Bonjour à tous and welcome to Learn French with Vincent, this is unité 8, leçon.
And in this lesson we'll discover together les structures avec deux pronoms and the special
case in which one of them is lui and leur.
So in the previous videos we've been seeing the case when you've got one of them and it's
en, the other one was le, la, les.
So in that video we'll focus on lui and leur, and the next one will be y, so let's see now
with lui and leur.
So remember that the rule goes like that, le, so the pronoun le, la, and then les will
come first, then you will have lui and leur after.
So that's the rule, that's the way it will go.
So first you will put le, la, and les, so the first pronouns, and after that lui and
leur will come after these pronouns.
So let's see a few examples, and then I thought it might be useful to see the present tense,
just because you've got only one verb, then we'll have the passé composé tense because
you've got one verb but it's composed, and then we'll see the futur proche going too,
because you will have two verbs in that structure.
So let's see now le présent.
And so, one simple sentence here, Nicolas donne, so donne is to give, le café, the
coffee, à sa soeur, at his sister.
So we would like to replace all these elements with pronouns, so I've been doing a video
for all the use of the pronouns, so in that case we'll only focus on the place where you
should put them, the order.
And as we saw a few minutes ago, first you should have this le, and this pronoun will
replace le café, and then lui should come after, because lui will replace à sa soeur.
So you will get the sentence Nicolas le lui donne.
Keep in mind that these two pronouns should come before the verb, in that case we've got
only one verb, so you put them right here.
First le, then lui, and after that the verb.
Nicolas le lui donne.
So let's see another example now.
Laurent offre, offrir is to offer, les fleurs, the flowers, à ses amis, to his friends.
So let's replace the whole thing with pronouns.
Laurent, so as we saw previously, first le, then leur, and the verb.
Laurent les leur offre.
So let's see now another example.
Nous envoyons la lettre à mon frère.
So envoyer is to send, nous envoyons la lettre, the letter, à mon frère, to my brother.
We want to replace all these things with pronouns, so double pronouns here.
Nous, as we saw, first la, then lui, and after that, envoyons, your verb, nous la lui envoyons.
So the first one, Nicolas le lui donne, Laurent les leur offre, nous la lui envoyons.
Then we saw that we've been respecting the rule, first le, or la, or les, and then lui, or leur.
So let's see now how it will work if we've got passé composé form, so exactly the same
sentences, but then at the passé composé form, because it is a composed tense.
So the sentence will be changed, and it will go like that.
Nicolas a donné le café à sa soeur.
And so we will get Nicolas le lui a donné.
So technically, as you can see, it doesn't change at all.
Remember that in that case here, you get à donner, so you get two parts, but then it's
only one verb, so your pronouns should come before the verb, so right here, le, and then
lui a donné.
Laurent a offert les fleurs à ses amis.
And it will go like Laurent les leur a offertes.
Alright, you've got your verb here, you've got the pronouns, les, and then leur, to respect
the order that we saw, and then the verb.
Nous avons envoyé la lettre à mon frère.
Nous la lui avons envoyée.
Exactly the same thing, only one verb here, you get two forms, but one verb, so you should
put la and lui before your verb.
So you will get Nicolas le lui a donné, then Laurent les leur a offertes, and then nous
la lui avons envoyée.
Alright, so not that difficult at all.
Let's see now, if we use the future past, so this structure, I am going to, and then
you put the verb at the infinitive, because in that case, you will get two verbs, and
so it could be quite interesting.
Let's see now, Nicolas va donner le café à sa soeur.
So, exactly the same sentence, but in that case, if you look carefully, you've got first
va, so aller is to go, and then you get your verb at the infinitive form, because it's
the second verb.
So in that case, you've got a structure with two verbs.
And the rule in French is that if you want to use pronouns in a structure in which you
will have two verbs, you should put these pronouns before the second verb.
And in that case, the second verb is donner.
Aller here, va, is the first one.
So that's the reason why we will put them right here, and not before aller here.
Nicolas va le lui donner.
We respect exactly the order that we saw previously, first le, then lui, and then the verb.
Laurent va offrir les fleurs à ses amis.
Exactly the same concept.
We first put the first verb here, then we put the pronouns, les, and then leur, and
then the verb offrir.
Laurent va aller leur offrir.
Nous allons envoyer la lettre à mon frère.
Exactly the same rule.
First the verb, first verb here, then the pronoun, la, and then lui, and after that
your second verb.
Nous allons la lui envoyer.
Alright?
So remember, if you've got two verbs, they should come before the second verb, like here,
and here.
And we keep the order that we saw previously.
So, le, la, or les, first, then lui, or leur, in the second place.
Okay?
That's it.
I hope it was clear.
