Oh yes, three down, six to go. It starts going the wrong way quickly. Yeah, that's the beauty
of match play. It can answer big breaker from left to right, never had it high enough. We
that was an extremely short stroke. That is excellent. Yeah, pretty good there.
Seen a lot of players knock it by the hole for that side.
All right, Wolf Birdie to win the whole. Slowing up the hill, not much in it.
Oh gosh. I feel like the wind's been knocked out of him, but the last hole looks like he's
going to win it. Looks like he's got the advantage here. Now Russell's got a part to tie the hole.
Wow, how about that up and down? How about that stroke?
Putter's working. I think with this distance the ball will check and just kind of hold its position.
Don't think it'll have much backspin. That's a pitching wedge all over it.
Yep, well played shot. See him landed about six feet right of it.
Yep, just try to drop it right there. That needs to sit. Gotta go.
Oh my, horseshoe. Let's see if he can stay in balance on this one.
Boy, he's got it just left of it. It needed one kick. It kicked left into that bunker.
Watch for this ball to motor. If it hits on the green, it's going to land it perfectly.
This needs to hustle. Easy now. He gave it a go. Fortunate enough to win the northeast a couple
of times, so great golf course. Don't want to moist it, but over 70 feet here for miles.
Love the game. Have this opportunity on this big stage.
And he's missing putts and that wasn't even close there, Cole.
No, it wasn't. And he's reaching for some change, which I'm kind of surprised about.
Miles Russell has two putts from 7 feet to move on.
I think he's calculating. I think he was calculating. He was. He was adding up. He
was adding it up. Wait a minute, I'm putting for six is for five. He's got a three putt from
four feet. And you don't want the week to end, right? You sit there, you know,
maybe could he? Nah, probably not. Could I milk this as long as I can?
So the 16 year old Miles Russell from Jacksonville Beach, Florida.
Vita Meyer had a really difficult chip from well below the green surface up to this point.
Uphill putt for par. This is the time the whole speed. Wow, that is a huge win.
He is on. I mean, it feels like a win.
With an 8 iron in hand and ever growing confidence, wind helping from the right,
this has an aggressive line. Yeah, it does drawing towards the hole. Oh,
comes off the slope, did he? How about that? How did this come back?
Speaking, it's a lot better than it was. Yeah. Speaking of uncomfortable,
Grazerman now on the tee. He does not know how close his opponent shot is,
but playing this aggressive pull that eight a bit. Oh no. Not the easiest lie.
Wow, 5 up. Right out there about where that guy is standing just right of that
flagstick would be a great spot. I think that's the line he hit. A little deep.
30 paces to the front of the green. And it's going to come out hot. Yeah, so hard to judge
that there, K. Oh, he's seemingly in the driver's seat after that tee shot, but
going the wrong direction there. Uphill shot, but another terrible lie.
Two shots to win this whole. This very, very fast. Yeah, Grazerman played his 5th K to about
that same length in the neighborhood of 4 feet. Go to the green at 16. Vitamire looking for the win.
Pretty straight uphill putt. Boy, oh boy, yeah, it's changed.
One up, two to go and then blew it and then came back to win. But Vitamire now second shot one up.
Yeah, this is a big three with 250 uphill into the wind to the front.
Oh, carried it all the way up there. That was quite a statement. Yeah,
he won that match three and two at 214 to the front to 24 to the whole.
And this pushed right leaking right. Right's better than left, but Vitamire in there close.
Things are. Well, that just sat down so quickly.
Nope, up and out of it. He's hit a couple of good. Looks like he's about ready to concede the match
and there it is. What a change of events in the SPAC-9. Yep, Grazerman was five up through seven.
Yeah, I'll sit there just on the front part of the green in two. So pretty much a must make at
this point. And that's not it. Hat was off before the ball stopped. It really was never a good sign.
Yeah, good sign of any time. Christian will move on. He sure will. Three and one for birdie to
win the hole and the match one up. Slippery little putt right here. Catches that left edge and.
How about that finish? He will move on. And it just trickles into the summer campaign. Yeah, with all
big amateur tournaments running through the the Midwest there.
He did and he's part of that playoff this morning. How about that putt? That was unexpected.
Jim, we saw it last week. Ariana Lau, Ella Skagebrook. Going up the slope. He's too down to
bind, so he's got to make this one. Oh, that was all. He hated it. It hopped a little. Hats are off.
U.S. amateur champ John Cook. This was Davis Johnson out early. The 22-year-old
from Scottsdale, Arizona, closing out Colton Crawford. Bill Tomes in Idaho and trying to
take care of Bowen Moss, the 18-year-old from Utah. Just a grinder. And growing up, shall we say,
he was Nathan Smith. Davis moving on a four and three victory. So too is John Daly, the second,
a par at the last. Good enough for a one up victory over Cooper Claycomb. How about Billy
Davis, the twin brother of Anna Davis, former winner of the Augusta National Women's Amateur,
the 19-year-old rolling this one in for Birdie at 15. Boy, that one had some speed going. Catches
the back of the hole, but against Luke Colton, one of the best junior golfers who made it to
match play. Two putts from here to get down and move on to the round of 32. Yeah, easier said
than done running down that hill, but comfortably in for Mahanthan. He's on to the round of 32.
Beautiful shot in there. This is to win the hole. Matches tied. Tight match here. Yeah,
good match right here. Better putt. Yeah. Let's break it from right to left.
