Really looking forward to this start from Cater Montero after what he did.
Remember, he was an opener in Miami.
He was going to go one, maybe two, maybe three, oh wait, maybe four, maybe five, because he
was so efficient and A.J. just loved the stuff.
And Jerickson Profar leads things off for Atlanta.
This one pops up, third base side, drifting into the outfield as the third baseman, Andy
Ibanez, he's under it, it's hanging up there a long time, he'll make the catch.
He misses with all four pitches to Matt Olson.
Now he faces fellow Venezuelan Ronald Acuna.
Nice slider, wipes out Acuna Jr.
That's exactly what you're talking about.
It can be sharp in a swing and miss pitch.
And he continues for Drake Baldwin.
Curveball, finishes off the lefty Baldwin.
Nice bounce back, four pitch walk to Olson.
Strikeouts out of Acuna, the righty, Baldwin the lefty.
So Joey Wentz getting the start, remember former Tiger, he debuted with them in May
of 22, was here for parts of three seasons, and now he is back at Comerica Park.
Joey Wentz faces Jemiah Jones.
Have a good start for Joey Wentz, a slider, down goes Jemiah Jones.
Here's Glaber Torres, two hit day for Glaber last night.
Face it into center field, see if that starts something here in the first.
Glaber's got his third hit of the series, and the Tigers have their first base runner
of the game.
Now Wenzel Perez.
That's a wild pitch.
And on a wild pitch, Glaber Torres gets into scoring position.
Got it by him.
So he course corrects, throws the fastball, Perez is down on strikes.
Two gone first inning, Spencer Torkelson, he swings to the first pitch, sends it in
the air to center.
This one's sinking, and it falls into no man's land for an RBI single, as Glaber Torres scores
from second base, and it's one nothing Tigers in the first.
That's a great start for the Tigers right there, taking advantage of the wild pitch.
A strikeout by Perez, and then that RBI single by Torkelson, and now Green goes down on strikes.
It's one to nothing after one.
Last five road series for Ozzie Albies, over a 1,000 OPS.
Diving, stopped by Tork, perfect feed, got him.
Looks like Tork came to play today.
RBI knock in the bottom of the first.
Beautiful backhand dive, perfect feed, Decatur Montero on the run.
You can't teach that one, Dan.
Not many first basemen can throw that with touch like that.
Joey Wentz, back to work.
He's feeling good, even though he gave up the run in the first.
All four outs for Joey Wentz have been via the strikeout, and all four swinging.
One down for Dylan Dingler.
Five outs, five strikeouts for Joey Wentz.
Another one on the fourth seam, fastball.
That's three straight on the heater.
Two away from Meadows, had a triple in last night's ballgame.
Not a strikeout, but it should be the third out of the inning.
And Wentz sets his former team down in order in the second.
Nacho Alvarez climbing in, just missed a homer last night.
Two-two, and Nacho with a high fly ball, deep left field, back to the wall.
That continues to go, and that is gone.
First Major League home run for Nacho Alvarez,
and he hits it down the left field line here in Detroit.
Game is tied at one here in the third.
He waited a long time for it.
Savor it, young man.
Smiles all the way around, and a silent treatment for Nacho Alvarez.
Come on, man.
I just hit my first big league homer.
Now the celebration is on.
He hugged Marcel Lozuna first, and then everybody came.
Ah, that's awesome.
And Acuna takes ball four.
All the Tigers were taking steps to the dugout,
thinking that was strike three.
And here's the D.H. Baldwin.
Drake Baldwin does put it in play.
Pretty deep out to right center.
Another two-strike homer for Drake Baldwin,
and this one puts Atlanta in the driver's seat.
Good gracious, right on time here.
Two-strike count. Look at the location.
That is out of the strike zone on that breaking ball,
and that is not an easy place to hit a home run in this ballpark.
He just continues to impress.
Does Drake Baldwin make it now ten home runs with two strikes?
One out for Jemai Jones.
Went down on strikes in the first.
Line drive into left.
A base hit for Jemai Jones.
Now Glaber-Torres.
He singled and scored in the first inning.
Jones takes off.
That's into center field, and Jones has screwed over to third.
1,000th career hit for Glaber-Torres.
That's a good feeling. Big smile on his face.
He's added so much to this Tigers lineup.
Grab that baseball. Put it on the mantel.
1,000 major league hits.
Tigers have the tying run on base
here in the third inning for Wenzel Perez.
Deep but playable.
That will make it a 3-2 game.
Jones will trot home.
Sacrifice fly for Wenzel Perez.
Tigers cut the Braves lead to 3-2.
Good swing. Here's Jemai Jones.
Shot to third, and then a goal for Valveres in the left.
All or nothing play, but another bullet off the bat.
Jemai Jones.
Two hits for Jones,
and also the man coming to the plate now, Torres, with two hits.
Base hit in the left center.
Jones will make the big turn and hole.
Two on, one out on the fifth.
The Tigers have the tying run
and scoring position for Wenzel Perez.
Struck him out, and a big strikeout
as the crowd's starting to get into it here in Detroit.
It's a great pitch. It's a slider and a 3-2 count.
You got an aggressive hitter in Perez,
and that is well located.
And he walked him on four straight sliders down and in.
Tigers have the bases loaded for Riley Green.
0-1 is lifted out to left.
Profar coming in, and Joey Wentz gets out of it.
Threw five with a 3-2 lead.
