Hello everyone! Today we're doing a classic grammar lesson and we're looking at the topic of prepositions and blenders,
which actually causes the most difficulties for most German learners.
And if you're one of them, feel free to watch this video until the end.
And so that you can understand the explanation better and, of course, also learn more effectively,
we have also prepared a free summary as a PDF file for you.
You can download this very easily via the link in the video description,
as well as your e-mail address for free.
We're going to do the following now.
I'll give you a sentence and you should correct a mistake and also come up with an explanation.
So,
In summer we always go to Turkey.
You now have 10 seconds.
So, what mistake do we have here?
We shouldn't use NACH here, but IN DIE TÜRKEI.
Why?
You probably know that most countries in German are neuter.
So, DAS.
And they are also used without articles.
For example, Germany, France, Poland.
I say, we're going to Germany.
Or, we're going to Poland.
But there are certain countries that always have an article.
For example, which are also feminine.
Like Turkey.
Or also Mongolia.
Ukraine.
Slovakia.
The Dominican Republic.
Or Switzerland.
That's the least you should know.
These countries are feminine and are always used with an article.
And that's why we don't use the preposition NACH when we describe a direction, but IN.
So, we always go to Turkey in summer.
Why actually DIE and not, for example, DER?
Because we describe a direction.
So, the question WOHIN?
And WOHIN is a question from the accusative.
That's why we use DIE.
IN DIE TÜRKEI.
So, with countries that are used with an article, you can never use the preposition NACH.
Let's look at another sentence.
My sister has been studying in the Netherlands for two years.
What's wrong here?
Think about it.
And here the preposition is actually correct.
IN.
But the correct formulation would be IN DEN Niederlanden.
Why?
There are countries in Germany that don't just use an article, like Turkey, but also plural.
And you should know these.
For example, DIE USA.
DIE Niederlande.
DIE Vereinigten Arabischen Emirate.
These are the most important ones.
And here you should be careful.
She studies WHERE?
So, that's the question from the dative.
So, we don't say IN DIE Niederlande.
That's wrong.
So, the plural.
So, IN DEN Niederlanden.
And it's very, very important to remember that we don't use IN DER or without an article,
but IN DEN Niederlanden, because it's plural.
Let's look at another sentence.
Think about it for a second.
What could be wrong here?
So, it would be correct.
Why?
We've already discussed that.
There are countries that always use the plural and always have an article.
And the USA is one of them.
So, that's really a very typical mistake with the USA.
Please remember that.
DIE USA.
And here we describe a direction again.
And you know, with countries with an article, we don't use a preposition NACH, but IN.
So, IN DIE USA.
Accusative.
Let's take another example sentence.
What could be wrong here?
And it would be correct.
Why?
In fact, Mallorca is an island.
And with islands we usually use, not always usually, the preposition AUF.
For example, AUF Mallorca, AUF Sylt, AUF Gran Canaria, AUF Tenerife, AUF Hawaii.
So, if you see an island, you should usually use the preposition AUF and not an article.
That's why AUF Mallorca.
Doesn't matter if it's accusative or dative.
Let's take another typical mistake.
We were in Lebanon with my family for three weeks.
What could be wrong here?
In fact, it's correct.
Why?
We said that there are countries in Germany that always use an article.
For example, they are always feminine, like Ukraine.
Or they are always plural, like the USA.
Or they are masculine.
And this includes, for example, Lebanon.
There are also a few others, like Iraq, or Sudan, or Oman, the Vatican.
So there are a few, and you should definitely know them.
Because we always use them with this article.
And that's why, when we describe a direction, we don't use the preposition NACH, but IN.
And the article DEN.
Because DEN becomes DEN in the accusative case.
So, for example, we will soon be traveling to DEN Lebanon.
But we have been there for three weeks.
Where?
In DEN Lebanon, or in plus DEM equals M.
So, remember that very well.
That's actually a typical mistake.
And last but not least, we will take a sentence that my student used in the language club.
And that is, I have been living in Switzerland for 10 years.
What is wrong here?
So, it would be correct, I have been living in Switzerland for 10 years.
And this question, or this sentence, is related to our first example sentence.
So there are countries that are feminine and are always used with an article.
And that includes the Switzerland.
So you always need an article with this country.
So either DIE or DER, depending on whether you use accusative or dative.
And look, here we ask the question, where?
So a question from the dative.
Where have I been living for 10 years?
Therefore, DIE becomes DER in the dative.
So in DER Schweiz.
Today, of course, we will only deal with a very small part of this topic, prepositions.
This topic is really very extensive, diverse and difficult in German.
