About my garden I live on the edge of USDA zone 6b/7a We have hot and humid summers and cold winters with occassional snow and ice storms. Everything that appears tropical and is in a container goes indoors or to a greenhouse for the winter. The plants in the ground stay in the ground all year. The massive palms are faux planted in their containers to keep from blowing over, they all go to a greenhouse during the winter.

Oh, I didn't know you were going to be
there too, pumpkin. There's a little
burst of unexpected cuteness or with
wobbly camera. Hey, what's up, garden
friends? Jeff, here's a video. Hope
you're doing well. I'm great. Kind of
late to be starting a video, but got to
do what we got to do. There's
Don't do 3D puzzles. You see this? I'm
sorry. I tried to fight off the add.
Couldn't do it. All right, moving on.
The time has come. All the big beautiful
palm trees have to go off to their
winter rest in the greenhouse. I can't
believe it's time to send them away
already. But uh well actually it is a
little bit earlier than usual about 3
weeks earlier than normal. That's
because I just have a lot going on at
the end of the month and I don't want to
have to deal with all this at that time.
So I scheduled them to come about 3
weeks early. What this means for this
video is well just got a lot of stuff to
do. Is that vague enough for you? Sorry.
I need to get everything pulled out for
the most part and uh make some final
decisions too as far as you know whether
I'm going to send these guys. I don't
think I'm going to. My gut is telling me
just don't send them back. So, I
probably won't. I'm kind of over these
palm trees. I'm not going to get rid of
them. throw them in the house during the
winter time probably. Uh but I don't
want to pay to store them. It's not
necessary. They'll fit in the house just
fine. I have two edundas down here that
are in these big blue Miami planters.
Need to get those pulled out. That might
wait until tomorrow. Uh for right now,
even though it's getting I didn't
realize it was going to be this dark so
soon. It's not that late, but you know.
Okay. It's that time of year. Can see
that. I also need to do some watering,
don't I? A lot of watering. It has been
unseasonably warm. What happened here?
What's wrong with you? Did you fall
over?
I don't know what could have even gotten
in there to knock this over. It's fine.
We'll give them a drink. They'll be
okay. Uh yeah, unseasonably warm. Oh my
gosh, you guys. I skipped one day of
watering.
I was doing things. Didn't have a chance
to get to it. Such babies. Gave him a
big drink yesterday. I um I probably
should have put these basil into larger
containers,
but you know, here we are. I didn't feel
like spending a lot of money on a whole
bunch of new containers for the basil,
and I probably should just gone up to
like an 8 in pot for those. Uh yeah, I
think it was 90 today, and today is
October 1st.
It's ridiculous. I am actually ready for
the cool weather. I have been for quite
a while and it's not going to be humid
than when it's hot. I have to water
non-stop and I'm over it. I don't want
to do it anymore. Been there, done that
enough this year. I'm ready to take a
break from all that. Next year will be
better. Be able to get the uh drip
irrigation set up more properly. I
didn't get it run back here. If I had
the drip run back there, it just would
have made such a tremendous difference.
Get that done next year. That will help
an awful lot. There we go.
So pretty. That was the art and soul
catch a wave. Are you really dry?
It's a little moist. Still going to
water it. Oh, look at the little baby,
which has actually done a really good
amount of growing since it got put up.
This is the Aztec King, right? Just a
little baby one. But yep,
Aztec King. big big mongave.
I don't know if I called those agave or
mongave. Do you know what I mean? These
I'm done with for the year. They don't
need to be out here anymore. And I'll
give it a drink just because it's right
there. But uh it doesn't need to be out
here. This is extra pottery.
Going to need to find something better
to do with that. You
Oh man, this thing needs to be cleaned
up. I It's thirstyish, but I also need
to just come and pull out a bunch of the
old foliage that's in there. Yeah. Yeah,
that could use a cleanup, but still in
good shape. Lots of good new growth on
this. Wonder if I should pull the rocks
out of the bottom of that when I take it
inside for the winter time. I don't
think that'd be a bad idea. Look at all
the soil over here.
