Wow, I can't even look at the scenery. That is amazing.
I am finally getting out to go ride the Mount Lola Trail. Outside of Truckee, less than an
hour from Everstoke, heading south. It's about 15 minutes off the main road, but it feels like,
this feels like a world away. I'll be doing this as an out and back. Six miles up, six miles down,
2,600 feet up and down. And boy, oh boy, we have Hero Dirt. It has been raining out here.
So nice. Some years it doesn't rain until December when we had those crazy wildfires,
but this has actually been like a good dumping of rain to refresh, bring the Hero Dirt back.
Feels like Canada. My buddy, Scott Nickel, aka Chuck Ibis, the founder of Ibis Bicycles,
told me about this trail years and years ago, and it took me so long to finally get on it.
Huffing and puffing, going to get over 9,000 feet.
There is a forest road that you can climb up maybe a third of the way or half of the way.
I'll just do the trail and suffer for it probably. Oh no, this is massive.
Nope. Just trying to prove it to myself. My favorite thing about Scott, whenever we would
talk, we would talk trails and that's just the best. I can talk tech and bike stuff for
five or 10 minutes and then I'm kind of bored. I appreciate bike tech. I think it's amazing,
but I could talk for hours and hours on end about trails.
Mount Lola is named after Lola Montez. She was a controversial dancer around the 1850s,
gold rush times. She was Irish, but she kind of reinvented herself, pretended to be Spanish.
I was talking to ChatGPT, trying to get some info, and then I lost service. So I don't know
if she was actually in this area during the gold rush, but apparently she was a world traveler,
Europe, Australia, dancing all around. If it happened today, maybe it'd be Mount Miley Cyrus.
Remote. Yeah, the road getting in was pretty rough. Sarah's car could handle it pretty good,
but it'd be great to have my truck. So the saga continues two weeks in truck. Maybe finally we'll
get looked at today at some point after having to beg the service advisor to test it. He said he
tested it. He said it was fine. And then I go to pick up the truck and he was like, okay, let's do
it together. Plug it in. I get the red ring of death. That's exactly what I got trying to charge
the truck previously, two weeks ago. That's why it got towed to the dealership. Never had a tech
look at it. I get it. Today as a service advisor for Ford, you're probably spending a ton of time
talking to people who are doing complete user error, charging their, their cars,
using the wrong adapters. But eventually you have to believe the customer. It's the first time the
dealership didn't want to take advantage of me and charge me something. He was trying to like,
no, I don't want to, I don't want to cost you money. I'm trying to save you. Please look at the truck.
Please fix it. So I was very happy that the red ring of death came up with him standing there
and I did my best not to totally lose it. Sarah probably lost her cool more than I did, which
is funny. That's so rare. I'm usually the one losing it and being all
animated, but she, she, she got, she had enough, but yeah, I'm sure they'll get it fixed here
tomorrow. It won't cost me a dollar and I'll never have another problem with the truck again.
Oh wait, I forgot. My name's Brian Kennedy and I am cursed when it comes to vehicles,
but I'm the luckiest man alive when it comes to go finding cool trails to ride.
Amazing. Going to be a huffer and puffer all day.
I have been enjoying my knee pad free life so far. It's great until it ain't. We all know that.
I rode Buzzard's Roost ridge with Sarah yesterday and had a crash. Knees were fine.
Did fine. I had my gloves on, took the brunt and I was a-okay. Rode it on the e-bike.
Pretty nice loop. It's, it's over so fast, but it was so much more beautiful than I remember at the
top. Always crazier, way steeper than anything else in this area.
It's got to be one of the steepest legal trails around. And then what's so nice,
I hop back on my Ripmo and it just feels incredible. It's just so nice. No squeaks,
no creaks. Light as a feather. Oh, this bike just always feels like a million bucks.
Almost hit the puke point. Whoops. Take it a little easier.
It has been a while since I've pushed this hard on a ride, but I am not worried because I had
a full bottle of the best electrolyte drink mix in the business before I even started this ride.