A little fist pump. To win the hole. To tie it up. Really good putt. Yeah, good match right here.
Two high quality players. And this is a brutal hole, John. Yeah, par four, 522 yards. We always
played it as a par five. Down the hill, you can run the ball down that slope. Kind of like this.
Just like that. All the way to the back. What a golf shot. How about that by Eric Lee?
Amazing second shot for Birdie to close out Yakubchik. How about that three? Yeah, that's
just all. I mean, that's just all world right there. That's a well-played match between two
of the best amateurs in the world. West Point, Mississippi, going to be a senior for the Rebels
in the fall. Three up against Frankie Harris and looking to close things out right here. Yeah,
big breaker from right to left. Just got to get the speed down and cozies it right on up there.
That should be enough. He's had success. Semi-finals of this championship in 2019.
A runner up to Nick Dunlap at the junior in 2021.
Brady Serraho has been in command with this match and he's going to go on to win two and one.
61st seed, Jimmy Abdo. Birdie to win the hole. Got it. Gets the fourth seed, Logan Riley. This
match is tied up. That's just a moment ago. Abdo for Birdie here at 17. A little slider down the
slope. It's one up in this match. Oh, I think he's pretty excited. Ah, it's a clutch putt.
Clutch putt right there. You got to find a way somehow to get up and down to make your four.
Yeah, got to get this one well out to the right. Make sure you get it hard enough. And that is
pretty well done. That'll be underneath the hole. No doubt about it. It's such a confidence boost.
Get your name out there. Abdo delivers. That's really maybe the first upset of the day that,
you know, that you can really look at. 21-year-old from Dallas, Texas. This for Birdie.
Three up against Penson Badgett, who also has a Birdie putt upcoming. And that Birdie putt
gets a whole lot more pressure packed. 18-year-old from Pilot Mountain, North Carolina. This for
Birdie to tie the hole against Preston Stout. Yeah, being three down, he needs it.
Yeah, good little battle right there. This for par. Stout's in there for Birdie. You can see
his coin to the right. And he misses. And that should do it. Yep, there it is. There's a
concession. And he wins. Stout wins four and three. Oklahoma State Cowboys, part of that
national championship team. 100 or so yards, maybe a little bit more. Went up over that tree.
It wasn't, it wasn't the worst of lies. So he was able to go at that hard and keep that clubface
pretty square. Okay, so he's got there. Watch this ball. Just keep trickling there. It'll trickle
for a bit. A little below his feet. He was part of that playoff this morning, the 63rd seed.
Trying to get it to cut. Yeah, just pulled it a little bit. Oh, that's a strong, long iron.
You have to control spin too. Looks like he got on top of that. Oh gosh, he could not hit it over
in that bunker. And then it plugged. That, that was shocking, you guys. Oh, it did. You just can't do
that. It's no easy feat to deal with. He's going to lay the clubface open, play it like a bunker shot.
Really good even tempo with that stroke. But you see how fast this green is. This is one of the
most severe greens on the golf course. It's so tilted back to front, left to right. Yeah,
lands as soft as possible. He is on the upslope. That was pretty good, but watch this go all the
way off. It's going to be interesting to see who's away now. That has pretty good acceleration.
Yeah, hopefully he doesn't get up against that rough.
That's for par. To win this hole. I guess, yeah, that, that was, that was kind of a gift,
but he'll take it. Yeah, it was a big time gift, but you know what? You take it and you go on.
It'll be tied headed to 18. Behind the green up on the hill. So that's a bigger target to look at.
Tell you what, Mason doesn't waste any time when he gets in there.
Oh, you can't do that. That is a huge mistake.
And he gets away. Yeah, it was dangerously close, but a well played shot now right at hole high.
Oh my. That was magnificent. He took a chance on leaving it and it paid off.
And he left it. Yeah, once it slows down, it starts breaking it. Pretty dead center.
Gets up there quick and knocks it right in the center. World class up and down
by Mason Howell. Yeah, now they'll go to number one. Keep it low under the tree there. No problem.
Let's see if it sits down and doesn't go through the fairway, which you know how tilted that second
fairway is from tee box. It tilts quite a bit from right to left from the balls well below his
feet. It's going to have to stay down in his posture. 186 yards to the front. That sounded
clean. Yeah, he can use that slope short of the shore of the green, but he didn't get it far
enough to the left. Kicked straight to the right, down into the right rough. So this one has a very
level lie. Did I go way long? Left of the flag.
That that was pretty much right on it and really good touch.
He's shown some great short game made even harder when you're 6 foot 9.
Got the ball way back in a stance, hooded lie. Now he's going to have to pitch that in or this
match is over. That should do it, yeah. So the 18 year old Mason Howell from Thomasville, Georgia
has taken down the 6th ranked amateur in the world, Tommy Morrison. Heck of a day, John.
What are your takeaways from what we saw here at Olympic Club? Yeah, a little bit of an upset right
there, but a lot of great matches. Jackson Koivun still still alive. So to the medalist Preston
Stout. Preston Stout, Ben James still alive in that just that killer section of that bracket.
But overall, golf course is what it is. It's very difficult. You cannot be out of position.
If you're out of position, you get back in position. Look forward to tomorrow. Yeah, there's that top
bracket, James and Koivun. It's shaping up to be a good one. How about the 16 year old Miles Russell
continuing to impress 16th in the world amateur golf ranking. He's got a Thursday morning match
against Billy Davis.