See Zach McKinstry coming in as a pinch hitter.
See if he can get the barrel to him.
In the air to left, deep.
Profar back, looking in.
Zach McKinstry pinch hit home run.
We're tied at three.
Boy, that just platoon baseball
that A.J. Hinch just plays perfectly.
Calls on Zach McKinstry,
who gets a cutter out over the plate,
and smoked that ball right in between the two bullpens
out in left-center field to tie this game up.
And Jemai Jones, that nicely, the plate will lead off.
Hooked to left, past a diving Kim.
Jemai Jones, a three-hit day.
Six hits between the top two spots in this Tiger lineup.
Brian Snitger out.
It's bullpen time for the Braves,
with Spencer Torkelson coming to the plate.
We're tied up, 3-3, two out in the bottom of the seventh.
For Pierce Johnson, game number 62.
He has had a really good year, 56 in a third inning,
so it's a .220 combined batting average again.
Torkelson to bat, two outs, seventh inning.
Runner on first.
High flock, high ball, take the lead, and a seven.
That's exactly where Spencer Torkelson wanted that.
He knew he was going to get a curveball three and two.
That's what Pierce Johnson throws the most.
He got it, and that one was hanging
on the inner third part of the plate.
Just bring it down just enough.
He was skirting the high part of the strike zone
on the previous pitches.
Brought it down enough, and Torkelson did not miss it.
Oh, this place has come unglued
as the Tigers lead 5-3 on the Torkelson.
New pitcher, Kyle Finnegan.
He's been good as a Tiger, 12 games.
He has not allowed a run.
He's actually also picked up three wins out of the bullpen.
Also, his last two outings with the Nationals,
he did not allow a run, so it's been 14 straight,
and what a great time for that to end.
He faces the man who hit his first big-league homer
back in the third inning.
Nacho Alvarez deep to left, and that ball is out of here.
On the day when he hits his first big-league homer,
he also hits his second big-league homer.
Well, Nacho Alvarez doesn't always hit home runs,
but when he hits home runs, he hits two home runs.
Do it, Nacho.
Inside ball four, and so a two-out walk
keeps the inning alive now for Drake Baldwin.
Two down, two-two pitch. Acuna takes off.
Safe.
Now Baez pointed right at the dugout
and wants Detroit to take a look.
I mean, Dylan threw a bullet down there,
and Javi did one of his notorious.
He got the foot. No-look tag.
How do you miss the bag? He missed the bag.
Acuna slid to the right of the bag,
and that's why Javi, it's the only Javi can do.
Got the foot.
That's going to get some of this.
Every time you think New York can't possibly mess it up.
That's tough. That's a tough break.
So now a base hit ties it three and two.
The count on Baldwin. Swing and a ground ball.
Deep in the hole at second.
Picked and shallow right by Glaber Torres.
He spins and throws out.
Drake Baldwin to retire the side.
Braves strand the tying run in scoring position.
We go to the bottom of the eighth.
Tigers five, Braves four.
Sixty-first appearance of the year for Will Vest.
Comes in six and four, 291 ERA.
He has saved 21 of 27 ballgames.
Line drive. Base hit.
Tying run is at first base.
And the go-ahead run, and Ha-Sung Kim comes up to the plate.
Ha-Sung Kim drops this out into right center.
Two on, nobody out.
You pair that comeback stat up with the Tigers
being 75 and 0 this season after leading after eight.
This would be quite a comeback.
Here is Michael Harris.
Got him. That's how you do it.
You set him up. You get him in swing mode on the fastball
to throw that nasty back foot slider.
Now your double play candidate comes up, Dan.
Get the strikeout. Get the double play.
Happy days. Got him.
Big-time pitches from Will Vest,
and that's going to leave it up to Nacho Alvarez,
who has a couple home runs.
The story, the script just keeps scripting.
He's got two home runs.
His first two home runs in the big leagues in this game.
Now an 0-2 to Nacho.
It gets away from Degler.
Ozzie's going to get to third.
Kim stays at first.
But now that tying run's 90 feet away.
Can it get any more intense?
And the drama build to Motel.
Line drive. Base hit.
It is Nacho's day here in Detroit,
and this ballgame is tied at five.
I mean, that's a swing and miss pitch all day.
At best, a foul ball.
That's a guy who's swung and missed a lot
on his way to the major leagues.
What a day.
Two homers and a two-out RBI single in the ninth.
And Jurek's Profar comes to the plate
with a go-ahead run at second base.
Got to keep it here.
Ground ball through the right side.
Kim's coming around third.
Throw to the plate is off target.
And Atlanta has scored two in the ninth
to grab the lead and stun 35,000 in Detroit.
If it braves in the ninth,
two straight hits on one-two pitches.
Four hits off Will Vest.
Nine in his last two appearances.
Jemai Jones, he will be lifted for Kerry Carpenter.
Jemai, three singles and two runs scored today.
Shot caught.
Two outs.
Well, this is a bummer.
Line drive right at Matt Olsen.
So now it's up to Glaber Torres to keep the game alive.
Out to right.
Acuna is there.
The ballgame is over.
A comeback win for Atlanta.
They take the first two of this series.
Seven-game win streak for the Braves.
Longest since 2023.
Yeah, baseball is a humbling game, Dan.
It gives and it takes.
And sometimes it can get really dreary.
This was a tough one.
This is a heartbreaker.
