welcome to math with mr j

in this video i'm going to cover percent
of change
and specifically percentage increase
we have two examples that we're going to
go through together
in order to get this down now when we
calculate
a percent of change we need to take the
amount of change
so the new number minus the old number
and then divide by the old number
we lastly multiply by 100 so when we do
the amount of
change divided by the old number we're
going to get a decimal
we multiply by 100 to convert that
decimal
to a percent let's jump into number one
where we have 12 to 15. so we start with
a 12
and now we have a 15. so we can see that
we had
an increase so let's plug our numbers in
to our formula to calculate percent of
change
so we need to take the new number which
is 15
and subtract the old so 15
minus 12 gives us an amount of change
of 3. we need to divide by the old
number so the old or
original number is 12
and then multiply by 100 now i do want
to mention that it's very
important to always divide by the old or
original number because that's the
number that changed
we want the percentage change relative
to the number we started with
we are looking at the percent that that
number changed
all right so 3 divided by 12 that's
going to give us
25 hundredths point two five
we need to multiply that by one hundred
in order to convert it to a percent
so we can move the decimal twice to the
right when multiplying a decimal by one
hundred
so one two and we end up with
25 percent so we had a
25 increase 25
increase and that's our final answer
for number one let's try another one and
move on to number two
where we have 50 so we start with a 50
and now we have 82 so we need the amount
of
change the new number minus the old
number
so the new number is 82 minus the old
or original and we end up with 32
so the amount of change is 32
and now divide by the old which is 50.
multiply by 100 to convert it to a
percent
so 32 divided by 50 is going to give us
64 hundredths or 0.64
let's move the decimal twice to the
right to multiply that by 100
so 1 2 and we end up with
64 percent so we had a
64
increase and that's our
final answer so there you have it
there's how you calculate a percent of
change and we specifically looked at
percentage
increase so i hope that helped thanks so
much for watching
until next time peace
