I dive into an authentic Vietnamese breakfast noodle spot and enjoy a steaming Vietnamese hotpot in Da Nang. But not everything goes as planned — I also deal with a rough case of food poisoning while traveling in Vietnam.
Restaurants I went to: Bún Cá Cô Ba - Nha Trang Vietnam Lẩu Cá Dìa - I LIKE FOOD. Quán Bún cá thố đá rộng nhất Nha Trang Ngon Thi Hoa Restaurant - Đà Nẵng HOI AN CUISINE Restaurant - 73 Tran Phu
This has got to be the best [music] view
ever when you're sitting on the toilet.
[music] Best view ever. Yeah, this is
for sure the hotel room with the best
view I've ever stayed at. Period. This
is just insanity. I look at this.
Here we go.
I think for the rest of the time I'm in
Vietnam. I don't care what I'm eating in
the morning, it always has to include a
bowl of noodles wherever I am. And this
is something I never tried before. Wow,
>> this looks interesting. This is my first
time having fish noodles in Vietnam.
I've never seen noodles like this
before. Looks like sausage, fish cakes,
thin rice noodles, and check [music]
this out. Chili fish intestines pork
fish cake which apparently they make in
house here. This thing is loaded. All
right, let's try this broth.
Oh, that's so good. M.
Wow, that's good. Just tell me this is a
fish broth.
Oh my gosh, it's so yummy. Super light.
Ridiculous amounts of umami in this
broth. and so fragrant from all the
herbs. And you can add more herbs.
Obviously, there's herbs, sprouts,
banana flour, and I think this will
definitely be very good when it's
brightened up by some citrus. So, she's
saying add some of this this chilies in
here, too.
Oh, man. I think I added a dab too much
chilies.
Still good. The owner was sitting next
to me and she's saying soup is all fish.
It's so light. Such a beautiful deep
flavor.
What I thought was a sausage is not fish
eggs. Fish eggs in here.
Noodles are beautifully light, too.
That goes really good with the broth. I
have eaten jellyfish. Yeah, this right
here. This is fish eggs. Fish roll. I've
eaten a lot of jellyfish in my day. I've
never had a noodle soup before.
Oh,
very snappy. That's pretty nice and
soup. And um she brought over a little
dish of chilies for me to dip the fish
cakes and the sausages in.
Yeah, that was a fishcake.
M. It's really bouncy. really bouncy and
nice
intestines.
I love trying
all the different noodles in this
country.
Like even the basic one, noodles like
fur, bombay, this are things I could eat
for breakfast every single day in my
life.
I just felt so good going down. For me,
I feel like it wakes me up way more than
coffee or anything else. with just a
nice pipe and hot bowl of noodle soup.
And this bowl has everything. Fish,
eggs, intestines, fishcake, and what I
thought was pork,
slices of fish.
It's so interesting because every bite
you take of this noodle soup, the
different seafood parts all had
different textures, you know,
>> from the fishcake to the jellyfish to
the fried fishcake, it's all different.
So, no bite is boring.
>> It's awesome. Very fitting noodle soup
for this town.
By the way, everybody over there was so
so sweet. If you ever hear you want to
try some unique noodles, I highly
recommend it. All right, let's go to
breakfast number two. This is what will
be interesting.
So, this is something you're going to
see pretty much all across Vietnam and
many parts of Southeast Asia. like
there's a crosswalk, but nobody will
really slow down for you. So, my
strategy has been avoid the big cars and
hope the smaller bikes will just ride
around you. So far, still alive. This is
the restaurant I'm going to cuz when
you're in this city, you got to eat
seafood. But yeah, this is it. I like
food and that is why I'm here cuz I like
food.
Wow, this place is heating up. So, this
seafood restaurant, I initially came
because I wanted to get their tuna eye
hot pot. It's basically a hot pot with a
ginormous tuna eye. Now, I've had a tuna
eye before. I actually kind of like it.
It is still a bit intimidating, but when
I got here, they told me that um
actually I really should try their
rabbit fish hot pot. So, if that's their
specialty here, that's what I'm going to
get. And right now, I've definitely left
the touristy district. This is all local
stuff around here. This is exciting. And
I think all their fish, all their
seafood. Well, for most restaurants in
the city, it's all fresh. My food is
here. There's a ladle. There's some
spoons, chopsticks. So, this is the
rabbit fish. The hot pot they give you.
It looks like a combination of a lot of
different herbs and veg. Looks like
there's some dicons in here. Tomatoes,
onions, basil. Smells very herby.
