and rose to power during the Tang Dynasty. She was the only woman to have ever ruled China
as an emperor. Wu entered the imperial courts at the age of 14 as a concubine to Emperor Taizong.
After Taizong's death, Wu became a concubine to his son, Emperor Gaozong. However, Wu was not
content with merely being a concubine and she was determined to rise to power. Wu was intelligent
and politically savvy and she quickly became a trusted advisor to Emperor Gaozong. She also
had a network of supporters who helped her gain more power within the courts. In 660 AD, Emperor
Gaozong became seriously ill and Wu stepped in to help govern the country. She proved to be a
capable leader and when Emperor Gaozong died, Wu seized the opportunity to take the throne for
herself. Wu ruled as an emperor rather than an empress and she proved to be a strong and effective
leader. She promoted education, reformed the legal system and implemented a number of social welfare
programs. Perhaps Wu's most famous achievement was the construction of the Giant Wild Goose
Pagoda in Xi'an. The pagoda was built to house Buddhist sutras that had been brought to China
from India and it became a symbol of the Tang Dynasty's commitment to Buddhism. However, Wu's
reign was not without controversy. She was accused of murdering her own daughter and of having her
political opponents executed. Nevertheless, she remains a figure of great historical significance
and is remembered as one of China's most powerful and influential leaders.
Empress Wu Zetian's legacy has inspired countless generations of women leaders in China and beyond
and she continues to be celebrated as a symbol of female empowerment and leadership
