he X4009 Series is an exclusive limited edition timepiece crafted from the historic Mk1a Spitfire aircraft X4009, once piloted by Australian fighter ace Paterson Clarence Hughes during the iconic Battle of Britain.
Pat Hughes, DFC, is celebrated as one of Australia’s greatest WWII fighter aces, credited with up to 17 victories during the pivotal 1940 aerial campaign. His aircraft, the X4009, currently undergoing restoration by the Hunter Fighter Collection charity, holds a remarkable combat legacy.
Each X4009 timepiece features aluminum from the aircraft’s original fuselage, offering owners a unique connection to history while supporting the restoration of this legendary Spitfire.
Hi guys and welcome back to the channel. Today we've got a watch I'm actually really excited
about and I was absolutely blown away when I got it in for review. This is the Wreck Watch
DNA Edition X4009 and it is absolutely packed with loads of little details which make it
absolutely superb. Now the brand itself, they're based out in Denmark. I'm no stranger to the
brand as I do own one of their watches from many years ago. This one here, that's an old 2020
edition. Now Wreck Watches started off with basically I think it was around about 2014
and they got their main funding in 2015 when they appeared on what we know in the UK as Dragon's Den
and I think four out of the five investors believed so much what they were planning and
that they actually invested which is really good going and what I like about their watches,
their recurring theme is they always feature a part of something special within the watch and
then they take design aspects of that product and they integrate it into the actual watch itself.
So we're talking things like P51 Mustangs, Porsche RS race cars, Evil Knievels motorbike,
believe it or not an SR71 Blackbird and even the classic Lotus F1 John Player special car
and this one is no exception as this part here, this watch is actually a piece of the fuselage
of a Mark 1 Spitfire which flew in the Battle of Britain and how cool is that to say you've
got a piece of history on your wrist in a modern timepiece. Let's talk sizes first before we get
into real detail. The size of the case is 41mm, the bezel is another half millimeter bigger,
the thickness of a watch now I've got to say an absolute yeah normally I'm so used to brands
always saying the thickness is smaller than what it actually is, they state 13.6mm, I read 13mm
so hats off to them on that one but lug to lug is coming in at 48.7mm and the strap size on this
is 20mm. Now as I've said this part down here is part of the fuselage, now whose actual plane it
was, was the Australian fighter ace Patterson Clarence Hughes and he fought in the Battle of
Britain, he came all the way from Australia to actually help defend the country and so he flew
in the you know several sorties I believe it was something like 21 sorties between September and
August in 1940 and he racked up I think it was 14 confirmed kills, it could have been more some
people have said and I think it was nine actually in the Battle of Britain so it made him one of the
the top aces of the day and I think one of the top three aces in Australia, that's from Australia I
should say and unfortunately he was brought down at the young age of 22 and his actual plane was
salvaged and is now in Australia and they are slowly rebuilding it which is you know it'd be
lovely to see it back in the air at some point and so what they've done is made this limited edition
watch it is only 844 pieces, they have put that across four different models and this one at the
moment is still available I believe there's only a handful left but the UK retail price of this
is coming at just under £1,800 there's a pre-order available on the two more editions they're doing
and that's around about the £1,500 and honestly I think it is worth every single penny of that
price so anyway the dial, the dial they've tried to keep with the they've tried to come for a modern
version of a dirty dozen now what's meant by that is the dirty dozen was the allies kind of watch
back in the day and it always featured the nice big bold numbers going around on the dial and a
sub dial at the six o'clock position there and they've gone with the military theme with the
triangle um sorry the arrow pointing there that was always the military kind of designation so
they've kept with that but done it in a more modern way they have applied hour marks on here
now I must say they're so well polished you catch them in certain lights and they just glint
they look absolutely superb the way they've done the loom is to try and give it a little
bit more of an aged look to it and I have to say I like it I think it does look very very nice
you've got the um inscription here dedicated to the pilot and his mark 1 actual plane registration
it's actually a mark 1AX4009 followed by the date there it looks I think such a cool dial
I like these incredibly well polished hands and just that little detail up there the white tip
making it you know you can easily read the exact time there overall I think they've done a really
tidy job as we come past that we're greeted with a sapphire crystal I believe they say there's three
layers of anti-reflective coating on there it does a respectable job to be fair now the bezel
is actually a GMT bezel so this allows you to record a second time zone so you would actually
just set this up to whichever number as it comes around here so it's got a nice action actually
very solid very solid is that back plate yeah there's a little bit back plate to be fair
but it is a really it's a pleasure to use it feels nice and smooth and just line that up
oh I've gone too far that will bug me if I don't put that back
and there we go that's it lined up there I really like the dial I like the
um there's no insert as such to the actual bezel it is just all machined into the metal itself
very easy to grasp no problem at all we have a limited edition number along the side here
so as you can see a nice little plaque it's all done nicely if they have actually treated the
case it looks like a gunmetal grey kind of finish and what's really nice this is one of the little
one of the details look at that polished edge they've gone with there it's just nice I love
the way evenness it just kind of catches the light in certain ways and it looks great just
like the hands and dial one thing I didn't mention actually is the loom the loom is really quite
good on this one now as we come around to the side here we again greeted with a little detail
if you imagine that's like the Spitfire as you look down onto the Spitfire that's a profile of
the wings also that is the section inside the wings which you know how they actually constructed
it does look super I even like the details on the crown here it's they really have taken their time
to you know really make some rather special I believe it's a screw down crown as you can see
there I think we feature 100 meters of water resistant with this watch so you've got no
problem in taking this into a pool or whatever no problem at all now in the back there we are
now this is one of Salita's actual in-house I say in-house it was original design I think it's
um it's not based on any current ETA model so it is one of their own unique designs and I do like
the fact that rotor on the back features the you know the frontal view of the Spitfire there
they've even actually I can't remember the treatment they've done to the case back the
actual movement but it matches the same as what's on the case itself and again we're greeted with a
little bit more details going along the side here they really go to town now the movement itself
I put this one on the time grapher and it was coming in at round about plus three seconds
and honestly on the wrist I have found it has been about because I don't always normally wear
the watches you know I'm giving so yeah this but this one turned up I just wanted to put it on
straight away and I found over the last few days it has been coming in at plus three seconds
the actual movement itself has got 31 joules and it got power reserve around about 41 hours so
typical for like an SW type SW200 type movement actually but with the sub dial at the bottom
now when it comes to the casing of this watch it comes in an amazing tin which you then pull out
and you've got a second section in there with a proper little case for the watch to sit in
I honestly really I think you can tell by this video I do really like this watch I think it is
a very cool watch when it comes to the strap on this watch we've got a nice very soft pliable
leather on here the clasp itself they've even perlaged the center of the clasp clasp I should
say and that comes round we do only have one keeper you slide that in and as you can see
locks down nicely with the REC logo there overall I think it is absolutely superb let me put it on
my wrist so you've got an idea how it looks quick zoom out quick wrist check I'm wearing my Hanhart
417ES and Bob I don't even know what Bob's got there this is an absolutely mad watch brand new
release from Oris and it is wow it's something else the altimeter I think it is it is a very
cool watch and possibly one of Oris's most expensive watches to date as well so put this
on my wrist size is seven and a quarter inches that works out to around about 18.5 centimeters
so that is it on my wrist there I really like this one I really do hope they do well I think
this is an absolutely stunning watch let me know what you think of this one in the comments guys
but most importantly you'll stay safe out there take care bye
