Ma'am you need to stop if you want to look at the view.
Sarah and I are getting out on a fantastic South Lake Tahoe adventure.
I was gonna wait until it flattened out a little bit to do the talking but
it ain't gonna flatten out. We're doing 21 miles, 3,500 feet of climbing. Buckle up.
I'm a little scared.
We've got plenty of water. Got the water filter. Just ready to rock, sit and spin.
We're gonna get to a forest road in a second that's gonna parallel Cold Creek.
Hang a right on the Tahoe Rim Trail. Well actually hang a right onto Star Lake Trail.
Climb that up to the Tahoe Rim. Hang a right. Do some more climbing up above maybe 9,000 feet
and then a long descent down Armstrong and Corral.
Triangle ride. Yeah big triangle. Kind of the perfect triangle too. It's a little more steep
on this side. Oh yeah. So a little bit of pain for a lot of pleasure and I was pretty surprised
when I put together the mileage and the elevations. I was like we can do it. We can do it.
I can't call you for SOS rescue this time.
Sarah pushed the limits of her e-bike battery yesterday.
And my physical battery. Yeah what was the stats? 35 miles and 5,700 feet. That's how much the
Santa Cruz Heckler SL will climb you on dirt roads if you weigh 115 pounds.
In the highest mode too which was interesting. Yeah yeah she was out there exploring
all the stuff behind Everstoke, Penman Peak. You look at the map it looks like something and then
I started getting like messages coming through. She barely had reception.
Bring car. I was like okay let me hop in. I'll go find you. Because I sent all these other nice
messages and I was like oh no nothing's going through. And then I got to one LTE spot and I
was just like bring car. Like I know logically the message won't go through any faster. Yeah.
If it's shorter. Yeah it's just the urgency was received. Yeah. But you were in good spirits.
You weren't dead. I was really thinking you're going to be all tapped out and delirious. Yeah I
felt kind of embarrassed with myself because I would have been fine. Really the main concern was
not having water. Yes. But I mean all else considered I had tons of daylight left.
E-bike still perfectly works pedaling it. Could have pushed it. Yeah. And then the rest of the
route was downhill. You feel invincible with the e-bike and then you realize those are roads for
motorbikes. Yeah. Motorcycles. You were fully vincible. Exactly. I got vinced.
We're about five minutes in and we've spotted probably more than 10 e-bikes on the trail.
E-bikes not allowed out here but they're probably just riding the road. They're probably not riding
the trails. I'm the darn fool. Following the rules so the viewers don't get angry. No can't do it.
So hopefully you're hearing Sarah loud and clear. I got the DJI mic two mic three something like
that. So diving back into the multi-recording. It's always a pain. Already realized that I can't
hit the stop and start button for the GoPro and I was doing a normal conversation with Sarah.
I had to turn on voice commands and it stopped recording and it just did it to me again.
I'm going to have to spell out or I'm going to say halt instead of
S-T-O-P or change it to a different language. GoPro halting. Halten Sie.
It's like having a kid around. You can't say bad words. Yeah exactly.
You got that good pace going huh? Me? Yeah. Yeah I haven't had the delayed muscle onset
whatever that thing is after you do a big ride. Muscle soreness. And it hits you two days later.
That'll be tomorrow. Yeah. Two days after I did that big ride. Everyone thinks the e-bikes
aren't a workout but ask my loop. High stress score. Ask your generic wrist-based fitness tractor.
Always pretty amazing to be in a very busy town like South Lake Tahoe, hit the trail,
see a few people the first couple miles and then once you start getting out there
the sightings are few and far between and you got it all to yourself. Pretty amazing.
The hot hot days of summer are here and if you don't have your hydration dialed in you're setting
yourself up for a bad day with cramps or headaches or that general tiredness that we all hate.
That's why I've got the best electrolyte drink mix in the business in my water bottle before
during and after every day on the bike. It's Element the fine sponsor of today's video. The
Element thesis is out with sugar and in with salt. They believe that most people especially active
people that get out and sweat a lot need more salt in their diet not less to feel good and perform
their best. It took me so long to find that perfect drink to take with me for a big day on
the bike. I tried them all and finally Element checked all the boxes for me. It tastes fantastic
but it doesn't have sugar and it doesn't have a weird aftertaste. It keeps me fired up throughout
a ride but it doesn't have caffeine so I don't get jittery. It has the perfect mix of sodium,
potassium and magnesium and most importantly it doesn't ever mess with my stomach. The Element
mission is to restore health through hydration. If you've never given Element a try today is the day.
Use my link drinkelement.com slash bkxc. Put in an order for citrus salt. If that's your first try
I really think it's the best flavor to dip your toe in and then if you use my link whether it's
your first order or your 500th you're going to get a free eight-pack sample pack of the four
most popular Element flavors. Then you figure out what you want to dip your toe into next.
