in this video i'm going to cover how to
find the reciprocal of a whole number
now when we think of a reciprocal we
need to think flip and that when we
multiply a whole number or any number by
its reciprocal we get one let's jump
into our examples starting with number
one where we have four and we're going
to find the reciprocal so the first
thing that we need to do is to rewrite
this whole number in fractional form
all we need to do is put it over 1. so
we can put 4
over 1
to put it in fractional form now we can
flip this fraction to get the reciprocal
so if we flip it
this denominator is going to become the
numerator and the numerator is going to
become the denominator
so the reciprocal of 4
is 1
4 so this is our
reciprocal
now let's multiply our number by the
reciprocal to show that we get 1. so
let's take 4 in fractional form
and multiply it by 1 4
to show that multiplying a
number by its reciprocal equals 1.
so when we multiply fractions we
multiply straight across so numerators 4
times 1 is
4
and then denominators 1 times 4 is 4.
same numerator and denominator equals
one whole which is
one
so the reciprocal of four
is one fourth
let's move on to number two where we
have twelve so the first thing that we
need to do write that whole number in
fractional form
and we do that by putting the whole
number over
one
and then we flip that fraction so the
one is going to become our numerator
and the 12 is going to become our
denominator so the reciprocal of 12
is 1 12.
let's multiply
12 by 1 12 to show that we get one
so 12 in fractional form 12 over 1
times 1 12 the reciprocal
multiply straight across
numerators 12 times 1 is 12
denominators 1 times 12 is 12
same numerator same denominator well
that equals 1.
so that shows that the number
times its reciprocal equals 1. the
reciprocal of 12
1 12.
so there you have it there's how you
find the reciprocal of a whole number i
hope that helped
thanks so much for watching
until next time