Got a busted coconut.
Okay. Can I move this without causing a
lot of problems with this rug? Probably
not. Scoot it over here. That's fine.
The lovely seashell planter that I
didn't I could have done more with this
this year. I like this. I just feel like
I could have done better. I should not
be piling things around this table
because when they come here to get the
palms, particularly the queen palm,
probably have to move this table so you
remember not to do that with the rest of
them. How's our olive doing? Well, your
soil's still nice and moist and you were
watered at the same time as the others.
Kind of bizarre,
huh? Well, maybe that blend is holding
on to moisture better than some of the
others. That's how it would appear.
Seems like a happy olive. Been pushing
up some new growth since I got it potted
up. It's got two tiny little little
babies on it. Oh, I didn't get this one
planted. I didn't know it was back here.
This one, two of them fell between the
cracks.
Okay. Well, these will be coming inside
for the winter.
Oops.
Thought those thought I had planted them
all up. I had one, two, three, four, I
guess. Oh, you know what? I bought more.
I didn't need to. And I bought a couple
extras midsummer. That's why these are
over here. And then I didn't even end up
using them. Oh, beautiful. M. This is
not a mave. This is a mangave.
That pretty. It's the Joe Hoke.
Very nice agave. I love the variegation.
I'll set it right over here next to the
dead hydrangeas. You really get the full
aesthetic of how beautiful it is. Wonder
what I should put in the container
that that hydrangeas inside of. Here's a
cute pot.
Why don't Why don't I have anything in
this? We'll fix that. Get something
planted up in there. Anything else
hiding out underneath the sweet chine?
Yes, a dog toy. Oh, a really gross rag.
Jeez.
And a variegated luccoia. That No, it's
okay. I was going to say it seemed
better days. This isn't that bad
considering I didn't even realize it was
down there. Succulent arrangement here.
It needs to be cleaned up.
do a bunch of cutbacks. Get things put
back into place where they belong. Also
going to move this elsewhere. Look at
that container. Isn't that so pretty?
So so so pretty. Love that pot. And
that's actually a fruit bowl. But pot
fruit bowl. You know what I mean? Oh.
Oh, this is going to make Owen happy.
Owen, my nephew, he loves these parrots.
I had these out for his birthday party
which was back in June. I had four of
them or six of them placed around the
backyard. And see how they the feets you
can hook them onto things and if you do
it properly they'll stand upright. Uh
some of them got blown down and then he
started walking and he found one he
picks it up and it's been his little
buddy. But the one that he's obsessed
with has a hole in it. So I blow it up
and it deflates and he thinks that
that's amusing. But my lungs don't enjoy
that game so much over and over and over
again with the inflating. So glad that
there's another one over he can play
with. All right, that sweep line laying
down in there. Come on.
And just break it.
Just do some like I need my snips. Where
are my snips? Oh no, I found the end of
it. I don't need my snips. We'll just do
this.
Come on. Oh my gosh.
Well, that didn't work out as easily as
I thought it was going to. The crap.
That got really tangled up in there.
We go. This guy needs a repot. That's
something I should do before I move them
inside. There we go. Sheesh. That was a
stubborn piece of sweet potato vine.
This is a threx radiatic. Then thinx.
How do you say it? Always said thrax.
Let's see where it was starting to get
too much sun and heather there, which is
saying a lot for those palms. Okay,
first one has been unearthed. In years
past, I have gone through and cut all of
the annuals and everything out of the
containers. I don't think I need to do
that this year. Uh with the exception of
a pseudar ransom that's over there
underneath the queen palm. I don't I
just don't care enough to the trouble to
remove the sweet potato vines from these
containers. Uh if they survive the
winter in the pots, that's great. If
not, oh well. They don't guarantee your
underpantings. In fact, I'm pretty sure
they like rip them all out cuz it just
makes it harder to keep the plants
watered. But I'm going to let them
handle that. That's part of the service.
