this video I'm going to cover what
ratios are how to write ratios and
really just give a basic overview of
ratios now a ratio Compares two or more
quantities or numbers and shows the
relationship between them as we go
through our examples that will make a
lot more sense and we will see exactly
what that means let's jump into number
one where we have what is the ratio of
bananas to pineapples so here we are
comparing fruit specifically bananas to
pineapples now when it comes to ratios
there are three ways we can write them
we can use a colon we can write them in
fractional form or we can use the word
to let's write this ratio in all three
of those ways we will start by using a
colon but before writing the ratio we
need to see how many bananas and how
many pineapples we have we will start
with bananas so we have one two three 4
so let's write a 4 to represent the
number of bananas then a colon
and now we need the number of pineapples
one two
three
so four to three four bananas two three
pineapples that four has to come first
when it comes to ratios order is very
important order matters we have bananas
two pineapples so our ratio needs to be
in that order we have to have four two
three next we will write that ratio in
fractional form so bananas two
pineapples four
two three
and then lastly we can use the word two
so four two
three
now when writing ratios you can always
look to simplify just like when we work
with fractions for number one this is
already in simplest form that's going to
be the case for all of the ratios in
this video I will cover simplifying
ratios in another video that link is
down in the description so this ratio
here four bananas two three pineapples
Compares and shows the relationship
between the number of bananas to the
number of pineapples let's move on to
number two where we have what is the
ratio of pineapples to bananas now this
looks similar to number one but remember
order matters so it is not the same we
have pineapples two bananas so
pineapples needs to come first we have
three pineapples so three pineapples
two four bananas next we'll write it in
fractional form three pineapples two
four bananas and then lastly we can use
the word two three pineapples two
for bananas so that ratio Compares and
shows the relationship between the
number of pineapples to the number of
bananas before I move on to number three
I do want to mention something about
numbers one and two these are part to
part ratios meaning we compared part of
the group to another part of the group
numbers three and four will be part two
whole ratios so let's move on to number
three here and see exactly what that
means for number three we have what is
the ratio of pineapples to the total
amount of fruit so pineapples we have
three that needs to come first
colon and then the total amount of fruit
well we have seven pieces of fruit in
total so that comes second part of the
group pineapples two the whole group of
fruit three to seven let's write that in
fractional form three
to seven and then using the word two
three two seven
for number three that ratio compares the
number of pineapples to the total amount
of fruit so we see that relationship
between the pineapples and the total
amount of fruit let's move on to number
four where we have what is the ratio of
bananas to the total amount of fruit
well we have four bananas so that needs
to come first
and then seven total pieces of fruit so
that comes second
fractional form four to seven four
bananas to seven total pieces of fruit
and then lastly use the word two four
two
seven so that ratio compares the number
of bananas to the total amount of fruit
we see that relationship between bananas
and the total amount of fruit so there
you have it there's a basic overview of
ratios remember ratios compare
quantities and show the relationship
between them we can use a colon to write
ratios we can write them in fractional
form or we can use the word to always
remember that order matters now numbers
one and two we had examples of part to
part ratios we compared part of the
group to another part of the group
numbers three and four we had part two
whole ratios we compared part of the
group to the whole group I hope that
helped
thanks so much for watching
until next time
peace
