I tried to join the US Marine Corp *Insane experience*

Marines Life

This is marine martial arts. Something I never thought I would get to try.
I have said this a lot lately but this is the craziest experience of my life.
Getting to hang out with a hand-selected group of some of the fittest US marines.
Learning how they train and fight to stay alive in real-life scenarios.
And their never-quit mentality.
And to top things off, shallow water grappling.
As if normal grappling wasn't hard enough,
the point of this exercise is basically to drown the opponent.
Or get drowned yourself.
All right, good morning Magnus. My name is Gunnery Sergeant Freddy Torres.
It's an honor and privilege to have you here.
This morning we're going to be running the obstacle course here on Camp Pendleton.
Yeah.
So we got the old course. I got a bunch of marines, martial arts instructors
that are currently in the fleet that are going to execute this obstacle course with us.
Is this the only thing we're going to do today?
No, so after this we're going to make movement.
It's about a half a mile movement down to the beach.
Yeah.
It's called a shamrock drill.
Every single one of these marines have gone through a shamrock drill.
And then once we're done with that drill,
then we're going to do a little bit of grappling in the ocean.
It sounds like it's going to be a tough day in the burning sun.
Yeah, it's good weather.
Yeah.
So there's a certain way of doing this, I guess, right?
There is.
There's a technique to it.
Yes.
As always.
We do a demonstration every time.
I have Staff Sergeant Bicknell and Staff Sergeant Chavez
that are going to demonstrate for us.
Yeah.
So for this one we have two methods.
We do two different techniques.
One's called the college boy.
The second technique is going to be we call the chicken wing.
You're going to come up, pull himself up, put his armpit over,
throw his leg out.
Once you get to the multiple logs and you have two ways to do this one,
you use the double log or you're just one foot in front of another.
Getting to the highest log of the obstacle,
this one you want to put your hips onto the log,
bear hug the log and roll yourself over on it
and coming down, easing down on your knees.
Yeah.
So there's only one technique for this one.
Moving your way down.
Running to the next obstacle is the high wall.
So this one's all about momentum.
We have Marines that are super short and are still able to execute it.
Putting your hips on the top of the wall.
And you grab around the whole thing.
Grab around over, yes.
Using your triceps, maneuvering through the high wall.
Right.
And then this one, Marines have trouble with it too.
It's all about momentum.
Getting both legs over the bars, body and then putting your leg down.
So you can spin either way.
Yes.
And then the last portion of the obstacle course is the ropes.
He's going to step on the rope, cross it over in front of his boot laces,
step on it, hand over hand, take his knees to his elbows,
all the way to the top.
You touch the metal ring on top.
Metal ring.
Okay.
And what is it that you're wearing?
How heavy is it?
So this one here, it's just called our plate carrier.
I'm wearing sappies inside, protective sappies.
They're probably about 20 pounds altogether.
This whole thing's probably about 25 pounds and it's slick.
What should I aim for?
What kind of pace?
Do you just go all out?
Just go all out.
I should save some for the martial arts though, right?
Because that's really going to take everything out of me.
It is.
Nice.
How do I look?
Try to plan a little bit, I guess.
Look at the different techniques and strategies.
And is it one versus one in the water?
Different size.
We'll pair you up with the largest guys.
We'll mix and match so you can kind of get a taste of everyone here.
Me against David in the water.
So I'm going to go against you on the obstacle course, right?
Yes.
And you have some climbing background, I've heard.
I do.
I've been watching your videos for a while.
Oh, really?
Nice.
All right, Magnus.
That's our challenge.
Here we go.
Ready, set, go.
Go, go, go.
Here we go.
Hand on your head, hand on your head.
Good job.
Oh, you smoked me.
It's the technique.
Yeah.
One minute, 11 seconds.
That was quick.
Kind of wanted to do it again, but I don't really want to do it again.
The logs kind of held you up.
The high log?
Yeah, the high log.
I missed it.
I fell down.
I had to do it again.
Yeah, if you miss one small thing, it carries through the rest.
Yeah.
And my rope technique was like terrible too.
Apart from that, I think it was pretty good.
It was very quick.
Yeah.
Impressive.
