This is a special session from the archives with Jean-Philippe, one of the youngest players I’ve ever coached. In this lesson, we focused on the fundamentals: forehand, backhand, and serve. At just 5 years old, Jean-Philippe already showed great coordination and determination. I worked closely with him to adjust his body positioning, improve his movement, and help him take advantage of his dominant eye. It’s amazing to see how much potential can shine through at such a young age.
Let the racket drop and then you accelerate.
Drop, boom.
No, I've got it, I've got it.
Chanel, for you.
Do you know which one is your dominant eye? Right or left?
You don't know? Ok.
You want to know or you don't care?
You don't care but you're going to know because we need it.
So you know what we're going to do?
I'm going to show you.
You're going to do this with your head.
Exactly.
You're going to position it here.
Do you see this lady?
Inside the hole.
Do you see the lady?
Yeah?
Ok, so.
Keep your arms straight.
Do it like this.
Arms straight.
Straight, straight, straight.
Ok.
You see? Perfect.
Keep looking at her.
Is she in the middle?
Yeah?
Ok.
So, it's right.
Ok, it's fine.
Right eye.
Ok.
So.
What you are doing when you hit the backhand.
You are closing your legs a lot.
Like this.
Ok?
That's what you're doing at the moment.
Ok?
And as you're doing that, your head is turned completely here.
So, it's not easy to play there.
What I would like you to do is to keep your head always looking at the court.
Ok?
We do that?
Let's do some backhands like that.
Ready?
Very good.
Again.
Great job.
Again.
Wow.
Excellent.
Again.
Wonderful.
Wow.
Wonderful.
Again.
Wonderful.
Impressive.
Ok.
I'm going to give you some balls now.
You will have to run and hit a backhand.
When you hit your backhand, even if you run, make sure you see the court.
Ok?
Very nice.
Again.
Go.
Ok.
Very nice.
Again.
Ok.
Super again.
Yes.
Find a way to play.
Cross.
Hit on me.
I'm not that far.
I'm here.
Go.
On me.
Yes.
Very good.
Again.
Yes.
You can hit me.
Hit me with the ball.
Go.
Hit me.
Don't worry.
Don't worry for me.
Hit me.
Yes.
Great shot.
Again.
Hit me.
Yes.
Again.
I'm here.
Very good.
Keep hitting me.
I'm going to move.
So sometimes I'll be here.
Sometimes I'll be there.
You have to touch me.
Ready?
Again.
Ready?
You did.
Bravo.
Again.
Ready?
Again.
Ready?
Good shot.
Here.
Ready?
Here.
Bravo.
Super.
See the court and hit it.
Good job.
Again.
Good.
Again.
Good.
Bravo.
Good job.
Again.
Good job.
Super.
First thing you do,
for the backhand,
you turn your shoulders
and you run.
So you're never late.
Ready?
Turn.
Run.
Good.
Again.
Come back.
I'm here.
Yes.
I'm here.
Play on me.
Yes.
Good job.
Can you throw the ball
without the racket first?
Just to warm up.
Throw the ball.
No, no.
With your right.
No, no.
Throw the ball over the fence.
Over the...
Yeah.
Super.
Again.
Wow.
Good job.
Super.
Yes.
Again.
One more.
OK.
Very good.
You have a super serve.
We're going to improve
one little thing.
OK.
So I make the motion slowly.
So you start here
and once you arrive here,
what will give you
a lot of power
is if you let the racket drop
and then you accelerate.
OK?
And you're not...
You're accelerating from here
instead of letting
the racket drop completely
and then accelerate.
You drop and go.
OK.
Do it again.
Yes.
Again.
Good.
Yes.
OK.
Again.
Slowly, slowly.
Up.
OK.
Here.
Once you're here,
this comes front
and then you can accelerate.
So let's do it.
Again.
Up.
Your elbow comes front
and then you accelerate.
OK.
I show you a slow motion.
So.
You see?
I'll go here
so you see better.
Here.
Once I arrive here,
I let the racket drop.
Look.
It drops.
When it drops,
my elbow comes front.
Up.
You see?
Up.
OK?
Show me.
Oh!
Yes!
OK.
Let's do it.
Yes!
It's normal.
Very good.
Again.
Wow.
Super.
Again.
Oh yes.
Oh yes!
Again.
Drop.
Boom.
Oh!
Fantastic.
Again.
Yes.
Drop.
Accelerate.
Yes, sir!
We can stop on this one.
It was the best.
You just hit an ace.
Like Zverev.
Bravo.
You play great.
Fantastic.
