Our vintage RV road trip continues through Southern Idaho! Come along as we stay off-grid in our camper van, & explore the beauty of Idaho! Huge thanks to Anker SOLIX for sponsoring this video.
Whoa Nellie, this is a pretty sweet spot, huh? Yeah, it is. Allison actually picked this one
out. Man, she scored. This is sick. This might be one of the coolest spots we've ever tried to camp.
A little terrifying with the rocks hanging over us, but very cool. Check this out.
This is what we parked under. It's terrifying because there's this huge crack right there
and it looks like many things have fallen in the past. You can see all the rocks stuck in there.
I gotta get this back level. Is that good? That looks a little off.
There we go. Okay, well good morning adventurers once again from Idaho. It's actually afternoon.
Yeah, it is the afternoon. We just say good morning. It could be night time. We'll still
say good morning. Good morning. But as you guys know, we have been traveling in the winter time
in the north. It has been pretty chilly to say the least, sometimes very snowy. And so we've
been staying at a lot of RV parks mainly to make sure that we have electricity and plenty of water,
but it is slowly warming up. During the day when the sun is out, you'd almost think it's spring
time. And so we are sick and tired of paying for RV parks, so we're going off grid y'all.
Which is what Clementine was made to do you guys, but we also don't want to die of hypothermia in
the middle of winter. But the gods of spring are out in mid-February. We ended up just driving out
into the middle of the countryside in southern Idaho and we found this incredible spot that's
right in the middle of this canyon with all these epic mossy rock faces all over the place and then
a stream that runs right through it. So our plan over the next few days is to see all of these
unique spots in southern Idaho. The landscape is super surprising y'all. You have these rolling
pasture lands with volcanic rock underneath, huge snow-capped mountains off in the distance.
And it's crazy because you're just going through, there's sheep, there's farms, it's flat. You're
like man Idaho's boring and all of a sudden boom you're in a canyon like this. Yeah you see a sign
that says 35 miles an hour chain up and you're like I'm on a flat road what's happening and then
all of a sudden zoop. There's also a ton of just incredibly beautiful waterfalls in this area so
yes we are going to be chasing waterfalls y'all. I know they said to not do it but we're going to.
All right should we get our campsite all ready for the night? Yes we should. Check this out
you guys. Nobody else is here. We've got this whole little turnout area to ourselves at the end
of the line. I think there's a path over there, there's rock everywhere, there's a big stream over
here. It's gonna be freaking sweet. Full circle. Full circle. And here's Clementine.
All right Ruby is unhooked and ready to roll. This is the spot we decided to put Clementine in
for the night because you have that whole turnout where we started the video over there but over
here is this nice little private tucked away campsite. It's the end of the line so nobody
can come past us. There's a grill. We might need to fry up a steak or something. We got a ribeye in
there. What do you think? I think that sounds lovely. All right but for now there is a very
special rock formation that we've been dying to see that is just about a mile that way.
Luckily we got Ruby to whisk us away to it. Let's go on an adventure babe.
This is balanced rock. Can you guess why it got its name? Because it's balancing on this tiny
little rock underneath it y'all. We thought the cliffs where we're camping were sketchy.