Well, this was just a warm-up though, right?
It was.
We have four more times to do it.
And then we got some grappling and we got some training down the road.
We're not going to do it four times.
No, no, I'm just joking.
Yeah.
Well, we're going to do the grappling.
That's no joke.
We're going to grapple in the water and that sounds brutal.
And it's shark infested too, I've heard.
A little bit.
Just a little bit.
The waves are pretty brutal down there too.
So you'll think you got somebody and the wave will knock you over.
Now that we finished the whole course, we're going to make movement down to the beach.
We're going to run on the street.
We call them, just call them a twos.
It's about half a mile movement down there.
Okay.
So we even have to run down to the beach.
Oh yeah.
Yeah, we do this right after, right back to back.
We do it.
I'm out of breath.
But this is like nothing though, compared to what I'm about to do.
Like it's such a privilege to be here.
I never thought I would be able to do this stuff.
And now I'm here at an American military base, training with the Marines.
It's crazy.
Now that we've gotten to the beach, this is where we'll do our,
what we call our shamrock drill.
Yeah.
We have eight stations.
Right.
Eight exercises as buddies.
We'll do it right over here on the beach.
It's all fighting.
Ah, the fighting portion comes after.
Okay.
After the drill.
So first you're going to tire us out and then it's a fight.
Yeah, well, I got to tell you, I can't have you beating us on camera.
So how physically demanding would you say it is to get into the Marine Corps,
like to do what you guys do?
So I would say it is pretty physically demanding across all branches.
We do have the highest standard when it comes to physical fitness.
Okay.
We do have the hardest physical fitness test.
Oh wow.
The longest run, the most pull-ups, most crunches.
When it comes to physical fitness, we are the highest branch.
Wow.
When it comes to the standard.
These are the most picked guys.
These are hand-picked, the most fit Marines that we could put together today.
So this is how we train here.
Put your body through something in case you ever have to go through it in a combat situation.
Wow.
So the point of this is just to go, to not quit basically.
Yeah.
See how much your body can go through.
Your body can go through a lot.
Yeah, I know.
You just have to tell it to shut up and hit.
Yeah, good.
I'll try to do that.
Lean back and he's going to drag them to station two.
Left, right, squat, strongman grip.
So he's going to wrap them around right below the hip, pick them up,
and move them transitioning to the next station.
Once he gets here, he's going to conduct a push kick.
Protecting his face at all times, pushing the opponent back.
Six points of contact.
You see the elbows, you see the knees,
and you see the toes making contact with the ground.
As soon as he gets to the next station, he's going to quickly transition into pushups.
He's already on the ground.
He's going to do 10 of them.
High crawl from this station.
10 uppercuts.
One, two, three, ten.
Inchworm, taking your toes all the way to your wrist,
bringing them in as far as possible, extending your palms out.
Back straight, ass out, head up, after the grasp.
Once he gets to the next station, the technique he's going to be conducting
for martial arts is going to be the round kick.
Protecting his face.
Once he gets to the last station here, the exercise is going to be a burpee.
All the way down, push, up, run out to the outskirt,
and you're going to conduct a fireman's carry.
Fireman's carry comes from the combat fitness test.
Support his lower back, run to the first weapon of opportunity,
which is the black stick hanging out.
And that concludes one round.
Oh, man.
You're just getting started.
Yeah.
Is this about time?
Well, yes, it's about time.
Just as quickly as you can.
Okay.
But you want to perform it well, though.
It's all about the technique.
Performing the technique the right way.
Right.
And injury prevention, not doing something that's going to
throw out your back with the squat or anything like that.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Be good!
Three loud loud partners!
Oh, sorry.
Ten.
Let's go!
Bring it to the back!
Drag him!
Let's go!
Triple threads!
Fireman transition!
Let's go.
Start round three again.
Come on, right to my voice!
Right to my voice!
Let's go!
I pretend you're doing high crawls!
High crawls!
Get ready to low crawl!
Let's get power behind those upper cuts!
High crawl!
High crawl, Marie!
High crawl!
Round ten!
Round kick!
Your body should be getting blown away from a kick!
Let's go!
Come on, Rodriguez!
Come on, you can rest when you're dead.
