Jay is moving to Edmonton (temporarily) and takes KeVan instead of flying there. On the way he makes some stops for hiking and to see some amazing waterfalls.
I'm going on a business trip to Edmonton and I could just do the normal thing of flying there
and staying in a hotel but that would just be boring so let's turn it into an adventure.
Now this is pretty funny because completely by accident I pulled off in Kamloops and stopped at
the exact same gas station that we stopped at on our first adventure going across the country
and I'll tell you with that big trailer we had an issue getting out of this parking lot
so it is so nice again to have this small little van that just kind of fits anywhere.
Well the rain has let up and I'm a little bit early coming into Kamloops for my next stop
so I figured I'd go for a little walk.
Well that was the perfect little leg stretch after two hours of driving.
Now we're gonna go and check out the Kukuli Cafe Kamloops location. I haven't been there before.
Nice little quick stop at Kukuli. I got a venison bannock and I managed to snag a bag of
ales. Wow I can't believe I drove that entire way without closing our cupboards.
That could have been a disaster. Man we really got to watch that with the van like actually
packing stuff before traveling. I'll tell you my back clothing one is open too. Geez
really gotta remember to close those.
Well my next stop is a little place called Triple Decker Falls. It's just outside of Clearwater
and it's actually not quite in the Wells Gray Provincial Park so I'm hoping I might be able
to get the drone up. And even though it's not a long hike you can see I'm well equipped here.
I've got a compass, a whistle, bear spray, binoculars, toilet paper, so I'm all set.
Now I presume this river trail is going to take me to the big river
but I've been going for quite a ways now and I kind of only faintly hear water. So deep thoughts
in the forest I realized I'm kind of like a dog. I'm always like very eager to go on a walk.
Okay now I can start to see the river through the trees a bit. Getting kind of steep.
Wow this is quite a cliff here. Gee it's a little scary. Oh look there's rafts.
This is very steep. It's going to be quite a journey getting back up but at least I've got
the right footwear this time. Well I'm not sure I want to go all the way back to Clearwater.
Still kind of hoping this is going to take me close to the river. I can really hear it. It's
like right over there but uh it's kind of a little bit steep to get down. Well this looks promising.
River trail to road below old garbage dump. Well that sounds great. Hopefully it'll have
river access at least. Well there's the river. I found it a bit of a ways down.
Maybe this trail will get me somewhere better. It's really flowing. This path is becoming less
and less of a path. I don't know how much further I'm gonna go. All right this is going up into the
again. So I think I'm gonna head back. See if I can get closer to the river but I'd really like
to put the drone up. There's just too many trees though and after crashing my drone into a tree
last weekend I'm a little bit more cautious about the trees. Looks like some nice rapids.
All right I'm gonna give it a shot. Here's my little takeoff and landing pad.
Could be a little tight. There's some trees but I think we'll be good.
Well that worked out well. Didn't lose the drone but now I have to get back to the van
and it's a long way up I feel. I checked and I'm at 1400 feet right now and I feel like I
probably have to go up I don't know maybe a couple hundred feet at least and I'm hungry
but I didn't bring any snacks. That was the one thing I forgot. When you go on a hike bring snacks
don't forget. Well I just checked and we're at 2100 feet now so about a 500 foot elevation gain.
Now I'm really tired and really hungry but this parking lot I'm in is not terribly level
so I'm actually thinking of going on to the next parking lot and maybe cooking some lunch there.
There's a nice fresh lettuce from the garden at home. Always good to have a healthy salad.
So I'm almost at my destination for the night but there's one more hike that looks promising.
The river is so deceivingly calm here. You have no idea what you're in for when you go around
that corner. Well that was cool. Now if you know me I usually have a backup and a backup to a backup.
But for this next spot my backup is simply find a new spot so I hope it's all right.
So it's not the most level spot in the world but I think it'll do for a night and man
pretty nice view. So yeah I mean as long as nobody comes and kicks me out I think it'll
probably do all right. Oh and I did already see a bear that way but it ran off before I could even
get the camera out so sorry no footage. So I used our shovel to dig just a little bit of a hole on
this side just to get slightly more level and it improved it quite a bit. Now I think I'm going to
settle in, download some footage, and hope no one bothers me here. Hope that it's a nice
quiet peaceful spot for the night. Well it's just so nice out. I think I've got to go for a little
walk and don't worry I've got my bear spray on me just in case I have a bit of an encounter.
And sadly we've run out of time this week but I'll be back next week with the rest of my journey.
