REQUEST: What would be more helpful is to show rooms that don’t work, explain why, correct it, then show the results. Sometimes rearranging and editing is what I struggle with. I already follow a lot of what this video goes over but when I put it all together, something still feels off. I have a very small house and I gravitate towards a maximalist style, so balancing that with my tight room sizes is a challenge and I need to see how I can smoosh it all together better without adding additional stuff!
Welcome back to Susie Anderson Home.
If you've ever felt overwhelmed by design choices
or struggled with balancing style and practicality,
you're not alone.
Many people dream of creating a timeless home
but aren't sure where to start.
Maybe you've felt like your home lacks character,
thought timeless design means avoiding trends entirely,
been working with a limited budget,
feel like something is missing,
or you need to design with children and pets in mind.
If any of these resonate, then today's video is for you.
Today, I'll be sharing our top five interior design tips
for a timeless home.
So let's get started.
What does timeless design actually mean?
Timeless refers to something not affected
by the passage of time or changing trends.
In interior design, this means creating spaces
that will remain sophisticated, elegant, and layered.
However, timeless design is also subjective.
It's about asking yourself, what does timeless mean to you?
Step one, add character to your home.
Character is created by layering different textures,
styles, finishes, and materials.
This layering gives your home depth and visual interest,
which is essential for creating a timeless feel.
Pairing contrasting elements, smooth with rough,
soft with hard, aged with new, and glossy with matte
helps achieve this balance.
Some materials naturally stand the test of time,
aging beautifully while adding warmth
and character to your home.
Some of these include natural stones,
such as marble, limestone, and soapstone,
which develop a rich patina over time.
Solid hardwoods like oak, walnut, teak, and mahogany,
which gain depth and warmth with age.
Rattan, a durable material
that is one of my personal favorites.
Textiles like linen, jute, leather, and cotton.
Metals like brass, bronze, copper, and iron,
which develop a distinctive patina.
And plaster finishes,
such as lime wash and Venetian plaster.
By incorporating these materials,
your home will not only feel more layered and inviting,
but will also tell a story that evolves with you.
Step two, balancing timeless design with trends.
Timeless design isn't about avoiding trends completely,
it's about incorporating them in a way that enhances
and refreshes your space without dominating it.
The key is balance.
Here's how to achieve it.
Keep foundational pieces neutral and streamlined.
Choose simple, straight, or organic forms
for large furniture like sofas, beds,
dining tables, and cabinets.
And prioritize neutrals like white, beige,
taupe, black, brown, and soft grays.
Introduce trends through smaller accents.
Reserve bold colors and patterns,
trending shapes, and statement designs
in small-scale textiles and decor items
that can be swapped out as desired.
Introduce pattern thoughtfully.
Prioritize patterns like stripes,
plaid, herringbone, botanical motifs,
geometric designs, or damask.
We also recommend incorporating one-of-a-kind pieces.
Think antique furniture, vintage artwork,
or handcrafted decor.
These items make your home feel personal and curated,
rather than driven by fleeting trends.
One style that captures this balance is transitional design,
which blends classic and contemporary elements
to create a space that's both fresh and elegant.

Step three, budget-friendly tips and slow decorating.
Creating a timeless home on a budget
is about prioritizing quality over quantity.
We recommend the slow design approach.
Take your time to invest in well-made, stylish,
and durable pieces that will outlast trending replicas
or poorly-made alternatives.
Start with second-hand or vintage furniture,
particularly hardwood pieces.
They're often more affordable than new items
and can be easily refinished.
When incorporating trends, focus on affordable accents
like reversible cushion covers, bedding, fresh flowers,
plush towels, or thrifted finds to refresh your space.
Step four, designing with children or pets in mind.
Designing a timeless home with children or pets
doesn't mean you have to compromise on style.
It's about understanding your unique needs
and finding ways to balance durability
with design in a way that feels sophisticated and elegant.
Here's how to achieve that balance.
Flooring, choose low-maintenance finishes
like natural oak, cork, quality vinyl,
and jute, sisal, or indoor-outdoor rugs in neutral colors
to help conceal pet fur and stains.
Upholstery, opt for durable fabrics like leather,
sunbrella, high-performance velvet, or ultra suede.
You can also invest in machine-washable covers
or use throws to protect furniture.
Easy-to-clean surfaces, prioritize smooth,
wipeable surfaces and glossy paint finishes.
And look for ways to seamlessly integrate pet accessories
like bowls and beds into your decor.
Step five, our five L's of styling.
Our five L's of styling formula is a step-by-step guide
that can elevate any room, vignette, or design.
It's a method I use with all my clients
as well as in my own home and stores
to create a curated, intentional space.
The best part, you can return to this formula
whenever your space needs more depth,
personality, or a fresh look.
Here's a quick overview.
Lighting.
Lighting is one of the most powerful tools in design,
essential for creating a warm and inviting atmosphere.
To achieve the desired effect, think of lighting in layers.
Ambient lighting, this is your base layer,
often from ceiling fixtures
that provide overall illumination.
Accent lighting adds depth and character
by highlighting specific elements
such as artwork or architectural details.
Task lighting such as table and floor lamps
or adjustable wall lamps are designed for activities
like reading or working
and help to reinforce your design style.
And mood lighting, which creates an intimate atmosphere
through elements like candles, salt lamps,
dimmer switches, or smart globes.
Layering.
As mentioned earlier, layering adds depth,
visual interest, and character to your space.
Here are a few tips for effective layering.
Balance visual and tactile textures.
Visual texture refers to the patterns
or details you can see,
like wood grain, wallpaper patterns, or fabric weaves.
Tactile texture refers to the physical feel of materials
such as velvet, faux fur, leather, or stone,
each offering its own unique sensory experience.
Consider scale.
Introduce different shapes, sizes, and heights
in your decor to create visual interest.
And ensure cohesion.
Choose a color palette or material family
that works together,
allowing for subtle contrasts that add interest
but don't compete or clash.
Something loved.
Something loved refers to incorporating pieces
that hold personal significance,
items that reflect your style, culture,
memories, or interests,
whether it's color, pattern, motive, or material.
These pieces should evoke a connection,
making your home feel uniquely yours.
Something living.
Incorporating living elements into your space
is an effortless yet impactful way to add beauty,
color, shape, structure, and vitality.
Without this, a room can feel static
or like something's missing.
Something with luster.
Lastly, luster adds the finishing touch to any space,
giving it a polished and sophisticated feel.
Here are some of my favorite ways to add luster.
Metallic hardware and decor.
Glass vases, candle holders, and bowls.
Glossy ceramics.
Lacquered wood, glass, or high-gloss painted furniture.
And mirrors, which not only visually expand a room
but also double the impact
of natural and artificial lighting.
Thank you so much for watching.
I hope these tips help you create a home
that feels timeless and personal to you.