I have a tendency to want to do
everything for them and I still pay the
same amount of money. So this year I'm
I'm not going to do quite as much of
that um and you know allow people to do
the things that paying them to do,
right? It's just it's a thing like you
know there was a period of time where um
I I had a company that would come by and
clean the house once a week and I really
felt a strong obligation to help them. I
did. It made me so uncomfortable and I
cleaned the house thoroughly before they
would show up and I was like, well, what
is the point of this? But I'm like,
well, they shouldn't have to clean up
even though that's what I'm paying them
to. I did, you know, it was a whole
thing. Uh, it was necessary at a time
where there was a lot of stuff going on,
but not anymore. And, you know, it's
sort of the same situation here where
I'm going, all right, this is what they
do. Go ahead and let them do what
they're supposed to do and what you're
paying them to do, which is to go ahead
and pull the plants. Technically,
they will. I would never do this then,
but they would. I don't have to lift a
finger. They would pull out all these
things on their own and completely unpop
the other pumps. They would do all of
that. I would never ask them to do that.
And it's like another $65 per extra
hour. So, yeah, there's that, too. I
just think it's considerate to have
everything lined up and ready to go. So,
I'm going to
find my dolly.
I don't know. Oh, it has 400 lb of pool
salt sitting on it right now. Oh, that's
fun. Well, I don't really need the dolly
right now. We can just We can just do
this. Just do the little scooty thing.
Just spin it. Just spin it into place
until get it where it needs to go. Jeez.
Poor dag horn fern. It fell back here
about two weeks ago and I couldn't get
to it. I was like, well, it'll be okay.
I know they're tough. Got it out of
there and get this guy cleaned up now.
Little baby. Set it over here so it
doesn't get exposed to too much
sunlight. Look how the soil, all the
dirt. It's amazing how in just a matter
of months everything builds up so
quickly. Makes such a huge mess. I don't
think I really need to pull these out. I
would look nicer if they weren't there
because, you know, everything's being
restructured right now, but they can
stay. I would just have to find
somewhere else to put them, right? So,
I'll deal with those another time. Not
something I need to mess with right now.
I am curious to get this tie out of
here. This tie constellation monstera.
Get a good look at it out on its own and
see what kind of grown it's done. You
hooked yourself to something. Probably
the monsteras like to do that. Like to
grab onto things. Okay, I get it now.
Just knock something over. What are you
hooked to?
Did you? I bet it put a root out into
this heliconium behind there. Yep. It's
exactly what it did. I get it. There we
go. Oh my gosh.
This thing has grown so much. I mean, so
so so much. I don't know if you guys
remember, I got this on clearance
uh from Lowe's. I think it was $15.
And I think that uh
Well, it's the I think it's the newest
leaf was this one right here. So, it had
these and so it's grown this one.
This one. Man, these are nice big
leaves. This one. There's Turbo.
Size comparison. Big dog. See, there's
my knee. There's my dog. Big dog. It's
opening up another one.
Love to see it. Nice, happy, healthy
growing plants. Now, this helakonia is a
No, this one's done. So, I didn't unpot
this one or repot this one. I just stuck
it back there and it looked really good
there, but um well, it doesn't now.
Served its purpose. It was very pretty.
I had a few extras. I went overboard
with the helakonas this year. I don't
know what was in this, but well,
whatever it was, it it's no more.
Maybe it'll come back. Who knows? Is
there anything else in this container?
No. Okay. Oh.
Oh, this one's heavy.
I didn't really try that hard either.
And just give it a twist and a scoot.
No. Okay. All right. Going to need two
hands for this one. Oh, I don't need to
pull this out. That's not necessary. I
just needed to clear a path. They have
the gigantic tree cart and dolly. They
can get these out. That makes more sense
than having these just set over here in
the middle of the patio. I suppose I
could have left that, but not really. I
had to get that edenity out of the way.
Was blocking my path to get in here. If
I go ahead and move this orchid, cuz
that seems like something would get
knocked over pretty swiftly in that
spot, doesn't it? All right, set you
over here. Okay, so that's one, two,
three already. Oh. Oh, shoot.
