Ahead of the release of Austin Butler and Zoë Kravitz’s new crime thriller ‘Caught Stealing,’ directed by Darren Aronofsky, Rolling Stone put the two movie superstars to the test on their 90s trivia. Which actor played themselves in Space Jam? What band was on Butt-Head’s shirt? Also…what was working with Bad Bunny on ‘Caught Stealing’ like? Butler and Kravitz take their best shots at answering Entertainment Editor David Fear’s questions, get a little competitive, and also drop some of their own wisdom — including Kravitz schooling us on what Pearl Jam actually means 👀 #movies
#zoekravitz on what the stars listened to while making 'Caught Stealing' which takes place in 90s New York: ""We were listening to some Portishead. Bjork, Radiohead. But this is stuff I listen to anyway, I feel like. Alanis Morissette.""
Austin Butler moving to New York shortly before Hurricane Sandy: “I moved out here, I did a TV show here when I was 19, 20. And so I got an apartment right near that 'Friends' house actually, on Barrow and Hudson, in the West Village. I was there during Hurricane Sandy, so I lost power for two weeks. Actually feeling the energy of New York and how it comes together around these events, that the community bands together, it was beautiful to see people feeding other people, and restaurants that they had to cook their food because they didn't have refrigerators that were working. And so we were having barbecues out on the street and I felt welcomed into New York at that time.”
Austin Butler on working with #badbunny: "He surprised me with how funny he was. He was prepared. He was also game for anything." Zoë Kravitz on working with Bad Bunny: "He takes risks. He made some real character choices, which is brave."
You're a buzzkill dog.
I'm winning and I like it, and I'm getting drunk and he's getting drunk.
It's jizz, dude.
What's up guys? I am here with the stars of Cod Stealing, Austin Butler and Zoe Kravitz.
We are going to play some 90s trivia.
Because your film takes place in the late 90s, it seems appropriate to ask you guys a bunch of questions
about the greatest decade of the 20th century.
I agree.
Can you tell me your top three reasons why?
Great music.
Yes.
Really good TV.
And the movie Space Jam.
Space Jam, 100%.
Amazing.
So here's how this is going to work.
I'm going to ask you guys questions.
Whoever hits the buzzer first gets to give me their answer.
If you get the question wrong, you've got to take a drink.
If you answer the question right, the other person's got to take a drink.
Oh.
If you both get the question right, then I have to take a drink.
So we're going to go for the first question here, okay?
These are not small.
I'm going to put this here.
Whiskey.
I'm going to take this and put it right here.
Woo!
My man.
Who isn't, and the key word here is isn't, a singer of a famous grunge band?
A, Eddie Vedder.
B, Darius Rucker.
C, Chris Cornell.
Or D, Layne Staley.
D?
Layne Staley was the singer of Alice in Chains.
Chris Cornell, of course, sang for Soundgarden.
Eddie Vedder sang for Pearl Jam.
Yeah.
And Darius Rucker, you probably know by his nom de stage Hootie of Hootie and the Blowfish.
That's not a grunge band.
I have a question.
Go ahead.
How old were you when you realized what Pearl Jam meant?
Right now.
What is Pearl Jam?
It's jizz, dude.
I was today's years old.
Yeah.
Is it not jizz?
It's a very poetic way to put it.
I think it sounds better than jizz.
Pearl Starters, right?
But I've also heard that it was a jam that I think Eddie Vedder's grandmother or somebody
made, where it was like a hallucinogenic jam, so you would take it and have visions.
Wait, what in it?
Wait a second.
I don't know.
A peyote, maybe?
Or it could have just been-
Peyote and jizz.
Well, you got Nana.
I was this amount of days old when I realized it actually stood for peyote and jizz.
Oh, wow.
So what were you guys listening to when you were filming Caught Stealing, by the way?
Did Darren give you guys a playlist to get you in that kind of 90s mindset?
We did.
We were sort of sharing playlists together.
Yeah, we were listening to some stuff.
We were listening to some Portishead.
Portishead, Mass of a Town.
Yeah.
York, Radiohead.
A lot of Radiohead.
Alliance Morissette.
This is stuff I listen to anyway, I feel like.
Yeah.
But then there was also the more, like, the song that I sang on a pool table, Bitch.
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
David Brooks.
Yeah, so good.
What other prep did you guys do to get into the mindset of Hank and Yvonne?
I just showed up.
I didn't know where.
It's all in your head.
I just showed up.
Actually, what I did watch was that Bringing Back the Dead.
