Welcome to Block 7. Today, we will visit The Ledge House, a home designed by Desaichia
Architecture, located in Cornwall, Connecticut. This house combines history, sustainability,
and intelligent architectural design. Let's explore further. The Ledge House was built to
resonate with the history of the Connecticut Valley using an environmentally friendly material palette
Initially, an existing cabin that had been unsuccessfully expanded by a previous owner
was removed. The foundation of the cabin was reused, saving money and reducing construction
waste. The new footprint of the building moved the house closer to a large boulder,
a prehistoric glacial erratic deposited hundreds of thousands of years ago during the formation
of the Appalachian Mountains. This boulder serves as a rugged companion to the house
and acts as a muse for the uphill forest views. The form of the house was inspired by indigenous
barns of the area and the nearby historic West Cornwall covered bridge. A clever structural
system utilized balloon framing techniques. The beams, walls, sheathing, and a carefully
calibrated nailing pattern allow the structure to perform as a unified diaphragm, eliminating
the need for exposed cross bracing. The interior vaulted ceilings create open volumes of space
accentuated by clean planar surfaces. The living room, dining room, and kitchen form the nucleus
of a large breezeway through the house. This breezeway was strategically positioned to take
advantage of the valley views, the uphill cross-ventilating breezes, and the existing
boulder that serves as a rugged companion to the house and the landscape views. The exterior
of the house is clad in show-soogie band siding, offering a rot-resistant and bug-resistant finish
that articulates the iconic form of the building. The interior finishes are light and airy.
A master bedroom suite is located at one end of the house, while two guest bedrooms are at the
other end. The living area nucleus between them allows the owners and their guests to merge and
socialize in a lofted, open area that connects across the ledge to a forested terrace and a
valley terrace, creating a seamless flow of indoor and outdoor living.
Ledge House has a total area of 2,400 square feet and was completed in 2019. Several renowned
manufacturers contributed to the construction of this house, including Autodesk, Gaggenau,
Durevit, Kebany, and many more. The project involved various experts such as H. Howland
Associates and David Kufferman in engineering and A.B. Landscaping in landscape design.
The construction was undertaken by Classic Renovations, LLC, with a design team comprising
Catherine Chia, Arjun Desai, Troy Lacombe, and Brad Isnerd.
That's an overview of The Ledge House, a home that successfully combines history,
sustainability, and innovative architectural design. We hope this video provides you with
inspiration and ideas for your own home design. Thank you for watching and see you in the next