I forgot about this edenidia over here.
I have to move everything that's sitting
in front of this double trunk edinidia.
All right. Well, guess there's no better
way to do it than to just pick something
up and move it, right? So, that's what
I'm going to do. I'm going to start
pulling all these things out and we'll
pick up and talk about
I don't know something. Okay. Hey, that
wasn't too bad. This is probably where
I'm going to go ahead and call it for
the night cuz well it doesn't look dark
when I point that way but when I come
over here everything's going to be all
grainy. Just had to clear a path so that
I can get this guy out. Looks like this
path held itself up pretty well. If you
don't know this is a very difficult spot
to get these big containers in and out
of. And I really went to town trimming
out a way to get them in there cuz it
always settles in. Put a bunch of gravel
down and packed it down. I'm sure it's
still going to be a nightmare getting it
out of there. Always by myself. I'm not
going to do it by myself. I'm going let
them do it. So, I always have a team of
people. And if not, then I will help
him. They can get out. I don't know.
Maybe I'll work on that tomorrow.
Tomorrow, they're coming the day after
tomorrow. So, tomorrow I need to focus
on getting those two addinia palms out
of those pots. And then need to clear
out this area, everything that's in
front of the queen palm over here, which
really isn't much. There's only a few
things sitting in front of it. And then
what? The bird of paradise. I want to
forget about that one that's tucked way
back there.
These guys are always a challenge
though. I'm not looking forward to
dealing with these two. Now, one of them
I put into a plastic container, so in
theory, it will lift right out. We'll
see. This one right here, though, it's
just potted right into that container.
So, I need to get it out of there. I
need to find a pot. We're going have to
repot it. Uh, and I would ideally like
to find a pot that fits inside of those
pots that next year when they show up, I
can just drop them right into their
containers. That would make life a lot
easier and speed things up. It's nice
palm trees get delivered and just, you
know, plop them into their containers.
That's so nice. Okay, I think all these
things are out of the way. I'm going to
grab the hose and do some watering.
These are from the video from the other
day, which I filmed I don't know, two
hours ago. No, no, no, no, no. Yeah,
basically two hours ago. Oh.
Oh. Oh, something just flew out of the
Was that a bat? Do I have bats in my
attic? Huh? Would it just be one bat? I
don't think that's a thing. Is there
like a bat detector? How do I figure
that out? I just Did you see it? I just
saw it. Well, I'm going to keep my eyes
on that. I love bats. I don't really
know about in the attic. I could put up
some batous.
They might like that. All right, we get
back on track here. Yeah, we'll pick up
tomorrow and uh handle the rest of
everything and then they'll come get the
palm trees the day after that and then
going have to do some cleaning. Got a
lot of dirt to clean up out here and I
can move some plants around and get
things set up for what they'll look like
the rest of the year and a lot of the
beginning of next year, too. Okay, I
hope y'all don't mind, but I'm using you
because I noticed when I was passing
through here, what was that 15, 18
minutes ago? whatever it was 20
something minutes ago. I filmed all that
stuff you just saw. Got through that
very, very quickly. Brought you all
along through most of it. Didn't set the
camera down very much. But I notic when
I was walking through here that I can
see this so much better through the
camera lens in person.
This is just awful.
It is terrible. I don't know why I just
had to torture myself. Over here, I have
a tray of pieces that when I'm not
looking through the camera pretty much
all look identical. But the camera is
blocking out that 3D effect. Really,
what it's doing is it's balancing out
the light and it's making it so I can
actually see the pieces. So, so far with
this puzzle, for the most part, not all
the way through. Hey, pumpkin.
