Keanu Reeves Heartbreaking True Story
Although Keanu translates to a cool breeze, his life has been much more turbulent.
It's said the strongest hearts have the most scars.
But the story of Keanu Reeves would make even the strongest men stumble.
Born September 2nd, 1964, a son of Patricia and Samuel Reeves, Keanu grew up in Toronto,
the largest city in Canada.
Before he was three years old, Keanu's father abandoned the family.
Samuel Reeves developed an out-of-control drug problem that would culminate in a ten-year
prison sentence for importing heroin.
These events undoubtedly strengthened the bonds between mother and son.
Perhaps where a young Keanu, described in his youth as excruciatingly shy, inherited
his sensitivity and an unwavering commitment to protect the vulnerable.
The family moved around a lot, trying to make the most of meager resources, briefly living
in Sydney, Australia and even New York before settling in Toronto, Canada.
Patricia would be married a total of four times.
Despite the unpredictable nature of his upbringing, Keanu was a talented hockey goalkeeper in
his youth, and considered training for the Olympics before fully committing to pursue
acting when he was 15 years old.
Keanu attended four different high schools in five years, one of which Keanu was expelled
from for, in his words, being too rambunctious.
Because I had trouble reading, I wasn't a good student, I didn't finish high school,
I did a lot of pretending as a child, it was my way of coping with the fact that I didn't
really feel like I fit in.
He dropped out of high school at 17 and never received his high school diploma.
Three years later, at age 20, he moved to LA, taking the plunge to follow his dream
and become an actor.
Keanu got his first gig on a TV sitcom called Hanging In, but it wouldn't be for another
two years until Keanu got his first film role in Youngblood.
It was on the set of Youngblood that Keanu met one of his closest friends, River Phoenix.
Despite his shyness, Keanu put himself out there, gaining attention in films like Point
Break and Dangerous Liaisons for his unassuming good looks and mysterious nature.
Just as Keanu's career began to gain traction, one of the people closest to him, his sister,
Kim Reeves, was diagnosed with leukemia.
Less than two years later, his best friend River Phoenix, brother to Joaquin Phoenix,
died from a drug overdose when River collapsed on the sidewalk outside West Hollywood nightclub
The Viper Room.
River Phoenix was only 23 years old at the time.
On Christmas Eve 1999, while Reeves was filming The Matrix, his partner Jennifer Simm gave
birth to their first child, Ava Reeves.
Heartbreakingly, Ava did not survive childbirth.
The grief that followed put such a strain on their relationship that the couple broke
up a few weeks later.
They remained close, however, but Keanu was struck down again when less than 18 months
later, his partner Jennifer was killed in a violent car accident.
Jennifer crashed into three parked cars at high speed and was killed instantly.
Jennifer Simm was only 28 years old at the time.
Since then, Keanu has avoided serious relationships and the possibility of having children.
Perhaps losing two people so close to him in such circumstances added to the distrust
Keanu had for his own father, whom he never forgave for leaving.
Sam Reeves died in 2018 and Keanu chose not to attend his funeral.
The years rolled by as Keanu fought a furious battle against the leukemia that tried to
claim his sister.
He was her rock and became an incredible advocate for a leukemia cure and against all cancer
in general, donating millions.
During these years, Keanu lived mostly in hotels and lived a withdrawn life, rarely
leaving his room.
He was spotted catching the subway with a large beard and an old cap, seemingly unfazed
by the luxuries others so adored.
Keanu gained worldwide fame and recognition after The Matrix became a smash hit.
When The Matrix 2 came out, Keanu donated a reported $75 million to the crew of the
film, a contribution that has never been matched.
Keanu Reeves' nature is a testament to strong character, even in the darkest of times.
Just because bad things happen to you doesn't mean you should become a bad person.
His story shows that no matter how successful you look on the outside, you have no idea
what someone is going through on the inside.
That even a homeless person you walk past could be the most selfless and strongest person
Therefore, we should always greet people with kindness first.
Every struggle in your life has shaped you into the person you are today.
Be thankful for the hard times.
They can only make you stronger.