Ooh, sour. A little spicy. They also
give you, of course, ginormous plate of
herbs, rice noodles, and this is the
rabbit fish. I've never seen a hot pot
where they bring you like the whole fish
before. They also brought over some uh
okra. I'm just using my chopsticks to to
put the fish in the hot pot. These
definitely look like fresh fish. This
does not look like something they pull
from a freezer. I've eaten a lot of hot
pot in my day. I've never put a whole
fish in a hot pot before. Wow. I put two
in. I guess close the lid and let it
cook. Oh, actually some more herbs in
here as well. I'm not really sure what
to do with the okra. I think they mean
just just eat it as is. Don't put it
into into the soup and just eat the okra
as is with the fish. That's what I think
they mean, but not 100% sure. And to eat
with the hot pot, I also got some
anchovi fried rice.
M. Not bad. Pretty vibrant. They told me
to add some um the shiakei sauce onto
it. Although the rice is already pretty
flavorful on its own. This is before I
knew they're going to give me a giant
plate of rice noodles.
See if my fish is ready. I think this is
ready. They gave me a a plate to put the
fish in. Said to add some of this onto
the fish.
Wow. This is a really, really tender
fish. Got to be careful with the bones.
That's really good.
M. Oh, that is a tender tender tender
fish. The flavor of the fish is very
mild.
I think what I should be doing is making
a dipping sauce. Some chilies, fish
sauce, squeeze of lime, and I think just
a little bit of the broth to kind of
dilute the things down a bit. By the
way,
oh, this broth is so much better now.
Now that the fish has been cooking in
there for a while, fresh herbs. Add this
to my dipping sauce. Rice noodles. Add
some fish to it. I don't know if what
I'm doing is correct or not, but this
works for me.
Oh yeah. Rice noodles with the fresh
herbs with the tender fish. Awesome. And
every time after you take a bite.
I recommend sipping the soup.
Oh, so nice. There's actually not a lot
of bones in this fish. Remember, never
flip the fish over.
That is awesome. Ha. Three fish might
seem like a lot. It's not.
really really good.
So tender and nice. Honestly, a little
fish sauce added to the fish itself
already tastes so great. It's such a
clean fish. Really no fishiness
whatsoever. My first fish is done. I get
the second one out of here and then put
my third fish in. I think I should have
just put them all in at the same time
and let it cook. I think the most
difficult part about this meal is eating
a hot pot outside. Oh my gosh, I'm
sweating. My tongue's on fire. I think
it's worth it.
This is definitely a super unique hop
experience.
If you like hot pot and you're in the
city, I would highly recommend giving
this a try. The fish is delicious. One
of the cleanest fish I've ever been
into. Obviously, this whole meal, the
flavors are so bright and herby. And if
you come yourself, just the small hot
pot alone can definitely feed two to
three people. If you come here with more
people, they also have a big hot pot.
Yeah, I wouldn't be intimidated by
having hot pot in this heat. This thing,
trust me, the food is a delicious
distraction. I think if I do this again,
I wouldn't get the fried rice cuz the
rice noodles. That's plenty right there.
Plus, this soaks up all the delicious
soup inside the hot pot. I finished the
fish. I finished the rice noodles.
The broth is absolutely incredible right
now. And what really makes this taste so
good is the fresh herbs. Fresh herbs and
the fish and the rice noodles is such a
winning combination. I'm about to die
from the heat. It's hot outside and
boiling up inside.
Can't get enough of that soup, though.
Oh, it's so good. Oh, man. I think this
is definitely enough food to hold me
over till dinner. Maybe grab a dessert,
ice cream, or something. And dinner. I
think dinner is going to be incredible.
This I'm going full on seafood feast
tonight. I'll see you then.
Wow, that giant hot pot of fresh fish
and rice, everything under $10. My
goodness. Oh man, I'm so full. Let's see
if we find some coffee.
All right, it's night time. It's dinner
time. I don't think I'm going to dinner.
This has only happened a few times in my
life, but I got food poisoning. I have
an upset stomach. I'm running a little
fever. Got the chills. And I don't know
exactly where I got it from. Um I
[music] obviously ate a lot of stuff
yesterday, a lot of stuff this morning.