You don't really know where something
goes until you put it there. And you
kind of have to tilt your head a little
bit and go, "Huh, is that in the right
spot?" Because some of these pieces like
this one, you know, like what the what
the heck is that? And remember, you can
see this better. I can't as long as I'm
looking through the camera. Without the
camera, it's a beige color and a rainbow
of looks like an oil spill on the
bottom. This is nice. I'm not going to
take y'all through doing the entire
puzzle, but I thought that was
interesting. The camera bounces out the
light, so
it loses some of that 3D effect
somewhat. Kind of, but still sort of
there.
I don't know. I Yeah, I don't know. Do
you guys I feel bad for you. You're not
really getting the effect. Or maybe on a
larger screen you will and I just made
you nauseous. I don't know. I'm sorry. A
Hey, pumpkin. You saying hi? Everybody a
kiss? That was nice. He's so sweet. It's
morningish.
No, I did not get very much done on the
puzzle. This is the puzzle from hell.
And I wish that it would just die
again. I forgot. I did the thing I
showed you all last night about how I
can see the pieces better with the
camera, but not better enough. You know,
like that. What the What the heck am I
supposed to do with that? It's part of a
tree. There's trees on here. See the
tree? Tree tree.
They're all over the place.
That part's actually not that
complicated. That's enough puzzle time.
If I look at it too long, it'll never
stop and I won't get anything done
except for maybe find like two more
puzzle pieces. Anyways, where did I
leave off last night slash like a minute
and a half, two minutes ago in this
video? I have absolutely
no idea.
Would have wor that gossip. All right,
I could go ahead and pull this out. I
feel like it would be courteous. These
guys right here, I don't mind them
handling those. They can do that. But
this one, it's going to be a pain in the
butt. I just don't feel like putting
them through that cuz getting that queen
palm out of the ground, it's going to be
a pain in the butt as it is. So, I need
to handle these two edidas
and then clear the plants out from the
front of this, which that's absolutely
not going to be a problem. I just need
to move a few things. I assume it
depends really on whether or not they're
going to use the crane. If they're going
to use the crane, which I would think
would be a good idea since it's freaking
huge, then they just wrap a strap around
it and pull it up and then everything
falls over and I pick it back up easy.
This thing's going to be blowing up all
over me when I open it. All that
shaking. But if they don't use the
crane,
then uh well, they're they're not going
to be having a very good morning. Don't
know what the point is of bringing the
crane if you don't use it. But
apparently there's different sizes. We
talked about that in another video. They
don't know which size cranes will be
showing up all the time. So hopefully
the one that comes tomorrow will be big
enough. Oh, hey. Hello. Look, nice big
bloom on the fansa.
Smelts nice, doesn't it? Anything out of
you yet? Look at how much this one has
grown. I repotted this one in a video
not long ago at all. Maybe 3 weeks. And
it just like went poof when I repotted
it.
Yeah, it'll be in that pot for a while.
I can't wait to see what it flowers look
like. This one's supposed to be one of
the ones that has like two or three
flowers on it, which will be
interesting. I'm procrastinating. I
don't feel like doing this.
It's just It makes such a mess. Things
are already messy enough over here. I'm
sorry. I'm sorry, Aloe. Didn't mean to
do that. This one, if it hasn't rooted
into whatever's down below, it shouldn't
be that hard to get out of here. Oh, an
impatient that I didn't plant. That's
fun. I like how the impatience pop up
all over the place. Everything else
that's in here, I think I'm just going
to leave in here. I do have this little
legular area back here that I'm going to
pull out. I don't want that in there.
But, uh Oh, it's in a pot. It has a pot.
So, and it's ready to be moved up to a
larger pot. I started to repot this in
another one, I don't know, maybe a month
or two ago, and they really weren't very
established into their container. So, I
said, "All right, we'll just leave them.
Let them do their thing and grow on some
more." Oh, I should have turned the drip
off. I didn't think about that. That's
going to add some weight to this. Should
I pull the bromeilads out? I It's 2
years now. I've been doing the bromemads
in the front of these containers. I
wouldn't mind having change next year.
They're very easy to overwinter in the
grow space, though. Like, I lit I just
do this right here. I just pull them out
and then I set them on a shelf
somewhere. I don't even repot them and
they make it through the winter just
fine like that. So, it's easy enough
that I can pull them out. Look at the
new growth on this elastica down here.