I really think you're going to like it but anything's possible and Element has a fantastic
refund policy. You get it, you try it, you don't like it, just send them an email they will refund
your money and then they don't even need you to send the product back but you should give it to
one of your friends because they might fall in love with it. Whether it's a hot day, a cold day
or any day in between if you don't have your hydration dialed in you're going to have a bad
day. So head on over to drinkelement.com slash bkxc. Get your hydration sorted out with Element.
Now we're on Star Lake Trail. Look at this, amazing. I have some really fond memories
doing some bike packing on this. Well, it's a little too early to complain about my legs hurting
but my legs hurt. Mine actually feel okay. I was a little concerned they were going to feel like
lead after yesterday's ride but probably tomorrow they will. Eyes forward just in case you run into
another bear. Oh yeah, they better be looking out for me. That one yesterday didn't even hear me.
I was like hello, hello. Ring ding ding. Actually I had to go like
that's what I did because I wanted to sound scary. The crazy throat clearing. Yeah, exactly.
Nice little snack break in the shade continuing on here.
Sarah didn't touch any of her unripened manzanita berries I picked for her.
They needed more salt. Now my legs started hurting after you said yours were hurting.
Contagious. Yeah, one day we'll have to do this as a out and back. Go up to Star Lake,
come back down this and then go down that Cold Creek Trail. It's worth riding for sure.
Starting to feel like more than a ride, more of an adventure. We've crossed the boundary. Yeah,
especially with how many more miles we have to go. Yeah, a lot of them are downhill. That was
my problem yesterday. I was just like ignorance is bliss. I'll just keep pedaling and I didn't
look at the map and then it got too hard. Yeah, all excuses from here on out will be blamed on
the elevation. Oh yeah. 8400 feet at the moment. Elevation. Yep. That rock was created from the
elevation. Uh oh. Elevation. Hold this mount. The hurtful part of the triangle. Oh yeah.
And then are we climbing down after the lake or back or up more? It's all up. I guess that
makes sense. Yeah. Climbing down. We're climbing down. Oh no. She's lost her marbles.
As the words came out I regretted them.
I was trying to say like are we going to be losing elevation but obviously the only way to lose it is
to descend. I don't even think there's a lake anymore. You've just been shining me on to get
me to keep pedaling. That's the only way to get her to go somewhere. Or tell me there's a bakery
at the top. A croissant? I already see the lake. What? Oh my gosh. We made it. We're not gonna die.
I wouldn't go that far. Oh my gosh. There's a little trail.
Oh wow. Oh that looks nice. Trying to find an opening. Yeah. Oh it's delineated. Interesting.
Oh my god. Brian. There's a bear. Oh little cinnamon. Oh he's got a little limp.
You saw it right? Yeah yeah. He's still there. I thought it was a person.
Going in. Yeah. Nice. Oh I love it. Didn't bring the binoculars.
Oh there's a. Oh there's a person. Maybe he transformed into a human. Yeah. Oh my god that's
crazy. He's got a whole campsite out there. Yeah. That's pretty good.
That was a delightful little destination. Got the feet wet. Cooled off quite a bit. It took us maybe
three hours and ten minutes to do this eight and a half miles. Almost three thousand feet of
climbing. So the bulk of the climbing is out of the way. Maybe 800, 900 more to go.
Let's do it. We're refreshed. Are we gonna climb down now?
The climb's gonna go down. It's an upside down downhill. I saw Sleaze Equilateral.
We saw a couple backpackers setting up camp so maybe uh
old Smokey was hanging out to nab a dinner plate. I think it's good to have a little doubt.
Like true adversity. Yeah. Is when you start doubting yourself and it's like oh man is this
we're gonna be able to do this and. Yeah. It hurts. Exactly. And you actually overcome that.
It's a huge mental win. Yeah. That's what I always loved about mountain biking is it
it made me realize how strong I can be. Like way stronger than I would have ever thought.
Whoa. Through the rapids.
Is this the trail? I don't know. Must be. Yeah you're on it.
Are you okay? Just hit a stopper rock. Yeah. Almost went over the bars. I could hear it by
your voice. Insert embarrassing sound effect. That's happened to me before.
Little desert feel out here. Anybody see Sarah?
Four and a half hours. 3,500 feet of climbing. I'm proud to say you have made it to the top.
We're not gonna climb a single another foot from here. There'll be no uphills.
Says yeah no one.
The hardest part is when you stop and then you have to restart again.
