We have been looking forward to visiting Valdez, Alaska every since we started planning this trip. We were in Valdez for a little over a week and explored the town a bit, Kayaked a Glacier lake through Valdez Stay and Play, then drove onto the ferry boat to Whittier and then through the famous Whittier tunnel.
We are here in Valdez, Alaska.
I've been here for about a week now.
We're just down here at the pier exploring, walking around the town, trying to find a
place to eat.
We're going kayaking later, which will be really fun.
We're also looking at boats, because I think we're going to buy a boat one of these days,
right?
You're going to have to use my life insurance money.
A salted caramel white mocha.
I got a honey cinnamon latte.
Ah, delicious coffee.
Can you finish yours?
We just saw this iceberg flip over.
We didn't get to record it, but we just saw the top of it just flip up and just water
shoot everywhere.
But it is so blue, it doesn't even look real.
Back.
That was really fun.
It's very unique to be kayaking around icebergs.
And of course, the hike to see the actual glacier was cool.
It was a little cloudy this morning, but it ended up being really sunny, and it was just
a beautiful day.
We're both really tired now, and we're going to find us a place to camp tonight.
Good morning.
It is just after 5am.
We are in a campground in Valdez, and we are going to drive onto a ferry boat this morning
and go to Whittier.
We're both very tired, but very awake.
So we've got to be there in about 10 minutes, so we're going to get going.
Valdez Ferry Terminal.
Well, we got through the check-in process extremely easy.
Just had to give them our driver's license, and they gave us this thing, and I think these
are the boarding tickets for us.
And then this sticker we put on the window.
Since we are already in Alaska, they don't ask you for passports.
Unless if you're probably Canadian, I would say, or from another country, but they didn't
ask us for those, and they didn't ask us for Ollie's vaccination records because we're
not crossing a border, so that's not really a concern right now.
But yeah, now I guess we just wait.
I knew this was going to happen.
It's 546 right now.
The boat departs at 7am, so we're probably going to sit here.
I'm going to assume for a while, so if you want to jump back in bed and go to sleep,
you go for it.
Being here in Alaska has messed up our sleeping, and not even 6 o'clock, and the sun has been
out for hours.
Now we wait.
So to give you an idea of kind of where we are and where we're going, we are here in
Valdez.
So if we wanted to drive to Anchorage instead of take the ferry boat, this is the route
it would take us.
Obviously, we're going from here straight over here.
We're still waiting.
The line is filling up though, or this little parking lot here is filling up pretty good
too.
So I think everybody's pretty much here.
It doesn't look like anybody else is coming through.
It looks like most of us are RVs, and then there's like three, there's a spot over here
for campers.
Hopefully we can get boarded soon.
We're going to try to get you as far over this way as we can.
Perfect.
We are officially on board.
We're kind of towards the front, so we'll be one of the first ones out probably.
But we are jam packed in here.
I don't even know if...
Hey, you can open your door.
Got our bag, because I don't know.
I'm not sure if we can come back down here and like check on our vehicles or be in our
vehicles.
Ollie has to stay behind, which he would rather be down here anyway.
He's nice and comfortable.
So he already knows.
You're going to be here, and you're going to stay here and be good.
But yeah, in case we can't come back down here for the whole five hour trip, we're going
to bring a bag of some snacks and water and our laptop so we can do some work.
It's tight.
Finally moving.
We're about 20 minutes behind schedule I think, but I almost didn't even notice it.
It is nap time.
Yeah.
So we made it to Whittier.
It is a very tiny town.
I don't think we're actually going to stay here and do anything.
We just parked on the side of the road just outside of the tunnel that leads out of town
right across the street from the cruise ship.
Yeah, we just made some lunch, and I think we're just going to go through the tunnel
next and to our campsite from here.
So there's quite a bit of people in line right now.
Several buses, like big buses, and then a bunch of campers and RVs.
We have our own lane.
Lane four.
So the next time they're going to open it from this side, it says two o'clock.
So there's so many people here.
I'm curious if they're going to let us all through at once or if they're going to do
like a little out of time.
Actually, it looks like they're opening the gate right now.
This will be interesting.
It's a two and a half mile tunnel.
I think you can only go 25 miles an hour, so it's probably going to take us like five
or six minutes to get through.
So it probably is going to be a little eerie.
So we got a spot.
The first spot we looked at was by a lake.
There's just too many people there.
This second spot has a lake and it's like we kind of backed up to it.
It's like our own private little sitting area.
This will be nice to stay here for the next one to two nights maybe.
So we'll enjoy it as much as we can.
Well, that has been our day so far.
Just going to sleep probably the rest of the afternoon and watch TV and just relax.