This is super sketchy. It's about three feet thick at the bottom and it looks like it's already kind
of severed like it could fall at any moment and it's so top-heavy. It looks like you could just
blow on it and it would fall over but something's holding that thing up. It's there. I'm sure it'll
be here for many many more centuries or millennia but this spot is so neat because you go down the
canyon and when you come up the other side it's just sitting there right off the highway so you
can't miss it. You can climb right up to the base of this thing. It looks like it's barely hanging
on under here. If you look really closely you can see in this spot over here it looks like they kind
of piled some rocks in there and put some cement in there or something. I don't know if that's
cheating or what but I guess maybe they just don't want to lose their monument, lose all their
tourism to this area. What would you do right now if that started to fall? I've been thinking that
this whole time. I feel like it really would be in the movies where you're like and then you get
smooshed anyway. It looks like it wants to come right down on us. It reminds me of that scene from
Prometheus where the ship was falling on her and she just couldn't get out of the way of it no
matter what. No matter where you run. How's it going in there? All right. Y'all I feel like it's almost
summertime. It's making me so excited to be outside grilling. We haven't done this in forever. It's
really not even that cold out here but yeah it's a really nice vibe. She's just prepping stuff in
there. We got the heat going. The tunes going. Got the grill going over here. Oh yeah it's gonna be
good. It's gonna be so good. It is steak time. Oh yeah and look what else we got. Yeah we're doing a little
surf and turf. Yeah. We have literally never grilled shrimp in our entire lives so
I don't know how we're gonna do with it but it's gonna be good. It's gonna be delicious.
They're pre-cooked anyway so we can't kill ourselves. This is looking professional.
Well man we made a freaking feast. Look surf and turf y'all. We've got our little shrimp skewers
over here. We've got our vegetables and most importantly the steak and I'm pretty happy with
how it turned out. Okay so I'm gonna say medium well. So usually we shoot for medium. It's a
success all right considering it's a grill fire you know when we suck at grilling so all right
good. And don't forget the surf part of the surf and turf. Delicious shrimp. It's amazing. We're the
only ones here. We got our tunes cranked. We got our heater going. It's all completely free. Yeah
and the only thing you hear out there are like owls hooting off in the distance. It's really cool.
It's very serene. People still come here and they turn around and then they drive out. I don't know
why but it's always a little freaky. I don't think anyone's looking to come and kill the two of us in
the middle of some park right. I think we just always hope that our RV is goofy enough on the
outside that people are more scared of what's inside of it and they don't want to mess with us.
Yeah because they don't know that on the inside it looks like this and has a bunch of expensive
stuff in it. They just think it's like some ratty old RV. Well good morning y'all. We ended up having
a pretty freaking nice night. It was about the darkest campsite we've ever been to so it was a
really nice night. No one really showed up or anything but right as we woke up at about 9 a.m.
or so another camper showed up because it is Friday now so I think there's going to be quite
a few people here but that's why we kind of skedaddled out pretty quick because we wanted
to give them our campsite over there. But one of the reasons we really wanted to go off grid for
a little while is just to test how long we can really last with our utilities. So when we pulled
up to our campsite yesterday our electrical was at about 80 percent and it's down to about 55 or so
right now. Our water is down to about 50 percent. 20 to 30 percent per night is pretty reasonable.
If we could stop making meals inside and stop doing dishes that would help a lot
but it's just too fun to cook in here. And then of course we're running on propane heat which
works really well and it really lasts for pretty long. It only took about 10 percent. We started
at 60 and now it's at 50 and of course that gauge isn't super accurate but it's kind of a general
measurement. So yeah I'm feeling like you know two, three, four days, five days, six days. Spoiler
Eric really wants to do an entire week off grid. He's trying to convince me because I'm going on
three days of not washing my hair and dry shampoo does a lot. Dude you look so good. I can only do
so much. I even put on a skirt today because I was like maybe then people won't know how gross
I really am. All right. Onward. I guess we're done being the weird van butt down but damn it.
Try it again. Everyone knows what you're gonna say anyway. Okay we're done being the van down
by the river. Thanks Chris Barley. For lunch we found this super charming restaurant called the
Riverboat. We are getting Idaho fish and chips y'all. It is rainbow trout that is farmed right
here at a hatchery down the road. We're in this little town of Hagerman. Hagerman? Hagerman?
Just got this main street with a couple restaurants and this one comes highly recommended. In fact
some people say these might be the best fish and chips in the world.
It has arrived and these are maybe the biggest fish from fish and chips that I've ever seen.
But normal fish with fish and chips like you know like maybe that long. Wow. Okay this is like the
entire trout. Yeah it is perfectly breaded and deep fried here. It looks really crunchy and golden.