Ate at some places I didn't film with
friends. So, I don't know where I got it
from. Or it could just be my immune
system is sucky right now. But
regardless, um I really wanted to to go
grab one last seafood feast in this
city. get the street vendor grill
lobster. But yeah, I don't think that's
happening. I can't even think about
food, which doesn't happen a lot with
me. But I think that the the best course
of action because I'm going to other
parts of Vietnam starting tomorrow. Best
course of action is just not eat
anything. Give this 24 hours. Hopefully,
it'll go away tomorrow morning. The last
thing you want to do when you do have
food poisoning is just continue to shove
food in your stomach. From experience,
drink a lot of fluids. Don't eat. Take
some Pepto-Bismol, [music] maybe some
charcoal pills. Yeah, I don't think it's
too bad. Like, it's not a big fever.
It's just a tiny bit. should be fine.
See you in the morning.
>> The next day,
>> it's been about 30 hours since I last
ate something. And since then, I
traveled to Daong. That was a rough
trip. Got to be honest, that flight was
super rough. I think right now I I still
can't eat normal foods. I'm starving,
though. So, I think I'm going to go get
some crackers and yogurt. Not the kind
of stuff I I I thought I'd be eating
here, but it is what it is.
>> [music]
>> Check out this amazing view from this
hotel room. $80 a night. Yogurt,
although I forgot a spoon, and vegetable
crackers. This coconut, you could pretty
much just penetrate it with a plastic
straw. I already poked a hole in here. I
think I should have got a smaller straw.
This is so good. So, not the first time
I had food poisoning while on a trip.
And if you're traveling to another
country, I would recommend bringing some
charcoal pills. When I first started
traveling, I used to bring charcoal
pills with me everywhere. And I didn't
really have much of a problem. But
recently, I got a little little
arrogant. I was thinking like my stomach
is good, but uh I do have some
medications, some Pepto. This is all
good stuff to have. So, I feel like I'll
be good by tomorrow. Still a little fee.
The key is not to push. What I'm craving
for right now is burger and fries.
Obviously, that's not great for you. So,
eat some crackers, eat some yogurt,
drink some hydrate. Yeah, like I said, I
think tomorrow morning should be good to
go. I'll see you then.
Good morning from felt a little better
today. Went to [music] the breakfast
buffet at the hotel. Had a bunch of
baguette. Breakfast buffet is actually
really good at the courtyard. [music]
Fresh baguette. So, this morning going
to go for some breakfast here.
About four more people in our group got
food poisoning. [music]
So, we're thinking it could be the ice
that's in the drinks. Not taking any
more chances for the rest of this trip.
Charcoal pills.
>> I ordered it, too, like you told me. But
>> so, this place has just a mix of western
and Vietnamese dishes.
>> Still craving that burger.
Tiny bit nervous for my first noodle
soup.
>> It's good though. It's worth the risk. I
mean, this region, you got to just eat
the noodle soup. Daan is of course right
near and that's where Bulma is from. So,
[music] there's a lot of these type of
dishes, noodle soups in this city.
So, this is a crab noodles. It's
basically bumble way with crab balls.
Oh, that's not a crab ball. This is a
pork ball. This is a crab ball right
here.
>> Oh, it's so good. There's also beef
shank and of course also a giant chunk
of blood.
Such a nice beefy soup. Always a little
hesitant because noodle soup on a fast
stomach, it's probably not the best.
This actually feels really good going. I
haven't had food in about 30 some hours.
>> That's a nice chunk of blood.
>> Beef is good. Needle's good. Tons of
meat in here.
>> Feels good. Feels like I'm back. Welcome
to the Marble Mountains. And the legend
said that the dragon flew to a nearby
beach, laid an egg that hatched into a
beautiful girl, and the shells of the
eggs turned into these mountains.
Oh, the temperature probably dropped by
at least 10, 15° once you enter the
caves.
It's not humid either. This is not a bad
place to live. Wow, that is pretty
majestic cave right in the middle.
Oh my gosh. This little trail leads all
the way up there. This is a lot a lot of
stairs. Whoa. This area says the gate to
hell.
And that's the depiction of hell right
there.
And this is apparently judgment hall
where you will be judged after death. So
I'm in a depth set of hell right now.
Literally
does feel a lot hotter down here. This
really interesting place. You definitely
get your steps in here. Apparently, I
just went down to the first level of
hell. There's 18 levels of hell total.
Yeah, I'm good with hell. That's a
little too much. So, while you're in
[music] hell in the cave, this is the
stairway to heaven or I guess the
elevator to heaven. You can also climb
this. [music] There's actually a
stairway that goes all the way up here.
