Charlie Chaplin, the man who made the whole world laugh,
hid a life full of tragedies, scandals and secrets.
How did he go from being the idol of silent cinema
to ending up as an exiled, accused of treason and wrapped
in one of the most macabre episodes of Hollywood.
And the most surprising thing is that his worst tragedy
Childhood marked by pain.
Chaplin was born in 1889 in London, in the most extreme poverty.
His alcoholic father abandoned him.
His mother, a failed singer, ended up in a psychiatric hospital.
Charlie and his brother spent seasons in orphanages,
without enough food, sleeping in beds shared with other abandoned children.
His first performance was almost by accident.
When his mother lost her voice in a theater,
he, at just 5 years old, replaced her on stage.
The audience burst into laughter and Chaplin discovered
that he could turn his pain into comedy.
But that laugh would be the mask of an emptiness that would chase him all his life.
The rise to fame.
In his adolescence, he joined a theater company and soon traveled to the United States.
There he found success in silent cinema, creating his most famous character, the tramp.
With that cane, hat and mustache, Chaplin became the first global cinema idol.
At a time when there was no television or internet,
his face was recognized in every corner of the planet.
At 26 years old, he was already a millionaire
and became one of the founders of the United Artists studios,
controlling not only his performance, but also the direction, scripts and music of his films.
But the man who made the world laugh,
hid an obsessive character and a dark side that very few dared to face.
The feared perfectionist.
Chaplin was an extreme perfectionist.
He filmed the same scene more than 300 times if he was not satisfied.
His actors feared him because he could spend hours screaming at them
until he achieved the exact expression he was looking for.
That obsession led him to create masterpieces such as Modern Times and The Great Dictator.
Films that are still studied in film schools today.
But that same obsession made him a tyrant in his personal life,
especially in his romantic relationships.
And here begins the most controversial part of his life.
Because Chaplin could never escape scandals,
romantic scandals and lawsuits.
Chaplin married four times, many with much younger women than him.
His second wife, Leta Gray, was only 16 years old when she got involved with him.
What at that time generated a media scandal that almost destroyed his career.
He was also sued several times for paternity,
as with Joan Berry in a trial where even primitive DNA tests were used for the time.
Although the exams exonerated him,
justice forced him to recognize the girl as his daughter.
The newspapers called him a pervert, predator,
and his public image began to wither.
But the worst was yet to come when Chaplin decided to directly challenge
the most powerful man of the moment, Adolf Hitler.
Chaplin against Hitler
In 1940, Chaplin premiered The Great Dictator,
a satire against Hitler and Nazism.
It was a brave act, he made fun of the Nazi leader
when many in the United States were still silent.
The film made him a hero for some,
but also an enemy for the most conservative sectors.
And soon, in the middle of the Cold War,
he was accused of being a communist.
The FBI, led by J. Edgar Hoover, watched him day and night.
Chaplin went from being the most beloved actor
to the number one enemy of the US government.
And that's when his life took a turn he never imagined.
The country that had made him a legend,
expelled him forever.
Exile and Decline
In 1952, when he traveled to London to present a film,
the US authorities revoked his entry permit.
Chaplin was declared an ungrateful person
and never returned to live in the United States.
He settled in Switzerland with his last wife,
Ona O'Neill, with whom he had eight children.
He lived surrounded by luxury,
but always feeling like an exile,
a homeless man.
Although he was still a movie legend,
he was no longer the same.
The world had changed
and Chaplin was trapped
in his memories of glory and scandals.
But even after his death,
his story took a macabre turn.
The Last Mystery
In 1977, Chaplin died in Switzerland
at the age of 88.
But months later, the unthinkable happened.
A group of thieves desecrated his grave
and stole his body,
demanding a millionaire ransom to his family.
The police took weeks to recover it
and the body was buried in a concrete vault
to avoid new attempts.
A grotesque ending
for a man who had dedicated his life
to making people laugh.
Chaplin went from misery to fame,
from being an idol
to being a political persecutor
and expelled from Hollywood,
since even after his death
he was persecuted.
And now the question is,
was Chaplin a victim of his enemies
or of his own demons?