It's Element, the fine sponsor of today's video. The best part about Element for me is the
magnesium, sodium, and potassium that knocks out headaches and cramps before they even start.
The best part about Element for you is that they have a fantastic, no questions asked,
refund policy. If you have never tried Element, today is the day. Use my link, put an order in,
and if you don't like it, all you have to do is send them an email and then give the Element to
one of your friends because maybe they will fall in love with it. You are taking zero risk with
your first taste of Element, and if you use my link when you're putting in your first order or
your 500th order, you're going to get a free eight-pack sample pack of four of Element's
best-selling flavors so you can keep adding to your salty stack or you can share them with a
friend. And if you're already an Element enjoyer and you want to take your salty experience up to
the next level, you have to try the sparkling Electrolyte Waters. Game changer. The Element
thesis is out with sugar and in with salt. They believe that most people, especially active people
that get out and sweat a lot, need more salt in their diet, not less, to feel good and perform
their best. It took me many years and many different products to find a drink that I could
take with me on a long mountain bike ride that checked all the boxes for me personally. Element
is finally the one. It tastes fantastic. It doesn't have any sugar. It doesn't have a weird aftertaste.
It doesn't mess with my stomach. And most importantly, it keeps me fired up throughout a
whole ride, but it doesn't have caffeine so I don't get jittery. The Element mission is to restore
health through hydration, whether it's a hot day, cold day, long day, or a short day. If your
hydration is not dialed in, you are not going to feel good. So use my link, D-R-I-N-K, element.com
slash B-K-X-C. Get an order of Element in. Start your journey today. Oh, okay. So this is the dirt
road on the left that I could have cut up, cut out a little bit of the single track.
Oh, I thought I lost my plastic wedding ring. I felt it like fall off, but it must have been
something else. Got to wear two just in case, especially with all these hiker ladies out here,
you know. I'm taking. This is really cool. Very backcountry.
I dig an out and back too. You kind of get eyes on everything.
See what's going to get you. If you're not feeling it, turn around, go back down.
But if the downhill is good, it means you're going to be suffering on the climb. Yeah.
Get the CO2 out.
Can't get around it. I bet this would be a pretty good hiding spot if you wanted to
catch some wildlife on camera, figure out where to be downwind.
They're probably crossing that log right there.
Oh yeah. Okay. Some merciful flat spots.
I did see on Trailforks that a couple people have ridden this
all the way to the top within the past week or so. That's the biggest thing about
playing Trailforks darts, finding an amazing trail that looks great on paper.
And then, okay, no one's ridden it. What could the actual state of the trail be like?
And look at this. This is like 10 out of 10 amazing, perfect trail, except for there hasn't
been a chainsaw on it for like five years. And all those big trees back there are in the trail.
So it's always a gamble, but I seem to win those gambles quite often.
Come on, let's see some wildlife. Wildflowers are pretty dang good though. Good consolation.
One of the animals that has not shown up on the Everstoke game cameras yet is the red fox.
I guess they're pretty elusive. Definitely seen the gray fox and, you know, mountain lions,
coyotes, bears, all the good stuff. But for not one sighting of a red fox, kind of crazy.
Not enough bunny rabbits. See the bobcats quite a bit. Red fox stays near the chicken coops.
Just me. Have a good one. Okay, cool. Hello. Move. Wild. Hello, wild dog.
Hello. Nice. They're just out here roaming. Good on them. Super well behaved.
It's all you want out of your dog. It's just how far are you willing to go to get it?
This must get pretty busy on the weekends if this is a nice early Monday morning.
Scared me. You coming with me? No, it's okay.
The huskies snuck up on me.
They're coming with. Wow, that was an amazing moment. Those two huskies joined me for about
10 seconds and all of a sudden, like, all was right with the world.
It's like the first time in 25 years that I wanted a dog. The perfect companion,
co-pilot, sensing danger, will go to war with you. Just about into August and still a giant
snowfield up there. Man, rides like this, I'm so grateful. I got off the computer and got outside.