I imagine it takes a while and you get a
pretty nice [music] look over the city.
It is nice and breezy up here.
Wow. Who knew heaven still has so many
stairs? Hey, this is the top.
Oh, that's a lot of work to get up here.
I [music] am so not in shape anymore.
Oh, I get home. I got to get back in
shape.
This is a UNESCO World Heritage site and
it's like stepping into a postcard.
Look at that. Mangoes. Numb duck my
mangoes to be exact. So, here's some
really interesting facts about Hawaii's
ancient city. Besides being so
beautiful, again, this is a world
heritage site. It features over 800
historic buildings. It's also known as
the tailoring [laughter] capital. So,
you'll see uh shops all over the place
where you [music] can get custom made
clothing in as little as 24 hours. And
what's great, you can walk around
because no cars allowed. And apparently
one thing you have to do when you're
here is the coconut boats.
You don't get to paddle. Look at the
line for this thing. Holy moly.
>> There we go. Going down the river and a
coconut.
And apparently
wear a hat.
Oh man, when you have so [music] many
coconuts on the river, we're bound to
crack together.
So, right now I'm at this really
traditional Hawaiian restaurant and they
serve these combo meals with dishes
coming in really small little plates.
I really like these noodles. Tastes like
a freshly fried rice crackers. There's
nothing spicy about this. I think maybe
just a tiny bit of heat. The pork is
really good.
These noodles are really, really good.
Wide, really chewy rice noodles.
This thing is definitely a flavor
soaker. Oh, I forgot to squeeze my lime.
>> Even better with the spray of citrus.
Yeah, this is super good. This does
taste like a bite of tradition right
here. A classic classic noodles and
something I really haven't tried so far
in Vietnam. This is a traditional rice
dumpling.
>> Dumpling wrapper is such a chewy
texture. Like really chewy texture. Pork
also really refreshing with the herbs.
This is going to be a crispy spring
roll.
That's 100% rice wrapper right here.
This is as crispy as spring roll
wrappers get.
>> And there's a sweet dish. This is a red
bean soup.
>> Really sweet. Really sweet. Comfortable
lunch. I think I used to have stuff like
that when I was a kid. My family would
cook mum bean soup or red bean soup
always with tons of sugar. Sweet,
delicious, and it brings you luck, man.
Oh, one thing I missed. It's one of my
favorite things in Vietnam. Chicken
rice.
Chicken rice with some crunchy papaya on
top.
>> I missed this. Probably my favorite rice
dish in Vietnam. I personally love
seeing traditional culture, traditional
architecture, traditional foods, and
today I've [music] experienced all three
and more at Huan. First of all, the
coconut boats. I would highly recommend
doing that. First of all, it's just so
serene riding down the river. While
sometimes it does get a little bumper
boaty, but overall super serene. It was
during sunset, so the temperature was
dropping and the sun was setting and it
was magic hours. Really nice. [music]
And then exploring ancient town. That's
something I've always wanted to do. It's
just so surreal walking through those
streets. You see so many shops, ancient
architecture, a bridge that was built, I
think was in the 1500s. The [music]
Japanese bridge that I saw at the end
with a temple in the middle.
Mind-blowing. So beautiful. I love
seeing things like this. The traditional
foods I loved as well. I'm still dealing
with the food poisoning. I'm not 100%.
I'm maybe at about 60%. [music] And
after eating everything, man, it hit me.
I enjoyed everything going down and then
it [music]
like 10 15 minutes later, the food start
fighting back. That 45 50-minute bus
ride back to the hotel, it felt like 45
hours. You know, it's one of those
things where I'm looking at my phone,
I'm like, "Oh, okay. [music] 45 minutes.
Let me try to keep myself busy, play a
game or something." So, I do that, check
back on my phone, and it's [music] 43
minutes to go. It's like that. I don't
think I've dealt with food group poison
this bad since I last went to India. I
think that was like five, six years ago.
I'm definitely getting better though. I
think prior to today, I couldn't even
think of food, which is very odd.
There's a breakfast buffet in the hotel.
I went to the breakfast [music] buffet.
Still had like a plate of food just
because, you know, you get a free hotel
breakfast buffet. You don't want to
waste that. But yeah, nothing really
just sat right. But despite all that,
such an amazing day. I mean, just so
amazing being able to do the coconut
bowl, explore ancient town. Definitely
bucket [music] list items crossed off
today. And as always, thank you all so
much for watching. on to we eat again.
