Local street food market in Nonthaburi, Thailand

We've been hearing a lot about this market up in Nontaburi and we just happen to be staying
right nearby. So today we're at the Owl Market. So we're a little bit early, things are just getting
set up. We wanted to get down here before the sun sets entirely so we can kind of see it in the
daylight and see it after dark. But it looks like there are a lot of food options here. Both sit
down dining and kind of your street stall variety of foods. There's a lot of shopping to be done
so we'll get into that a bit later too. It definitely has a much more local feel than
depending on what we like best. Look how they come out freshly boiled. They're a little bit
like juicier and as they dry out they come into this form. This is pork and basil. There's shrimp
and then there's mushrooms, two on each. Love it, sounds great.
That's great, all that for $32 you said? Yeah, and all the sauces they give us.
Oh this is going to be delicious. Create your own adventure.
Scenery is beautiful and the lighting's nice so this is what I'm most excited about. So you can
eat the whole shell. Some people just eat like the head butter inside and like suck it out
but they have like the tips of the shrimp cut off here for the most part. I would say that's
just the part you want to watch out for and then they do some seafood sauce with it. The seafood
sauce in Thailand is one of my favorite sauces ever and paired with seafood like you can't beat
it. Turn away if you're squeamish. Worth the trip already huh? The shrimp head is the best part of
the shrimp I would say because of the head but delicious and this is grilled to perfection.
The sauce is amazing too so you get that really shrimpy flavor but then you're getting that really
richness from the head butter. Oh it falls apart way better than I thought it would. Yeah. Sometimes
when you have you get a piece of like a shrimp shell it's like kind of hard to chew through.
This is really yummy it just kind of crisp and fall apart. And it's a kind of shrimp I feel like
it's like not a hard shell shrimp so it's easy to eat. Okay the challenge with this one is
what sauce do you choose? Okay this is like fire hot and then this is like a yeah like a creamy
like ranch mayo-y type of a sauce and this one's almost like an in-between. I kind of like this one.
Oops. Good thing we got lots of garlic. Yeah that's why they're generous with it.
They saw me coming and they said she's gonna drop some. Give her some extra garlic.
That's very good. Very meaty but also spongy and bouncy. It's really yummy. Yeah I'm gonna
have another bite because now this is the shrimpy part. Delicious. The garlic's so like crunchy.
But to me this is like a Pad Kra Pao dumpling. So unique.
Oh wow. Oh it's really good. It's like if a pork basil stir-fry had a baby with a dumpling
and that's what you get. Like from the texture to the flavor, the chili, the basil.
I've never had that type of combination before. You're probably gonna really like this one.
It's very much like the flavor of a sausage. Like a kind of a herb sausage. Got a really nice spice
to it. Then yeah it's still got that dumpling flavor of the dumpling skin on it and then that
crispy garlic. Just a shrimp chin break. It's so quiet and peaceful here. Like I have to look
around several times to be like no there's still lots of people around but they're just all eating
quietly. It's such a quiet serene culture and I love it. It just feels peaceful.
I almost did it again.
Gosh so treacherous. Oh these are warm when we got them. They're not as warm now.
Okay so that takoyaki. I love the crisp on the outside. It's a really good crisp.
Like the seaweed, like the mayo and all the sauces on top. Inside I didn't get too much of the squid
or octopus flavor. I'm sure there's some in there but the shell was really nice. I actually really
enjoyed it and for five baht each, steal. I would get it again for sure.
The texture is so different from your usual takoyaki. It reminds me if you've had any of
those sweet potato balls. The purple and the orange ones that they kind of make in every
night market. You know how when you bite into it it gets kind of squishy. It reminds me of that
but takoyaki version. That's really cool. I liked it a lot. For only three things we made quite a mess.
So many more places open now. It's almost 6 30 and it's much busier. Many more stalls open. So
yeah let's get collecting for round two. Have you ever seen this before? This is rice with
I think cheese and it's just grilled. Yeah it looks like it would have been for that price.
Gotta stay hydrated up in here. With no time limit. We wanted to eat these while they were
still hot. We got some grilled rice. Was it with cheese did you say? It looked like cheese. He was
spreading something on there with a brush. I've had fried rice but I've never had grilled rice.
Interesting. This is such a nice like grill on it, char on it. It almost tastes like puffed rice
but the inside's soft rice but the outside's like you know put a bite to it.
How interesting. I really can't put my finger on cheese. Not a lot of flavor to it
but like it's not bad at all. It's a really fun little snack. Even in a night market Linda has
found the bubble tea. My research has found we should get a drink there. Their signature is
Thai tea but also they have like some ancient coffees which you like. There's some signature
drinks there too. They also have a premium jasmine tea. I went pretty quick and picked this one as a
refreshing drink. Not now but maybe later. Get whatever drink you want and then if you like
yours I'll get another drink. Oh I see how this is. Okay. It looks nice. It looks fancy. No this looks great.
What they're steaming over there. That wasn't there the last time we were here.
