Welcome to COP. Great to be here in Glasgow. Tackling the issue of climate
change is going to require all of us to do a lot more work. We've got to take
responsibility for what's going on on this planet. There really is no excuse
for inaction and there is nothing we can't accomplish if we work together and
Bloomberg Philanthropies is committed to doing as much as we can. A new goal is to
close a quarter of all the world's existing coal plants by 2025 and cancel
all proposed new coal plants as well. We need to go faster in fighting climate
change and phasing out coal is a big piece. Canada made that commitment. In the U.S.
cities really have held down the fort over the past four years. We are going to
expand our work, cutting emissions by at least 50% by the year 2030. Climate
change is not a problem for the planet. It is a problem for us. America remains
all-in forever. C40 cities are leading the way, helping their countries reach
the national targets. I'm so excited because of the enormous potential of our
cities to make a defining difference in this fight for the future of our planet.
I do want to thank His Royal Highness Prince William for his leadership on
climate and for inspiring a new generation of innovation with this great
prize. To our short prize finalists and winners, thank you for believing that we
can face the vast challenges in front of us today. The world's children are
counting on us. We can't let them down.