Oh baby. It's hot freshly fried.
Well that is absolutely delicious. That trout is so freaking flaky in there. Oh my god it just
pulls apart and the breading is just so freaking crunchy. It's perfectly fried. There's a lot of
seasoning in there which is really nice. They put lemon all over it. Who knew Idaho would have
delicious fish and chips you guys. This is so yummy. But how does it rate to England? Alaska?
We've had them in Scotland before. Oh my god. I mean they're all unique to the area right but
the fish is a little thinner. Sometimes we get really big hunks but it's just so nice and tender
in there. It's definitely a top contender. I will say that. And it comes from right over there.
Right outside. Not there. Out there. Past the wall. Into the water. Unsweet tea cheers.
Ding.
Sadly y'all we have not had very good luck with sunlight. We've had a lot of overcast,
rain, snow, all that good stuff. And because of that our batteries have been almost completely
drained. But that's no problem because you guys know that we always travel with an Anker power
station. As you guessed they are once again sponsoring today's video. And they have actually
sent us what is easily the most badass power station we have ever used in our entire lives.
This beast is the Anker Solex F3800 which just launched. It is basically a solar power generator
and like all their products it is just insanely rugged. This thing spins like butter. Probably
not supposed to be sitting on it. But I can handle it. All right you're gonna hurt yourself. Please
stop. This thing is an absolute monster you guys. It's got 6,000 watts of power so you can power a
freaking house with this thing. And of course that means we can power this entire RV with it. All we
have to do is plug it in right here. In a pinch we can actually plug our handy little space heater
directly in so that we don't you know freeze to death. And one thing we love is I mean it just
completely pwns a gas generator which is what we originally had on Clementine that we got rid of.
It doesn't have any nasty smells like a generator does. It runs very very quietly and it is just
stupidly easy to use. Plus it's so dang cute. It looks like a little robot guy. Yeah it does.
You can pick up your own F3800. Just head to Anker.com and you guys know that they have all
these other power stations. They have smaller ones. They have bigger ones. Ones for any kind
of situation you might find yourself in. And not just power stations. They sell individual batteries
that you can expand and plug into this system so you can have you know an obscene amount of power.
All right we're gonna let our little guy here continue to charge our rig while we go out and
continue taking on Idaho. Let's go. We have made it to the famous Shoshone Falls. It might not look
all that grand right now but there are times when this thing is flowing and there's just a pure wall
of water here going nuts. Basically like a tinier version of Niagara Falls I guess. But right now
it's very interesting because you can see all the rock faces. It almost looks a little fake don't
you think? Like it was designed or something. Allison was saying how you kind of get a little
bit of vertigo when you stand up here. You feel like you're just gonna flip right over the edge
or something. You see all this stuff over here? There's a bunch of coins and dollars and hair ties.
Look there's coins out there on that rock out there. I get the coins but not the hair ties.
Yeah there's also a can of bush beer. Come on people.
These falls are on the Snake River which is what we've been kind of following throughout our trip
here in Idaho. The way this river formed was this was a really active lava plain back in the day
and lava was just always spewing out of these little fissures in the ground up until about
2,000 years ago when they finally stopped and then all of those fissures started filling with water
and eventually the Snake River formed I guess. So imagine rivers and waterfalls of lava and not
actual water. I guess this is a lot more conducive to life than lava fields. And of course barely
anyone else is here. I know. Just how we like it. This viewing platform is so neat. It just
juts out on this little rock here so it's like sheer drop-offs on either side. Very cool. Very
terrifying. And I'm sure this gets elbow-to-elbow with people. Oh in the summertime, I'm sure.
We are currently crossing over the Snake River via the Perrine Bridge. Am I saying that right?