My brother was a huge part of that. My uncle Dennis.
I was just a gamer. Computer games, video games. Not very good of a programmer
for all the time I spent on the computer. I should have been way better.
Should have bought some books on programming first off and got into it.
That's in the past. That's in the past. Okay, decent view out that way, but
I promise tremendous view in a little bit. I was trying to be nice and stay on the trail.
Oh, a lot of good that does.
May not seem like it, but this is the dream for me, man.
You know just enough about the trail to get out there, have someone you respect say it's good,
and then just pure adventure where every turn is something new up and down.
And the fact that I've been doing YouTube videos for nine years. I've been riding for like 13 years
trying to find all these places, and there's still places in Northern California
I haven't seen. I haven't done. It's beyond amazing. A lifetime of rides here. I definitely
have not been drinking enough. It's been so cool, but I'm still sweating like crazy.
Gotta stay on top of it. Oh yeah, perfectly rideable. Here we go.
Ah, summit is 9,100 feet, so not quite over 9,000 yet, but pretty close.
Beautiful day for a Sufferfest.
I guess I could try to ride. It's been a while.
9,143. Pretty amazing. Took me an hour and 45 minutes. Pretty good. Okay,
let the adventure continue. I was gonna say begin, but it has already been a fantastic
adventure on the way up. Wow, I can't even look at the scenery. That is amazing.
Didn't seem that rocky on climb, on the climb. Still working with the lower tire pressure.
I'm loving it. Stupid idea or good idea? Oh god. Stupid.
Off camera. Just trying to respect the trail. Michael Jackson want to be starting something.
Stuck in my head the whole day. Mama say, mama saw, mama saw.
Oh yeah. Oh, light and dark. I could not see where I was going there.
Pretty astounded that the trail can be in such amazing shape when it doesn't seem like
there's a lot of trail work going on.
These trails that spend months and months under snow just preserve themselves and they're just
built really, really well. Oh, missed my turn. They're built really well. Shed the water properly.
Man, you just make that big one-time investment to build the trail and
always have to fix a couple things years later, but man, it just becomes something that
so many people can get enjoyment out of.
Man, I do not remember it being that rocky and steep, but I'm sure I was pushing it up
five minutes ago. Got a memory like a goldfish. Okay, maybe some of the flat stuff now.
It's going too quick. Wait a second. That tree was cut out pretty recently. Maybe the motorcyclists
that probably aren't allowed to be on this trail, but use it and do trail work as well.
Oh, hello. Just me. Have a good one. Oh yeah. Sliding.
Oh yeah. Hero dirt's feeling good. Real good. Oh yeah. Tree down. I was staring at it, but I still
didn't see it. Man, what I should have done after that rain was go to North Star.
I'm always so afraid of going there from the dust. I'm sure there's good stuff. I've just,
I've been a couple of times and it's like not both sides of the mountain were open. Certain
trails were closed and it never calls me. These other trails call to me. Maybe it'll rain again
in November. Whoa. Oh, that was great. Perfect grade. Great sight line.
Whoa. Looks a little different coming at it than going the other way. It was like
punji sticks. Okay. Still a few more sections to go.
Oh yeah. Thought I had it.
Got to keep it modulated.
All right. That was hard to tell what was about to happen.
Little overcast coming, huh? Take out the harsh lighting.
Peekaboo. Oh yeah.
Wow. Okay. What an adventure. Here's the stats. Oh, Ellie went back to the truck.
I would definitely recommend it if you're looking for an adventure.
That downhill is over fast, but that's the deal when it's steep.
Holy moly. I almost backed the car over the bike. I was all ready. I got changed. I was ready to go.
Thank goodness. I remembered. Okay. Now you want to hang out with me? Okay. Maybe we'll
run the air conditioning for a little bit then if you're hot. Thanks for watching you guys.
I'll see you on the trail.