Yeah, it's a great AMT movie.
Yeah.
It's a great Scorsese movie.
Yes.
I've never seen it.
Oh, it's so good.
It's written by Paul Schrader, who wrote Taxi Driver and Raging Bull.
Yeah, yeah.
I worked at a bar in the East Village.
He can do some cool, he knows how to do all that cool ----.
Do a little weird thing.
Yeah, I went to Senior Frog and, yeah.
Did anybody recognize you at Senior Frogs?
Yes.
But then I just gave them shots.
And then they chilled out.
And then, yeah, calmed them down.
All right, we got another question.
All right, let's go.
So, are you guys familiar with the TV show Friends?
Yes.
Ooh, yes.
Let's go.
What famous male star appeared on Friends as Monica's boyfriend?
Was it A, Don Johnson, B, Bruce Willis, C, Edward Norton, or D, Tom Selleck?
B.
You want to take a shot?
Oh, wait.
Monica, not Rachel.
Wait, Monica?
Yeah, Monica.
You want to take another shot?
No, because it's Rachel.
I did.
I was thinking of Rachel.
Wait, hold on.
****.
I'm guessing Edward Norton.
D.
Tom Selleck?
I just got confused between Monica and Rachel for a minute.
I'm wasted.
On who wants to be a millionaire that would not have flown?
Would it have?
We can share.
We'll share it.
There we go.
All right.
Here's my question before we go on to see Austin drink 17 more shots.
Inevitably.
What are your best memories of New York?
Like, when you think about New York, what do you think about?
I mean, I grew up here.
I've been here since I was 15.
Right.
I really enjoyed my high school was near Central Park.
So we would go and smoke weed at lunchtime in Central Park, which was very fun.
I mean, going to Kim's Video and stuff, all that was like such a vibe.
I used to hang out at Trash and Vaudeville a lot.
Yeah.
It was like a punk store on St. Mark's when St. Mark's was not Pinkberry.
Near Kim's Video, right?
Yeah, exactly.
Yeah.
And there was this guy that ran it named Jimmy who was just like, he was obsessed with Iggy Pop.
And he was like, just this like New York staple of a man.
And he would like stand outside and hang out.
And it was just like, it was a good time.
It was a scene.
It was a vibe.
It was a really cool shot.
It was a vibe.
So for me, I moved out here.
I did a TV show here when I was like 19, 20.
And so I got an apartment right near that friend's house, actually.
Yeah.
On Barrow and Hudson.
And in the West Village.
And I was there during Hurricane Sandy.
So I lost power for two weeks.
Oh my God.
Actually, feeling the energy of New York and how it comes together around these events that the community bands together.
Yeah.
It was so, it was beautiful to see people like feeding other people.
And like restaurants that they had to cook their food because they didn't have refrigerators that were working.
And so that we were having barbecues out on the street.
And it was, I just, I felt welcomed into New York at that time.
Community.
You take it on.
I love this game for you.
This is amazing.
Yeah, for me.
So given that it is the third reason that the 90s is the single best decade.
Pearl Jam, Space Jam.
Jizz and peyote, obviously.
So what actor played himself in Space Jam?
Oh, that's been so long.
Okay.
Was it A, Dan Aykroyd.
Uh-huh.
Okay, you need to relax, sir.
You need to relax your hand.
B, Bill Murray.
Oh, damn.
C, Chevy Chase.
Or D, Tim Allen.
Go ahead.
B?
Bill Murray.
She's right.
I'm ******* killing this game right now.
There you go.
All right.
Cheers.
No, I'm not going to share that one.
Okay.
Who's the actual star of Space Jam?
Bugs Bunny.
Bugs Bunny?
Oh, wow.
Wait, but is Space Jam?
Michael Jordan.
But I appreciate what you just said.
Who's the second biggest star in Space Jam after Michael Jordan is Bugs Bunny?
And who's the second most favorite bunny, celebrity-wise?
Is Jessica Rabbit considered a bunny?
No.
Right now?
Yeah, right now.
He might even be in your movie.
Bad Bunny.
Oh, I see what you mean.
These guys, they want to hit you until you tell them things.
But I believe that there has to be a better way to come to an understanding.
This is the question that everybody wants to know.
What was it like being on set working with Bad Bunny?
I didn't see any of the rock star elements.
All I saw was his guns.
He shows up with a lot of people.
He's got an entourage?
Yeah.
But it's like they're nice or it's lovely.
But they're lovely.
They're so nice.
They're funny.
He surprised me with how funny he was.
Oh, he's lovely.
