Alt. titles: Pocket notebooks for productivity Use this pocket notebook to achieve your goals The best everyday carry notebooks Yearly planner for quarterly goal setting
So the three notebooks that I'm going to be talking about today are my write in
the rain notebook, which is more of a notepad.
And then I have my field notes, just pocket notebook.
And then I have my moleskin yearly planner.
So my personal favorite thing about these three notebooks is that they are all
pretty much the same size.
So they easily stacked on top of one another and they're just super easy to
bring with me wherever I go.
It's really easy to get distracted by your phone or computer when you're trying
to just take a simple note, which is why I opt to use these physical analog
notebooks for simple writing to dues and idea capturing.
So there's basically a blizzard happening outside right now.
It's been ripping all day.
You can probably see in the window behind me, but crazy day here in Montana.
Also just for full transparency here, I do not only use physical notebooks.
I also use digital note taking apps and I have been recently using notion for that.
I'll definitely be making some notion videos in the future.
Let me know what you guys want to see in there and let me know if you guys use
notion because I'm still learning it myself, but hoping to share more of what
I'm learning with you guys in the future.
But today I figured I would take a little bit of a different approach and share my
full setup or how I use my notebooks just in everyday life.
I have one for planning, one for productivity and one for organization.
So first up on the list, I have my yearly planner, which I personally use the
moleskin yearly planner, and this is the weekly horizontal layout.
I've used these guys for a couple of years now and they're awesome.
I mostly love the simplicity of them because there's no extra templates or
layouts or anything's on the pages.
It's just super simple and really easy to format to how you want to use it.
So in this notebook, I basically plan out things, um, throughout
the year that are coming up.
So I kind of just go through it at the beginning of the year, write down
anything that I know is coming up, whether that's in January or March or
August, just throughout my whole year, just so that I can get everything that I
know is happening down in a physical place.
Besides using it for just a normal calendar, I also use it for my weekly
tasks and usually I'm using it for more work related things.
Basically this becomes a to-do list for the high priority tasks that I have going
on that I know I need to get done every single week.
So for me, this person includes like what day I'll be filming my video, what day
I'll be editing, um, any meetings that I have going on, and then also reminders
for writing my newsletter, publishing it, and then writing my YouTube video
and publishing that as well.
But for things like grocery lists, to-do lists and random little notes
throughout the day, I like to use my notepad and I will be talking
about that in just a little bit.
I try to keep the important high priority things in this planner here and let all
the other things land in one of these other two notebooks.
So along with work related things, I like to use this notebook for setting
quarterly goals and kind of staking them out in the future.
For example, I will flip to March 31st in my notebook here.
And, um, I have March 31st, a Sunday is when Q1 ends or quarter one ends.
And then of course on April 1st, a Monday, quarter two will be beginning.
So I just write that down in my notebook here, and that's just an easy way for me
to look ahead and know that, okay, if this is my quarter one goal, I want to hit it
by this date just to kind of keep things accountable and just to keep
me on track for hitting my goals.
My favorite thing about this notebook specifically is that it just gives me a
bigger picture view of the year and of my quarterly goals and just seeing how
many weeks I have to hit those goals.
And then also just having a physical place to write down all the things that are
happening throughout the year and my schedule.
That way I can also be breaking down my bigger quarterly goals into weekly goals
and kind of section them out in my notebook here, um, based on daily tasks
and just making sure I'm hitting those high priority things each day.
So that is my Moleskine yearly planner.
And of course I like to use this for planning.
So the next thing on the list is my field notes pocket notebook.
Um, I also sometimes use the Moleskine ones.
I don't really have a favorite.
My method for using these little guys is constantly evolving, but today I'm going
to be talking about using them for goal setting and productivity.
It might kind of sound strange to use these for productivity.
Um, but I do have a method that I really enjoy using that I've kind
of developed over the past years.
So typically these little notebooks contain 64 pages or somewhere around
there, which makes them awesome to use for daily writing for about two months.
So because of this, I find these to be a really powerful tool for achieving your
quarterly goals in a shorter amount of time.
One quarter is typically three months.
