in this video i'm going to cover how to
convert between kilograms and milligrams
so kilograms to milligrams and then
milligrams to kilograms now one thing to
keep in mind
one kilogram equals one million
milligrams we need this information in
order to convert
let's jump into number one where we have
seven kilograms
equals how many milligrams so each
kilogram is a million milligrams so we
have 1 million milligrams 1 million
milligrams 1 million milligrams
7 times in other words seven times one
million which is seven million so seven
kilograms equals
seven million
milligrams
so when we go from kilograms to
milligrams we multiply
by one million
let's move on to number two where we
have 32 and 6 10 or 32.6
kilograms equals how many milligrams so
kilograms to milligrams we need to
multiply by 1 million now this number
isn't as easy to work with as the seven
kilograms and number one we were able to
use mental math for number one for
number two
again we need to multiply by one million
when we multiply something by one
million we can actually make this really
simple
all we need to do is move the decimal
six times to the right when we multiply
something by one million each digit of
that number shifts
six places to the left the value of the
number increases by one million in other
words we multiplied by one million so
technically the digits shift and
increase in value but let's make this
simple and move the decimal in order to
push all of our digits to the correct
place so to speak so again when we
multiply by one million we can move the
decimal six times to the right
so let's do
32 and six tenths
and we'll move that decimal once
twice
three times four times five times and
six times
fill these gaps with zeros
and that is our answer so we have
32 million six hundred thousand so 32
million
600
000.
so
32.6 kilograms equals 32 million 600 000
milligrams let's actually move back up
to number one and see if moving the
decimal six times to the right will give
us the same answer so we have seven
and the decimal comes after a whole
number so let's move it once twice three
times four
five and
six
fill with zeros here
and that's going to give us
seven million that way as well so
kilograms to milligrams multiply by 1
million and we can make that simple by
moving the decimal six times to the
right
let's move on to number three where we
have 2 million milligrams equals how
many kilograms well each group of 1
million milligrams equals a kilogram so
we need to see how many groups of 1
million are in 2 million or in other
words 2 million divided by a million
well that's going to give us 2.
so 2 million milligrams equals 2
kilograms when we go from milligrams to
kilograms
we divide by one million
let's move on to number four where we
have 42 million
eight hundred eighty thousand milligrams
equals how many kilograms so divide by
one million
now number three that was an easier
number to work with we were able to use
mental math for this one what we can do
we can move the decimal
six times to the left when we divide by
one million we push each digit to the
right six places
this gives us one one millionth of the
value of our original number meaning we
divided by a million
so we can do this by again just moving
the decimal six times to the left so we
have 42 million
880
000
and the decimal goes at the end of a
whole number so let's move it six times
to the left once twice
three times four times five times and
six times so it's going to go
in between the two and the eight there
so we get 42
and 88 hundredths or 42.88
now i left these four zeros
off of the end of that decimal because
zeros to the right of a decimal do not
change the value so typically we leave
them off because they are not needed
now if you were to leave those zeros on
that's an equivalent decimal so it still
would be correct but again typically we
leave them off because they do not
change the value so 42 million
880 000 milligrams equals 42.88
kilograms
so there you have it there's how you
convert between kilograms and milligrams
when we go from kilograms to milligrams
multiply by one million and we can do
that by moving the decimal six times to
the right when we go from milligrams to
kilograms we divide by one million and
we can do that by moving the decimal six
times to the left
i hope that helped
thanks so much for watching
until next time
peace
you