Let's go!
Come on!
Let's get some items!
Three transitions!
And make movement!
Sprint back!
Run, Julio!
Run!
That seemed extremely hard.
The sand makes it worse.
Yeah, so I called five to seven minutes,
where that was six minutes, eleven seconds.
Can you beat them?
I don't think I can, to be honest.
Six minutes.
I think it also depends on the form.
Yeah, the technique.
The technique and how well you perform.
My legs, it's not my strong suit, you know?
So I think that's where you feel it the most, right?
Legs.
Quads.
Yeah.
I feel like each time I do collaborations with any military,
it just gets worse and worse and worse.
And I think this is going to be the worst thing I've ever done.
This and then the fighting afterwards.
Especially in the heat, the sand, the water.
It makes everything so much more difficult.
Yeah, these guys are like the fittest of the fittest.
They're badass.
Yeah, they're really badass.
I'm not so badass.
I'm trying to be.
And we're in with a body drag to your next transition.
Three, two, one, begin.
All right, man, this is all you.
This time is all on you, all right?
Let's go.
Harder, harder, let's go.
Harder, harder, harder.
Ten, let's go.
Transition, transition.
Body drag, body drag, body drag.
Straight back, straight back, straight back.
Come on, let's go.
Right here, right here.
I got you, right here.
Ready, stop.
All right, next exercise, let's go.
There we go, there we go.
Regular squat, left, there we go.
Right, two, let's go.
Here we go, come on, let's go.
One, all on you, as you finish, you get to rest.
All right, let's go.
One more, one more, one more all the way through.
Here we go, last one.
Ten, ten.
There we go, pick them up.
Let's go.
One, ready, drop, drop, drop.
Put them down, push kick, push kick, push kick.
Push them away.
Kick them back, kick them back.
Let's go.
Kick them back, get them back there.
Push them over, let's go, Madden.
Let's go, let's go, let's go.
Push them over.
Let's go one more, come on, let's go.
Let's go, let's go.
Let's go, Madden.
Come on, let's go.
All the way through, let's go.
Let's go, let's go, let's go.
Push up, push up.
Four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten.
Up, let's go.
Let's go all the way through.
Let's go, let's go.
Uppercuts, uppercuts, uppercuts.
Harder, harder, harder.
Let's go, let's go.
One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight.
Harder.
Good job, just like that, good form, good form.
Come on, let's go, let's go, let's go.
Keep going, you got it.
Don't give up, don't give up.
How bad do you want this?
Let's go, let's go.
Right here, right here, right here.
Right here, right here, right here, right here.
Squat, squat, just squat.
Squat, squat, two, three, four, good.
Five, six, seven, eight, nine.
Last one, ten, let's go.
Let's go, come on, let's go, let's go.
Follow the champions, follow the champions.
Let's go, let's go.
Come on, there we go, there we go.
That's what I'm talking about.
Just like that, just like that, Mandis.
Just like that, Mandis.
Let's go, let's go, let's go.
Come on, Mandis, let's go.
Almost there, all the way through.
Let's go, let's go, let's go, let's go.
Whoa, there we go, Mandis.
Keep your hands up, Mandis, stick your feet.
There you go, let's go.
Three, let's go, come on.
Yeah, four, yeah.
Hit it.
Five, let's go.
Six, four minutes, let's go.
Seven, let's go, Mandis, come on.
Let's go.
Nine, one more, one more, let's go.
Ten, let's go.
Come on, Mandis, let's go.
Ten burpees, let's go, come on.
Almost there, you're almost done.
Two more jumps.
One more jump, one more jump.
Right here, right here.
Boom, there we go, ten burpees.
Ten of them, let's go.
Ten burpees, let's go, come on, let's go.
Now, come on, let's go, Mandis.
Four, let's go.
Ten, come on, here we go.
Five, yeah, let's go, Mandis, come on.
Get down.
Here we go, here we go.
Here we go, down one more, come on.
Here we go, we're at seven, all right?
Seven, here we go, down.
Yeah, here we go.
Eight, down.
Yeah, nine, one more.
Yeah, come on, let's go.
Let's go, run, run, run, run, run.
Almost there, almost there, almost there, let's go.