It looks like snails but I was like okay let me just translate and find out. Shellfish right?
Right? I'm the seafood fanatic. An assortment of seafood for these prices. Snail. Snail.
A lot of snails in Vietnam and I'm a fan. I'm gonna go for a juicy one.
I love snails.
A little bit of chew to it but got a beautiful earthy seafood type of flavor to it. The snails
mixed with the Thai sauce. Dreams do come true. You could honestly put anything with that sauce
and it would be good. You could eat a shoe. Don't tempt us. One of the best things about being way
out from the tourist areas is space. This place has so much of it. There's a generous amount of
seating here and look at these cool restaurants. There's so much seating. This restaurant here is
I think made for kids. There's a lot of little kid meals here. Small pizzas. Baby-sized pad krapows.
More seating over here. Look at all this shopping and just again open air. There's this breeze
coming through here. I haven't sweat one drop since I've been here and I can't say that for
any visit I've ever had to Jod Fairs or any of those other night markets. This one definitely
has a very different feel here. There's a really great selection here of used name brand shoes.
Some really nice Nikes, Adidas and all kinds of sizes. Even big feet like mine and the best part
is the price. 180 baht for a pair of shoes. Name brand shoes. They're gently worn too like these
are in good shape. This is kind of incredible. The amount of shopping here is great. If you're into
like secondhand goods or vintage stuff, retro things and you've got a lot of patience, definitely
stop by here. I wish I had the patience to go through all this stuff. There's probably some
gems in here. Look at it all and not just that but the prices. Crazy. We saw some shirts for 10 baht.
I think on average it's about 50, 60, something like that but man it's just endless. Three for
100. Dresses 20 baht, 40 baht. All of these toys 100 baht each. The more we're walking through here
first of all it's so quiet and peaceful. It just sets this whole mood but as you look around it's
a lot of young families here. You can tell people who just live nearby have just come over here just
for something to do. There are toys for sale. There's like board games for sale. I saw a guitar
place back there. More clothes than I can imagine but honestly I would come back even just to kind
of people watch and just kind of enjoy the the vibes here. And by the way if you do want to make
your way up to this market, while we're not actually technically in Bangkok anymore, we've
crossed the border into Nantaburi. It is still very easy to get here. It will take a little while
depending on where you're at but there's an MRT station just five minutes walk from here so
without much difficulty you can come down here and enjoy this incredible market.
That is wild. I'm not exaggerating. Like unlimited shopping. Yeah. Like honestly I saw blinds for sale.
I saw an optometrist. I saw a garage sale. I saw chainsaws. You saw chainsaws? I saw chainsaws.
Okay so for North Americans, if you know of the like white freezies that you put in the freezer.
Tastes just like that right away. Then it follows through with a yakult flavor. So this is like
strangely like the perfect mix of you and I I guess. I was gonna say our childhood. Of like North
American childhood and Asian childhood. It's really fun. I like it. It's refreshing. Yeah. Awesome.
Okay we're getting further and further away from savory foods. There are these beautiful cakes or
there are these square ones here. More like a standard cake. So we got four of these
little cakes. I couldn't believe it. It's like that. We got little gnats here mostly looking
like. He's not here. I just mean I bought it and I'm gonna eat it. In his honor. In his honor. Or to bug him.
I have to say as good as the restaurant game is here and these savory foods look really good.
I might actually say that this market is one of the best for desserts. Not only did we just get
that really good deal on cakes. There was this one we just saw back here. It was three for 100. Yeah
35 each. But it smelled really good. It was like actual cakes and waffles and things with toppings
on them. Yeah and she was just making them on the spot. Like obviously not baking them on the spot.
But like putting it together. It just looks so so good. Friday night around 8 30. It's so different
from when we first came here. We were trying to find stalls open and things like that. Now it's
like everything's open. Yeah I don't usually do this at Thai night markets. I'm a little shy to
say. I'm getting a burger. But look at these. They look really good. And I haven't had a burger in
since we were in Canada last summer. Yeah almost a year ago. So now's the time. This place is highly
rated. They have actually quite a few options. There's pork, beef, chicken, fish and shrimp
burgers here. So I'm intrigued. I gotta do it. This would be a first for the bingo and binyu channel.
I think we never had a burger on camera ever. I don't think so. I don't think so.
Well not only for this channel but at a Thai night market as well. But that place was really
busy actually. They had tons and tons of orders. They had a whole system like a ticket system where
you go away and you come back. Okay this looks pretty dang good. Lots of cheese on there. It's
all beef so I'm very excited with that. Juicy. It's loaded. Whoa it is loaded. You didn't really
say what was on it. We just trusted it. Right. Tomato, lettuce, mayo, ketchup. That's really good.
The meat is good. The cheese is good. Solid burger. And you could upsize for 20 baht and get
fries right? Considering I'm getting American food where I should not be getting American food,
this is a solid burger. Okay awesome. We have come to the end of another night market. We'll
see you on the next one. Bye.