So hard to imagine doing the the full Punisher ride. Rows to toads. Start Mount Rose. Do all
Tahoe Rim Trail. Go through this and then keep going even further. 8,000 feet of climbing. 10,000
feet of climbing. Got to start super early in the morning. We'll do it tomorrow. Uh-oh uphill.
You said we were done climbing. She's losing her mind. You lied to me. She's going ballistic.
Oh square edges and buff trail. She's still looking at the view.
Ma'am you need to stop if you want to look at the view.
Distractions. Multitasker. Nice out there.
Skirt.
Yeah. Oh yeah. It's cool. Monster tree. Okay good. I was just about to tell you on trail
forks there's a a thing that says that there's like a like a tricky ditch type uh like a creek
crossing. Just a little bit to keep in the back of your mind. Okay thanks. I had to itch my face
so that was perfect. Yeah. Yeah. Oh. I think it's this. Smash that derailleur. Oh nice yeah.
Maybe. That wasn't that. Yeah I don't know. I don't think it would be that.
Getting swept away.
Refreshing. Splish splash. That would make more sense if that was the call out but there's a
bunch of them. I wasn't prepared for that. Oh yeah that's kind of jank if you're trying to climb it.
Nice little first payoff. Yeah really nice. And we're still a long way from home.
Nice. Thanks. Wow. It's amazing.
Whoa look at the left. Oh yeah. Whoa. Yeah. Don't look too much.
Whoa. Wow. Oh my gosh.
Flo natural. Yeah. Yeah you're right about the chipmunks being pretty big. Yeah you see them?
Even that one that was in front of me. Oh there's some hikers right there. Yeah.
Hello. Hi. Armstrong. Nice job. We're doing good. Survival
of the sickest. Oh yeah. Just says bike. Bike. Five miles to the bottom. Oh really? Yeah.
Five miles of downhill. Okay I swapped back to the regular microphone so it's just me talking now.
The microphone seemed to do pretty good. We'll see what the actual sound quality is.
There's a lot of buttons. Maybe there's some kind of software to actually turn off the buttons.
They did pretty good for five hours non-stop. We are five hours into the ride.
As you can see getting a little dark.
Look at her go. It's my girl.
Tight little trees. I got bark rattling around in my helmet.
Sunlight. Wow.
Oh I am running a little less psi than normal and I haven't heard any clankers.
Any rim dingers. I'd say normally I'm around 27 in the rear and now I'm going down to like 23,
22. And today was a pretty good test. Whoa so far. Holy moly. Almost went over the bars.
Shout out to TAMBA. Tahoe Area Mountain Bike Association.
Keeping these trails rad. Always building new stuff. It's becoming more and more familiar.
Yikes. She's ringing me out now. She won't slow down.
She got her fourth wind. Still going. Crazy. Slicing and dicing. Look at that.
Got sent sideways.
This is just like a mini Mr. Toads or a mirror image of it. Nice. Nasty. Just like Toads.
Yeah it's unreal. I'm kind of ridiculously surprised we haven't even got to a section
that I recognize yet. The turns have been amazing. Fantastic. Oh yeah. Opening up.
A little fire area. Maybe the Caldor fire. Okay. The bridge.
Didn't this get obliterated by snow one year?
Yeah now I'm starting to recognize. But different because all the trees are burned down.
But that bridge I remember and then there's kind of a road up here.
Five and a half hours in.
Spirits are high. Oh bikes are crashing. Wow. Even more beautiful.
Wow this is different without the trees. It's been a long time. Oh yeah.
Nice. Oh got distracted by the view. Sandy.
Wow nice job. Got through it without too much of a stutter. Yeah we're going here.
Slabidocious.
Yeah.
Took my buddy Josh down this trail when he was a beginner.
And now just blasting through all this you're like oh what the heck. It is a blue rated trail.
Man this is so crazy because whenever people say like oh it's 12 miles of downhill
you should be very very suspicious. But when you've climbed 4,000 feet or whatever it is
you do have the possibility if the trail is built the right way
for a massive downhill. Yikes. Yeah this is like the advanced route I think. There's
just a kind of a crazy rock slab type thing. I think so. Let's find out.
Send it Sarah. Strikes again. Oh nice nice save.
Yeah you should have watched my video from nine years ago.
Haven't you watched them all?
Hold on. Oh slippy. Oh man trying to get that perfect modulation.
Oh yeah almost. For her not me.
I got this one.
Whoa no breaking through that was amazing.
Yeah.
Some good sound effects. This goes on forever. So good.
The mileage and the climbing stats were pretty spot on I'd say. Maybe an extra mile or so.
But the big thing was the time. The time in the saddle. Six hours.
Quite something but I feel okay. I feel I feel decent. Thumbs up from Sarah. We did it.
Hope you go ride it someday. But if not I'll see you on the trail somewhere else.