Come on, right there, right there.
CFC, let's go, let's go, let's go.
Move, move, move, let's go.
You can beat us, time, let's go.
This is what you asked for, let's go.
Let's go, let's go, run.
How bad do you want this?
Right here, put him down.
How bad do you want this?
Put him down and just go all the way back.
Put him down.
Three, three, let's go.
Come on, Mandis, come on.
All the way through, let's go.
Under six, let's go, let's go.
That's all I do, all I do, all I do, all I do.
There we go, good job.
Yeah.
557, time.
I swallowed so much sand.
He tries to take deep breaths and there's nothing but sand.
Because your mouth is so close to the sand.
You're a good partner, though.
Yeah, bundle it tight.
That's what sometimes you need.
You need a good training partner to be able to-
Push you through.
Kind of what Gunitore was saying, right?
It's the motivation of the people around you that keeps you going.
More than it is just like your own mental discipline and drive.
Yeah, and like the technique just went like this.
Your push kicks are pretty strong.
Those are very consistent.
Your round kicks are slightly dying off at the end.
The last two, maybe.
And then your burpees, I'm sure you could tell your burpees are-
Yeah, yeah, sloppy.
Really slow at the end.
But you pushed through.
Fireman carry was impressive.
You made it all the way through.
Everyone here brings something to the table.
More of a runner, calisthenics type of guy.
I have a couple boxers, a couple jiu-jitsu guys here.
We pride ourselves on our physical fitness.
That's one of the things that separates us from all the other branches.
And what are we doing now?
The next portion is going to be the grappling and the water.
So you have three of those, what's that?
Three, yes.
And it's a black belt?
Yes.
In order to get the first red stripe,
you'll need to belt up to the level of black belt in the first place.
How long have you been doing this for?
Eight years.
Eight years, wow.
Yes.
My primary specialty is cyber security.
Okay.
So I do that on a full time.
This is kind of what I do, you know, kind of embody the Marine Corps spirit.
Yeah, yeah.
And then on my recreational time, I do photography and I also do rock climbing.
You're multi-talented.
Absolutely.
You better win.
Break, break, break, break, break.
Winner.
Loser.
Winner to the left.
Right here, two right here.
On your knees, on your knees.
On your knees.
On your knees, face each other.
Clap it up.
Shake hands.
Here we go guys, just take it down.
Get us out of the water, let's go.
Stay on your knees.
Dominant position.
Break, break, break, break.
Winner.
Loser.
Winner to the left.
Dominant position.
There's a wave, get us out of the water.
Dominant position.
Get them over.
There you go, throw them over.
Yeah, we're good, you guys.
Don't get set underwater.
Get up, get in.
Slip out of it.
There you go.
There comes the wave.
Now push up.
Push up.
Break, break, break, break, break, break.
Loser.
Winner.
Break, break, break.
Position.
Shake it off, go.
Begin.
Who has the GoPro?
I'm going to go against the instructor now.
I'm going to put a GoPro on my head.
And that guy looks big.
Really big.
You had me and it was like,
it was like, oh, I gave you almost everything I had.
That was good.
You got me.
Yeah, thank you.
Royce, thank you.
Thank you for going easy on me.
Ah, what did you say?
I was going easy?
I was trying.
You almost choked me out too.
Yeah.
Y'all see that?
He had me.
I was like, damn.
I was watching.
I kept telling him a couple of times.
I was like, ah.
Yeah, I know.
I can tell.
You're still fighting.
There was one time I got my head dunked.
I couldn't see.
But I felt his hands.
That was fun.
Magnus, thank you for the opportunity,
getting us out of work for half a day.
I know the Marines truly appreciate it.
On behalf of us, we have a tradition in the Marine Corps.
When we come across somebody we truly care
or made an impact on us,
we give them and present them with a challenge coin.
So on behalf of myself and all these Marines here,
thank you.
We appreciate you.
And hopefully you enjoyed and had a good time with us.
Wow, thank you.
Look at this.
It's beautiful.
Thank you so much.
I mean, it's been an honor to be with you.
I only did it for half a day.
And I'm exhausted.
I'm going to go to bed now and never do this again.
But thank you so much.
