they will turn up automatically in your feed. As you see, lots and lots of really good plants,
including some lovely flowering shrubs, gorgeous perennials that grow in sunny locations,
climbers, ornamental grasses, and some gorgeous roses too, but here in front of me, I wanted to
take a moment or two and tell you about this wonderful variety of Foamy Bells. This is Eucarylla
Sweet Tea, a variety that really is a magnificent performer. Raised at Terra Nova Nurseries by Janet
Egger when she was there, this is a cross between the Alum Root, Heuchera Velosa, and that's where
the bigger and these big bold leaves come from, and then the little Tirellas, the foam flowers
that grow all through the woods in this region, that's where these dainty little white flowers
come from. Combining the best of both of those genera, and also throwing in some gorgeous colored
leaves too, you can see what a useful plant this is. What's neat about it is that it's very hardy,
it's a Zone 4 plant, so it will grow anywhere in our region. And in springtime, when the young
growth emerges first, it comes out with this very eye-catching kind of bright reddish-orange color,
then as the leaves develop, they start to take on kind of cinnamon tones, then as it goes through
the season, the leaves actually darken going into the summertime, and then going into the fall, they
brighten up again with a nice bit of fall color. And in milder areas in our region, this will
actually stay evergreen through the wintertime too. So tough and vigorous and hardy, it will grow
in sunny locations or in partially shaded locations. But one of the uses that I would suggest
you think about using this, is in a woodland style garden or anywhere that's shady. You'll find this
will make a really nice big bold mound with these maple-like leaves that are so showy, and these
dainty little white flowers that stick up above them. It's a really nice little plant that grows about 20 inches
or so high, and spreads out to about two and a half foot or so wide. Really a perfect size if you're just
going to grow one plant in say a bed or a border, or a cottage style garden for that matter. But one of the
uses that I would suggest you think about using this plant is, as a kind of ground cover, an understory
plant. It might be that you've got taller trees or shrubs or something where you could do with
something that will spread out over the ground and make these colorful clumps, in which case
this would be a perfect plant for you to consider using there. You could use it alongside paths and
driveways too, and of course if you have the space, you could mass them together and then you get the
combined effect of all of these nice mounds. So all in all, a hardy, reliable, very easy to grow
plant that likes to grow in well-drained, and this is important, that you put it in well-drained soil
that's got liberally mixed in plenty of humus organic matter. They love to have that kind of
loose, fluffy matter in the soil, and then be able to draw on that when things get a little bit
drier and hotter during the summer months. Of course, putting down a layer of mulch will help
to retain moisture too, and when you plant them first, make sure, and this is important, make sure
that you water them well until they get established. Thereafter, they need very little maintenance,
but one little tip that I'll give you, if you're going to grow this, or for that matter, any of
these type plants, you'll see that these buds are just coming out now, you'll see that this flower
is out now in all it's glory with it's dainty little white flowers on there. But if you look
over here, you'll see that there's also some spent flowers on it too. Now you can go through, there's
no reason, you don't have to do this if you want, but you can go through with a pair of snips,
and you can just cut out these old flowering stems like this, and that tidies it up. But one of the
things I would show you is that if you grasp hold of these old stems like this, and give them a sharp
tug, you'll find that it comes out easily from the crown, and so that you're able to keep it looking
nice and fresh, and of course then will encourage new flower buds to come on it all the way through,
or at least all the part of the earlier part of the summer. So hardy, reliable, excellent
ground cover, and gorgeous colored foliage too, this is Eucarella Sweet Tea, a very nice variety
of a bi-generic hybrid.
