It's like you're always stuck in second gear
When it hasn't been your day
Or even your year
I'll be there for you
When the rain starts to pour
Hi, I'm Brad.
I'm John.
Yeah.
We're going to do some Mission Souls.
It's basically kind of become Mission Souls Monday.
We're obviously still a few songs back
because they keep releasing them.
Oh, hey.
Terrible.
This time I'm going to go left to right
as we're looking at it.
It might as well vary as to
which side of the screen it's on.
I can't think.
But for us, so we've got
Dad, Sican,
the mum, Sheena,
whose birthday was actually
not too long ago.
I did see that.
Yeah, they had a post about her birthday.
I think it was actually just after this song came out.
Nacy, 16, keyboards in the back.
Stacey, 13, vocals and guitar.
I have some drums and Nisha, 15,
on the far side, lead guitar.
The song they're doing is
I'll Be There For You.
It was written, weirdly enough,
I think it was by the producers of the show, actually,
as the main theme song for the NBC sitcom Friends,
which ran from 1994 until 2004.
About two years too long.
Shaller and Monica do not belong together.
Anyway.
Let the hate begin.
So the American rock band REM
was originally asked to allow their song
Shiny Happy People
to be used for the theme song Friends.
They said no.
I could see.
Yeah, but you know, it would have worked.
Oh, it would have worked,
but then you're always going to be associated with it.
Yeah.
Because it was already a song,
and then it's going to be associated with a sitcom.
Especially when you don't know if the sitcom's going to make it or not, either.
That's true.
On reflection, it did make it.
And it probably would have been for REM,
a fairly high-charting song, suddenly again.
Yeah, but I think REM had enough.
Yeah, probably.
So anyway, producers got together, wrote a song,
and I'll Be There For You was written,
and Warner Bros. Television selected the only available band
at Warner Bros. Records to record it.
God, that's probably a no-joke.
Literally, they were the only band available.
We need the song now,
and the Rembrandts were the only group available
to actually do it at that point in time.
So yeah, the Rembrandts basically got to do it.
And then the Rembrandts themselves actually extended the song
in 1995, May of 1995.
They extended the song, added a couple more verses,
and released it as a single,
because the song was shown,
and therefore the song was fairly popular.
So that's where the longer, shall we say, radio-edit version
of the song actually comes from.
It's a 30-second intro.
Yeah.
So basically the short version that you got on the TV show,
that was written by the producers and stuff,
and then basically the Rembrandts came along
and added a couple more verses to make the song long enough
to actually release as a single.
All right, so let's get our umbrellas ready,
hop into that fountain, and check out what we got.
Before we do, make sure you hit that like and subscribe.
Check out the description down below.
You're going to find all our links, information, and stuff
that we have down there.
Okay, I shall hit play.
Okay.
I'll be there for you
Since you're there for me too
Still in bed at ten
To work again at eight
You've burned your breakfast so far
Things are going great
Your mother warned you
There'd be days like these
Pauses from YouTube.
Yeah, you can definitely tell that I'm getting into it.
It is one of those kind of high-energy songs that...
Well, it's so nostalgia for the 90s, I mean...
Yeah.
I mean, growing up,
I was a teen at this point,
I can honestly say I barely watched Friends.
It's kind of one of those,
eh, if there's nothing else on, I might watch it,
kind of the shows for me.
Actually, as an adult, I'm more into it than I was
when I was younger.
You grew up in the UK.
Well, yes.
But, yeah.
Even back then, though,
I was still able to sing along with a theme song.
Because it was.
It was one of those ridiculously catchy theme songs
that just worked.
Well, yeah.
And, I mean, it was...
The show was just such a huge hit.
And just, you know, and there again,
I think probably a lot of it had to do with the music
because I think that was at the time that
the half-hour sitcoms stopped doing the intro.
Sitcoms always had intros, you know,
at the beginning of shows.
And I think it got to the point that they stopped,
excuse me,
stopped doing that and it just,
or it was like a real quick little thing.
And I think Friends is one of them that brought back that intro.
Yeah.
Yeah, because, I mean, for me growing up in that period,
I'd say the only one,
the other one that really sticks in my head sitcom-wise,
I guess there's two.
Who's the Boss?
Tends to stick in my head a bit.
And the, not that it had any words,
the saxophone intro on Roseanne.
I think it was about season three.
Roseanne had words.
Uh-uh.
Yeah, I think the only words on Roseanne
was for her laughing at the end.
But it was just the, you know.
Well, you didn't watch it, but Cheers, Frasier.
Yeah.
I would say Cheers is probably just as iconic as Friends ended up being.
Yeah.
Probably for most people.
Probably definitely in America.
Yeah, but I mean, that was,
Cheers would have been more in the 80s.
Yeah.
I never got into Cheers.
Still haven't, weirdly enough.
Frasier.
Yes.
Yeah, I mean, me growing up, I'd say it was probably those three.
Of course, Who's the Boss was also a British TV show for us,
just saying, anyway.
Now that we're around the line.
TV.
No one could ever know me.
No one could ever see me.
Seems you're the only one who knows what it's like to be me.
Someone to face the day with.
Make it through all the rest with.
Someone I'll always laugh with.
Even in my worst, the best review.
Yeah.
Pause for YouTube.
Yay.
Got a lot of YouTube.
Mm hmm.
Yeah, I guess getting back to the point I started to get to
and then sidetracked myself last time.
Yeah, it's,
you can definitely tell that they're having a lot of fun with this one
because it is such a high energy kind of bouncy song that it's like
you can't help but A, sort of sing along to it
and B, just obviously have fun performing it.
Right.
In a way, part of me now actually wants somebody to do, you know,
kind of like do like a dark version of the song.
Need to get disturbed to do that.
Oh, yeah.
Let's do a dark melancholy version of the song.
We're going to put it into a minor key,
do it a bit like a dirge, I don't know.
But yeah, it'd be kind of sort of a fun experiment to hear.
You know, it's got that iconic beginning that as soon as it starts playing,
you know automatically that it's Friends.
Yeah.
What song it is.
Yeah.
It's, like I was saying,
they managed to tick every single checkbox of
this is what you want for basically a theme song.
Right.
Which a lot of shows miss.
Hawaii Five-O is another good one.
For an instrumental only.
Which one?
Hawaii Five-O.
Oh.
For an instrumental only theme song.
As soon as it starts, you know exactly what it is.
Well, there again.
Another great cover buy-in.
I mean, they definitely can do their covers.
Yes.
Yeah.
As we've said before, not just about them.
Quite a few other people that we react to.
Tom is a good example of.
The fact that he's having so much fun doing the cover.
Right.
Means you end up having that much more fun watching it and enjoying it
because of the fun that he's having doing it in the first place.
Right.
It's the exact same thing with Mission Souls.
You can tell the amount of fun, the passion that they have going into
whatever cover they're doing, and it just comes through on the other
side because that's just the way that it is.
Yeah.
That's it.
Yep.
That's it.
Yeah.
Well, obviously we're going to continue hitting them up.
Because obviously we're a few weeks behind on them.
They've released more than what we've been able to react to.
Yes.
We might actually have to do a couple in a week here.
Yeah.
Maybe we'll do Mission Souls a week.
Yeah.
Because I think the next one will be Deep Purple, Smoke on the Water.
I think that'll be next.
I can't remember what's after that.
Anyway.
It's another great song.
Well, if you want to see that, make sure you hit that like and subscribe.
