Welcome to Math with Mr. J.
In this video, I'm going to cover what is a reciprocal.
Now, when we think of reciprocals, we need to think flip.
And we also need to think that a number multiplied by its reciprocal equals 1.
Reciprocals are used throughout different areas of math.
For example, when dividing fractions or certain algebra problems.
So it's a good idea to be familiar with reciprocals.
Let's jump into our examples starting with number 1 where we have 3 fifths.
So let's find the reciprocal and we do this by flipping the fraction.
So the denominator, the 5, is going to become the numerator.
And the numerator, the 3, is going to become the denominator.
So we are flipping the fraction.
The reciprocal of 3 fifths is 5 thirds.
So that's our reciprocal.
Now let's multiply our fraction, 3 fifths, by the reciprocal, 5 thirds,
to show that we get 1 when we multiply by a reciprocal.
So let's multiply straight across.
The numerators, 3 times 5, 15.
The denominators, 5 times 3, is 15.
So we get 15 over 15, which we know is 1.
Whenever you have the same numerator and denominator, that fraction equals 1.
Let's move on to number 2 where we have 6.
For this one, we have a whole number.
So the first thing that we need to do is write this whole number in fractional form.
That way, we have a numerator and a denominator and we're able to flip that fraction.
So to write a whole number in fractional form, all we need to do, I'll rewrite it underneath here,
we put that whole number over 1.
So that's 6 in fractional form.
Now we're able to flip.
So our denominator becomes our numerator and our numerator becomes our denominator.
So the reciprocal of 6 is 1 sixth.
This is our reciprocal.
So let's multiply our whole number in fractional form, 6 over 1, times 1 sixth, to show that we get 1.
So numerators, 6 times 1 is 6.
Denominators, 1 times 6 is 6.
Same numerator, same denominator, we get 1.
So again, when it comes to reciprocals, we need to think flip.
And when we multiply by the reciprocal, we get 1.
So there you have it. That was a basic explanation of reciprocals.
I hope that helped.
Thanks so much for watching.
Until next time, peace.
