He appeared on my ring camera.
I saw this really scrawny, malnourished animal in my driveway.
I thought it was a coyote at first.
He just didn't look healthy at all.
So I started to leave food and water out,
and he just started coming every day.
Within a week, he was filling out.
I learned, once I did more research,
that he did have an owner.
He's a retired veteran, disabled.
The dog was given to him, and then after one hour,
he let him off the leash, and the dog took off.
So the dog was in the woods for two months since.
He was only seven months old,
so he was a puppy living in the woods by himself.
He was constantly on guard,
constantly looking over his shoulder,
scared, skittish, nervous.
When 24 hours would go by and he would not come here,
I started to get worried and panicked.
I had anxiety every day knowing this dog
was living in the woods.
My trail cameras were picking up bears, coyotes,
so I was very worried that something
could have happened to him, but then he would come.
I reached out to the local authorities here
and said I'd be happy to help capture him,
and eventually we did set up a trap on the property,
tried to lure him in with food,
but he just would not go near it.
So we started leaving the garage open for him.
We wanted him to have a shelter.
The first time face-to-face, he just looked at us and ran.
He darted into the woods.
It was just such a working progress.
The trail cams let us know when he was on his way,
and I would sit on the back deck,
and I wouldn't look at him.
I'd act like I'm busy, just doing my own thing,
and slowly, over time, I started throwing hunks of chicken
and meat at him when he was in view.
Oh, he's chewing on tree bark.
We gotta get him some toys.
I got a toy for you.
I think the turning point for him is when I bought toys.
So I started throwing toys at him,
and he would just get really excited.
Little by little, I was going outside
and showing him I'm not a threat.
I wanted him to really come to me on his own terms.
I never had dogs.
Oh, my goodness.
And honestly, I was just as nervous as he was.
I was like, I just wanna feed him
and get him to his owner, that's all.
But we ended up growing a bond,
and I realized that he was trusting.
We both started to trust each other.
It was something that grew over two months.
And we're at the point where he's looking forward
to seeing me every morning.
He just looked like he wanted to come in the house
and be a part of the family.
He was almost a little jealous.
We just tried to keep in touch with the owner,
sending pictures and videos,
and he just stopped communicating with us.
I was really concerned that once we had this dog captured,
where is he gonna go?
Because his owner didn't seem really worried about him.
Oh, my God.
Okay, hold on.
Oh, my God, babe.
You're a good boy.
Oh, this is definitely gonna work, Paul.
This is gonna work.
And so at that point,
when we were slowly trying to lure him into the garage.
Babe, babe.
Oh.
I talked to the authorities about capturing him
and coming to pick him up.
I said, I wanna know where he's gonna go
before we just let anybody come in here and take him.
We didn't want the dog.
We just wanted to help the dog.
And I grew attached, and I certainly grew a bond,
and I just was not comfortable
just letting him go to anywhere.
Not to a shelter, not after all the work we put in
to build this dog's trust,
just to be like, here, take him and put him in a shelter
for God knows how long.
I was like, no.
We felt really comfortable
that he was following me so much
that he would eventually follow me in the house.
We eventually made the plan
to try to lure him into our workshop,
and we got him in.
What do you wanna do?
This dog chose us, that's for sure.
And then in the end, we chose him.
And that's it.
From that point on, he's been sleeping in the house.
I asked if we could adopt the dog
because the owner pretty much abandoned him.
We worked with Missing Dogs of Massachusetts
to get the ownership transferred over to us.
He sleeps so peacefully now.
He's happy.
He's eager to be with us.
He loves to lay down next to me.
He's very sweet.
He's so smart.
He's playful.
He just wants to play.
He's a little angel, and I love him so much.
Sometimes the best things that happen are unexpected.