He was prepared.
He was also game for anything.
He takes risks.
He really made some real character choices, which I think is great.
He dyed his hair red.
And has freckles.
Has freckles.
It's rad.
Freckles are rad.
Okay, two drinks in.
Freckles are rad.
Freckles are rad, guys.
I love you so much.
It's so great that we're doing this.
You have freckles.
I'm going to do two more, okay?
Because those are the drinks I have left.
Let's do...
Oh, come on.
Okay, we'll do a couple more.
Yeah.
Complete this Spice Girls lyric.
Oh, my God.
Love this game.
If you want to be my lover, A...
You got to get with my friends.
You got to get in line.
B, you got to bow down.
C, you got to get with my friends.
I already said it, though.
I already said it.
And D, you got to get yourself together.
So, which answer is it?
You got to get with my friends.
Okay.
Well, you were right.
Give me the ******* drink.
Okay.
I'm going to do another rapid fire one.
You look scared.
In the film High Fidelity, which is not to be confused with the TV show High Fidelity.
Okay, so here's how not to plan a career.
R.I.P.
We're doing a garbage, garbage show.
One of the best, best garbage shows I've ever seen.
I really do love that show.
Thank you.
What band t-shirt is Catherine Zeta-Jones wearing?
You'll know this one.
A, Blondie.
B, Kiss.
C, The Pretenders.
Or D, The Police.
The Pretenders.
Good job.
You didn't hit anything.
I was always afraid she would leave me for one of them.
And then she left me for one of them.
Wow, good memory.
I want three more questions.
Okay, I can do that.
Someone's got to pour some more whiskey here.
You're already winning.
I know, I want to win more.
You want to really win.
These future stars began on the Mickey Mouse Club except...
Okay, you...
Sir, let's put our hands here together.
Same place.
Good job.
These future stars began on the Mickey Mouse Club except...
Except.
Except being the key word here.
A, Britney Spears.
B, Justin Timberlake.
C, Nick Carter.
Or D, Christina Aguilera.
Nick Carter.
You can't put your hand...
There you go.
Good workout.
Finish this Sir Mix-a-Lot lyric.
I like the...
Remove your...
Remove your hand, sir.
Yeah, I was going to say, both put your hand near there.
Yeah, but you can't move it until you do it.
Levels the playing field a little bit.
You can't hover above, dawg.
Do you want to tell me this?
Tell you what?
Do we have to wait until he gets through with the last question?
That's a good question.
Because you on the Pretenders, you hit it on the Pretenders.
Yeah, and I think you hit...
Did you hit Nick Carter before the...
No, but he hovered above.
So, yes.
I'm going to make an official calling here.
You are not allowed to hit the buzzer until all four answers.
And you're also not allowed to hover above.
So, you have to keep your hand here until he's done.
That's right.
Okay.
I got you.
Finish this Sir Mix-a-Lot lyric.
I got you.
From the famous Sir Mix-a-Lot song.
I like big butts and I cannot lie.
A...
Wait, this is...
Come on.
You other brothers can't deny.
B...
What are the rules?
What?
Wait until all four are done.
Wait, wait, wait.
Oh, I thought that was the other lyric.
No, no.
I like big butts and what are the rules?
Wow, that's very nice.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
B, why should I deny?
What are the rules?
Am I allowed to touch?
C, even white dudes can't deny.
And D, you other guys can't deny.
A...
Those other brothers can't deny.
A is right.
Here you go.
No, no, no.
We both got that.
You absolutely did.
Did you guys both get it?
No, I did it first.
100%.
Was your hand on top of my hand?
You knew that I knew the answer.
That's not the point.
You knew that I knew the answer.
Here you go, little baby.
One more, one more.
One last question.
What man's name appears on Butthead's shirt?
On Beavis and Buddy.
Ooh.
Yes.
Is it A, ACDC...
Yeah.
B, Metallica, C, Slayer, or D, Pantera?
ACDC.
Yes.
Yes!
You get the last shot.
Well done.
Caught Stealing, August 29th.
Everyone's gonna go.
They're all gonna see it.
Have a great time.
Mohawks.
Cats and Mohawks.
Mostly cats and Mohawks.
I like cats.
The **** did you get me into?
Thanks, you guys.
This was great.
This was fun.
Thank you so much.
We should do this again sometime.
Yeah, next week.
I'll see you on Thursday.
All right, I'll see you on Thursday.
Honestly, like, 90s trivia nights is a vibe.
Thank you.
That was actually a lot of whiskey.