But if I fill this notebook in two months, I will try to hit my quarterly goal in
the amount of time that it takes me to fill this notebook.
And here's my exact method for how I do that.
So first up, I will write my quarterly goal in the back of a fresh notebook.
And then each day I would just write a quick summary of the action
that I took to achieve that goal.
I typically just do that by filling out one of the pages here, just one side.
And although my quarterly goals are set to be achieved in three months, I will
try to hit it by the time that I fill this notebook, which typically
takes around two months.
These guys just provide me a really good way to kind of document my journey,
document the steps that I'm taking to achieve my goals, keep myself
accountable, and to expedite the process of achieving my quarterly goal.
I try to use these specifically for that reason, but I also like to include
any good ideas that I have in here, just as an easy way to document any
ideas in a physical location, rather than getting distracted by my phone
or laptop, if I try and pull it out and write down the idea that I have.
Putting this little guy to the side.
The third one on the list is my right in the rain universal all weather notepad.
So these are actually waterproof technically.
Um, I, of course I've never, never technically written in the rain.
Um, but if you want to do that, this is the one for you.
The pages are kind of waterproof.
Um, that doesn't affect the right ability.
I think there are still great to write on with a ballpoint pen.
Um, but still, these are just really good places to document just daily
to-do lists, grocery lists, random notes or phone numbers, names, just
things like that, that pop up during your day or week, and you don't want to forget.
So I find that this notepad is best for organization.
So we have the planner for planning.
We have the pocket notebook for productivity, and then we
have the notepad for organization.
I like to use these for organization, but they're also really good
just for overall brain clutter.
So I will categorize it as organization slash clutter, clutter control.
Maybe that sounds better.
I figured having a good old fashioned notebook and pen and paper would
be a great way to do this.
Um, just because it's easy to use.
You can bring it anywhere and Hey, even if it's raining, I could whip this
bad boy out and write down some notes.
Sure enough, I found myself using these pretty often, both for work and at home,
just for writing down quick notes and tasks.
So I personally really like to use these for video editing.
Um, of course that's something that I do for work and for YouTube.
And these are really good for when I'm reviewing a video.
I like to write down the timestamp and then the changes that
I want to make or reorder things.
And these are just a really good place to write things like that down because
when I'm using my computer for something else, I can't really be taking notes
and reviewing the video.
So having a physical sheet of paper and a pen is just a great way to do that
without having to multitask on a computer or your phone, the same idea and method
can probably be used for whatever you do for work as well.
I personally just find it super useful to have a pen and paper handy at any given
moment, uh, just because I have things that come to my mind, things that I want
to remember, write down or document and something like this can just act as a
landing strip for any ideas that come to mind because everybody knows when
you're on a call with like customer service, they're always telling you,
Oh, call this number and they'll get you the right answer.
And you're trying to, Oh, you got to pen and pen and paper handy.
And I'm going to be like, I sure do right here, right in hand.
I'm ready whenever.
And you can say that with confidence when you have this notepad
and a pen ready at all times.
To be honest, I don't really have a specific method that I use these for,
and that's kind of the beauty of them.
Let's just, let's just see what I have in here.
To-do list, video editing order, a weekly to-do list, kind of like a landing
page idea for pitching some brands.
Ooh, let's see.
I have our cabinet layout when we were renovating our house.
Hold on.
We're, we're getting to my favorite personal personal note.
This is our plumbing under our sink when we were renovating our house, which I
have not only one, technically, technically three different renditions, YouTube
video ideas, that's actually really funny.
I should have dated this because these are like 10 or 15 video ideas that I came
up with before I started my YouTube channel.
And now I actually have a YouTube channel.
So something must've worked.
So that concludes the right in the rain notepad.
And so these are the three simple but effective notebooks that I use pretty
much every single day for planning productivity and organization.
So my personal favorite thing about these three notebooks is that they are all
pretty much the same size, so they easily stacked on top of one another.
They're easy to throw in a backpack or your pocket, and they're just super
easy to bring with me wherever I go.
So if you're kind of old school like me and looking to get back into sort of an
analog note-taking system, I really think that these will help you out.
I'll have a link down below for each of these three notebooks.
