Welcome to Math with Mr. J.
In this video, I'm going to cover the
prime factorization of 120. So, we are
breaking 120 down into its prime
factors, the prime numbers that multiply
to equal 120. So, looking at 120, we
need to start breaking this down by
thinking of two factors, two numbers
that multiply to give us 120. Well, 3
and 40 are factors of 120. 3 * 40 = 120.
So, let's break 120 down into three
and 40. Now, keep in mind there are
other factors we could have started with
here. For example, 2 and 60. And there
are other options as well. These will
all work depending on the number. There
can be multiple different factors that
we can use. So there can be multiple
ways that we can do these but in the end
we will get to the same prime numbers
and that's what's important. Now let's
continue to break this down. We have
three and 40. Three is a prime number.
So we are done here. We can't break that
down any further. So let's circle three
to show that we have a prime number. Now
40 is a composite number. We can break
40 down further. So we need to think of
two factors here. Well 2 and 20 are
factors of 40. 2 * 20 = 40. So let's
break 40 down
into two
and 20. Now two is a prime number. So we
are done here. We can't break that down
any further. 20 on the other hand we can
break down. So we need to think of
factors. 2 and 10 are factors of 20. So
let's break 20 down
into two
and 10. Two is prime. So we are done
here. But we can break 10 down. So we
need factors of 10. Two and five are
factors of 10. So let's break 10 down
into two and five. Now both two and five
are prime numbers. So we are done here
and here and that's the prime
factorization of 120. We don't have
anything else that we can break down any
further. We have all prime numbers. So
let's write this out as
120 equals and then we can write out our
prime factors in order from least to
greatest. And we are multiplying them.
We start with the twos here. So we have
three twos. So 2 * 2 * 2. And then we
have 1 3. So time 3 and then 5. So time
5. If we have the correct prime numbers
here, they will multiply to equal our
original number. So let's check. 2 * 2
is 4 * 2 is 8 * 3 is 24 * 5 is 120. So
we are correct here. So there you have
it. There's the prime factorization of
120. I hope that helped. Thanks so much
for watching.
Until next time, peace.
