The Perseids are one of the best-known and most spectacular meteor showers of the year.
They occur when the Earth passes through the debris left behind by the comet Sweet Tootle.
These tiny particles, some smaller than a grain of sand, enter the atmosphere at high speed.
As they disintegrate, they generate the bright flashes that we popularly call shooting stars.
Although they are named after the constellation Perseus, from which they appear to emerge,
they can appear anywhere in the night sky.
In 2025, the peak of the Perseids will be between August 12 and 13.
During these hours, up to 100 meteors per hour can be seen in dark, clear skies.
The best time to see them is between 2 and 5 a.m. on August 13, just before moonrise.
To get the most out of the experience, it's best to get away from city lights,
let your eyes adjust to the darkness, and observe the sky with a wide view.
In 2025, the moon will be in its waning crescent phase,
which could obscure the faintest meteor showers.
Even so, the Perseids will continue to offer one of the most
anticipated astronomical spectacles of the year, me.
