Once upon a time, while the people of Israel were still at Rephidim during their 40-year
journey to the Promised Land, a group of warriors called the Amalekites, warriors of Amalek,
ambushed and attacked them. Seeing this, Moses selected an able-bodied young man from among
the Israelites as his henchman. This young man's name was Joshua. And Moses said to Joshua,
choose some of our men and go out and fight the Amalekites. I will stand on top of the hill with
the staff of God in my hands, that the Lord may bring us victory over our foes. Thus Joshua did
as Moses had instructed him and fought against the Amalekites, while Moses, Aaron and another
man named Hur went up to the top of the hill. And there it was. For whenever Moses raised up
his hand, Israel prevailed. And whenever he lowered his hand, the warriors of Amalek prevailed.
Moses held up his hand for as long as he could, but his arms soon grew tired. And so Aaron and
Hur took a stone and put it under him for him to sit on, while they held his hands up, Aaron on
one side and Hur on the other, so that his hands remained steady until sunset. Thus by the power
of the Lord, and as the arms of Moses remained stretched up toward heaven, Joshua and his men
conquered the army of Amalek with the sword. After the victory, the Lord instructed Moses,
What has happened today, write it down on a scroll as a permanent reminder and read it aloud to
Joshua, for I will erase the memory of Amalek from under heaven. And Moses did as the Lord had commanded,
for he wrote that because their hands were lifted up against the throne of the Lord,
the Lord will be at war against the Amalekites from generation to generation.
And afterward, Moses built an altar there and named it Yahweh Nissi, which means the Lord is my banner.
