Hi guys, welcome back to my channel. So today we're going to do a productive day in the life
at Juilliard. We are going to start our day off like I always like to by making the bed because
it's the one habit that you can do every day and it's easy. So if you make your bed, it'll-
we need to calm down. We need to calm down. I was actually listening to a podcast. It was
talking about how if you like do your daily tasks in a calm way, it'll like tell your nervous system
that everything is okay and then you'll just be like less stressed throughout the day. So we're
going to try that. We need to calm down. So to run through the day, I have history class from 10 30
to like 12. Then I have a lesson from like 1 30 to 3 and then I have listening class from 5 30 to 7
and then I also need to practice, make oboe reeds, make english horn reeds, go to the gym.
I also do need more food. So let's go do all of that. Calm, calm.
It's a little bit after nine so I'm going to start some score studying for my orchestra cycle
starting on Monday, which is in like three or four days for about an hour.
So my history class is called modernism in opera. It's actually a really good class. I like it. It
goes by really fast. Today we're talking about- one sec.
Okay, we're back from class. Normally I would frantically go out and buy groceries right now
because the fridge is running low, okay? And my snacks are running low and I kind of want
more of my poppy that I drink like every day. But recently I've been using thrive,
which is today's sponsor for the video. And let me just show you what I got.
My thrive box. Let's do an unboxing together. Show you all the exciting things I got.
And so especially with being back to school, I'm still trying to figure out my routine,
doing the necessary things I need to do, like buying food so that I can survive.
Thrive makes it super easy. I would say the theme for today's order was very much like protein
snacks because my schedule at school is very random. And so I often find myself snacking a lot.
And so especially on thrive, they have a lot of good high protein snacks that I feel actually good
about eating. Without further ado, I got some magic spoon protein bars. I got, I think, yeah,
I got two of these purely Elizabeth dark chocolate oatmeals, especially in the mornings. This is
super fast because I can just heat it up in the microwave and it's also high protein because
gains, you know, Ooh, I just got the egg. My babies, my poppies. Also this reminded me because
I often see poppies that are really overpriced and thrive ensures that all of your groceries
are at the cheapest price, which makes me feel really good about saving money. Let's see. I also
got, Oh, you can tell I'm kind of obsessed with purely Elizabeth, but this is great. I actually
just ran out of my other granola that I also got from thrive. And with the buy it again feature,
it makes it really easy to just buy the same thing again. I saw these snacks, which I want to try
chick pea puffs for a little late night study sesh. I mean, that sounds fun and exciting. Oh,
I forgot what this is. Why is it wrapped so nicely? Oh, I got radios tomato basil soup for
easy fast dinner. So if you want to try thrive, which you should, especially if you're a college
student, make sure to click the link in my description box or go to thrive market.com
slash Spencer Rubin for 30% off your next order and a free gift. Let's get back to our day.
Actually, speaking of fast and efficient groceries, I meal prepped a dense bean salad
this week. And if you don't know what a dense bean salad is, I'll show you it's beans and it's
dense and it's a salad. This is what it looks like. And it doesn't look stunning. And I like
it because when it's time for lunch, which it's time for lunch, I just like take it out of the
fridge and no cooking efficiency. Okay. I'm going to go eat lunch. I'm on my way to my lesson,
but I will not be able to film. So I will check in with you guys when I'm done.
Okay, I am done with my lesson and it is time to make a read. So let's make a read.
I'm using a new mic for today. So hopefully the audio is crisp and clear. I've also been
doing some experimenting with readmaking where I tie it one day and then finish it the next. So
I have some reads already tied. So I'm going to jump to those after I finish tying the blanks
that I'll then work on tomorrow, if that makes sense. I'm actually going to use my shaping
machine today. So the shaping machine allows you to shape with a machine. Okay. That was like the
stupidest thing I've ever said. The shaping machine allows you to shape a piece of cane
without having to take the ears off afterwards, which are a massive pain in the butt. So I'm
still trying to figure out how to make this work because I'm getting some leaking, which is not fun,
but so you have machine and that's it. Okay. Now I'm just going to scrape a little bit in
the middle before folding it over. Go over the score line. Now we're going to fold the
piece of cane in half. I'm going to use some black thread today. Where's my wax? Where's the wax?
Where's the wax? Why can't I find you? Oh my God. Oh my God. Oh my God. We need to calm down.
Where is the wax? Found it. And if you've watched my past vlogs, you know that this wax is,
let's say together, bubble gum flavored. Thank you. If you don't get that in the next video,
you need to be paying more attention. Staples, staples, staples. Which staple should we use?
This reed was awful. So we're going to cut this off and we'll use her tying.
I love when it just comes together so fast. If it cracks on one side, I tend to crack the other
side because that'll help with a more symmetrical opening. Let's cut it off. Okay. Then I'm just
going to scrape a little bit off the tip to clip it open without it cracking. You don't have to be
too careful at this point. Excuse me. Let's clip her open and let's click the overlap.
And a good test to see if the sides are tight is to stick a plaque in the reed and see if it grips
tightly. You should be able to dangle the reed from the plaque. Yeah. She's not going anyway.
Okay. Okay. Now I'm going to scrape another reed. Okay. Let's see what we're starting with.
Okay. So just like extremely resistant. So let's get this thing
vibrating. You shouldn't really scrape for tone until it's vibrating.
Okay. So now we're vibrating and we're at least in the ballpark pitch-wise.
The tone is a little blaring. Let's go for some more depth. Pairing the sides is a really good
way to raise the pitch and also get rid of any excess rattling that might be in the reed.
Okay. Let's try it on the oboe. I actually kind of like this. I might try to get more
zing and depth to it, but I don't want to over scrape this. So I'm going to give myself three
minutes and if nothing good comes out of it, then we're going to start practicing. All right.
Hello? All right. It is 5.20 right now and I need to head back to school for listening class. Today
we are studying two Bach cantatas and I often get asked what we do in listening class and the point
of the class is to help train our ear and listen for certain things that we then want to adapt in
our own interpretation. It's a very useful class and I'm glad that we have it. So let's head back
to school. JJ. Um, what? Um, what? Um, what? That was so iconic.
It is obviously it is nighttime out, but I want to make some English horn blanks for tomorrow.
I think I'm just going to do one. Actually, I'm just going to do time-lapse because I don't feel
filming a detailed tying video. So enjoy the time-lapse.
Oh, all right. I'm back from the gym. I need to go shower, but I'm going to close the video
out here. So thank you guys so much for watching my day in the life. I hope you enjoyed. Much more
make sure to like and subscribe and I'll see you in the next one. Bye-bye.