Perrine? Your guess is as good as mine. Okay well the bridge is freaking epic. It's this huge steel
archway bridge that goes right across the river and you know what's really interesting? We read
that people actually do base jumping there. It's one of the only spots in the country where you
don't need a permit and you can just freely jump off that bridge and I think they used to do bungee
jumping. I don't know if they do that so much anymore. Would you do it? No! No more bungee
jumping ever. I'm done. Should I cut to the clip of when you went bungee jumping? Three, two, one.
Oh my god! I think I'm dead! I think I'm dead! You're welcome for that. That horrifying terrible
moment in my life. The original bridge was built in 1927 but in the 50s and 60s the bridge kind
of went into disrepair and they didn't really trust it so they built a new bridge. The bridge
that's back there and they finished it I think in the mid 70s. One really interesting tidbit is
that just east of the bridge about a mile east is where back in the 70s Evel Knievel did his famous
jump across the Snake River. Isn't that crazy? He is crazy. Yeah that is crazy. Yeah was crazy. He's
no longer with us. But if you're in the area and you have some time there are hikes all around the
bridge. You can hike the rim of the gorge and there's also a little spot that we'll pinpoint
in the description below right next to the bridge where you can walk along the cliffside. You can
get epic photos and views of the bridge. It is totally worth spending some time there. By the way
what do you guys think of Allison's new jacket? I really like it. Yeah it's a lot of fun. I realized
most everything I own is like black or white. Now I got lots of colors. Oh yeah.
Well y'all the destination we had in mind is somewhere down there but we got to go on this
uh snowy icy muddy road to get there and Ruby kind of stalled out right around here. Well it was my
lack of uh any sort of driving ability. Yeah. I promise the roads have been really nice up until
now. I didn't expect the park to be like so much different than the main roads. There's one special
thing that we want to see before we end this video and it's down there somewhere. We're gonna get to
it. It's only a few miles away. Let's go. The area that we came to today is the City of Rocks and it
is named that because as you approach it you notice all these boulders and cliffs and rock
faces that just rise up out of the ground and it looks like an old city of rock. But this is what
we really wanted to see. Check this out right here. This isn't just your casual 21st century
graffiti. These are from immigrants who actually made their way along the California Trail. This
guy right here, A Freeman, he was coming out here with a friend of his and that friend actually
made the trip three separate times from Illinois all the way out to here. The 50 you see up there
is not 1950. It's 1850. June 12th 1850. Wow. These are people who actually made the journey on the trail
in wagons. Can you freaking believe it? Fun fact, they actually call this registration rock because
so many people stopped here and wrote their names. I guess they used the grease for their wagon wheels
to ride it but you'll find stuff like this all throughout the park because everyone who went out
to California came through here and left their mark. We found a spot to do a little hike but man
you really got to watch where you're stepping. A lot of it's compact but if you make one wrong step
you'll go in like two feet. This is where we're trying to get to. Dang it.
And then suddenly it appeared. The sublime beauty of the city of rocks laid before us.
That was lovely storytelling darling. It is really beautiful though. We found the viewpoint you guys
and it is so cool seeing it all covered in snow but it's not completely blanketed so the rocks
are still peeking through. So far this winter we have been in it you guys. We went through storms,
we went through icy roads, mountain passes, like five, six, seven foot deep snow, snowshoeing. We've
done it all you guys and we're we're tired of it. We're done. We're over it. This is our last snow
adventure. Hopefully. Fingers and toes crossed. But that's right, that's our last winter adventure
and our last adventure in Idaho. We are heading straight south. We're going to Utah where hopefully
spring will have sprung. And ultimately we almost skipped through Idaho because we didn't want to
spend any of the winter up here but I'm glad that we stayed you know. But yeah we're going to chill
here, we're going to take in this view, then we're going to make the walk back and then we're heading
south y'all. That's it. Yeah summer times and tank tops and swimsuits. It's not going to be that warm.
It's going to be like 10 degrees warmer than this. At least there won't be snow dang it. Yeah maybe not.
Goodbye adventure. We'll see you on the road.