Isn't that really pretty?
There's really nice color on this one. I
don't know. Is that a shriana? What are
you? I don't know. I don't know. It just
says fus. I'm sorry. But, uh, it's cool.
Has nice color to it. Things like this.
the beonia. I can just break those
apart,
give them back to the garden slash I
don't feel like cleaning them up. So,
that's the best I'm going to do with
them. Oh, this guy's growing all the way
down there into the garden. That's
awesome. It's got roots down there. I
don't have to worry about digging it up.
I was thinking about lifting these, not
digging them up, but lifting those
lmacia and maybe keeping them potted up
and using them again next year. But if
they root into the ground and see that
just pops right out, I don't have to
worry about it because Oh, there's me.
All right, I needed some spraying in
here. That time of year, the mealies are
just absolutely everywhere. Are they up
here or are they just hanging out down
there in the dark foliage?
I don't see them up here. Aren't the
cordalins? These guys are meie bug
magnets.
No.
Okay. Well, that was weird. I go ahead
and just try and get the rest of that
out of there. May as well.
All right. Wonder.
Oh, this is going to be hard. I'm going
to work on these for a while and get
them out of their containers. I'm not
going to film the process because it
will drive me up the walls trying to
deal with the camera and making sure
that I'm talking while I'm doing
everything. I'm not doing I'm just I'm
just This right here I need to lay it
down and pull. Hopefully, it'll come
out. That one over there is going to be
a bigger ordeal. Oh my god, that was
amazing. I have to find another one of
these containers for that other one. I
didn't have to. I just picked it up and
dropped it down. Which is the entire
point of putting them into a container
that actually fits inside of these pots.
I hope I have another one of those pots
to pot that one up into so that when
they come back next year, I can just
take them and just set them in there.
Hopefully, you noticed that you couldn't
really even tell that they were a pot
inside of a pot with all the trailers
coming over the edge. And that was that
was the point, right? These got some
good growth on them this year, doesn't
they? Look at them. Can you believe just
a couple years ago these were just some
crown shafts with just a couple rings on
them?
Yeah, looking good. All right, not as
excited about this one cuz I know it
ain't going to be fun. This one I do
need to probably go find a tarp for or
just accept I'm going to make an
extremely big mess while I'm doing this.
Huh. Wonder. Yeah, I'll take that fry
deck out of there. That doesn't need to
be in there. Also, these beonas, these
overwinter so easily. I could dig them
up and take them inside, but it's also
very possible they will overwinter in
these containers and come back next year
when they bring them back. How are the
meie bugs in this one? I see some stuff
going on down there. It's disappointing,
but not shocking. I do have to be more
on top of pulling some of the plants out
of these because I'm going to be pulling
the entire root ball out, right? It's
not going to just lift out all nice and
smooth like it did with that other one.
So, I'm going to work on this and uh I
don't know. While I'm working, I'm going
to think about what I would like to put
in these pots for the winter time.
This plant I had to call for
reinforcements. That thing's not
budging. Everything else has been going
so incredibly smoothly. And then that
that's freaking palm tree. However, we
got to go look at it cuz this thing is
just looking so good. I feel very
exposed. Even though the palm trees were
right here, for some reason, I feel more
exposed right here now. What's that
about? Okay, look at the freaking trunks
on this one. This thing is really girth
up. Come down to the side.
Nice fat mama. this palm tree every year
and the same for that one up until this
year. It gets its roots pruned and
repotted every single year because the
container I send them off to storage
with is larger than containers that fit
into these big blue pots here. These are
called Miami Planters. If you hear me
call them Miami Planters, it's from
Franches. These from Leu Leau, but you
know, it's a major pottery company. Anyh
who, I have to prune their roots to get
them back into these containers when
they show up the next spring because
they will root it out into the larger
containers I put them in. Uh up until
this year when I figured out that these
15gallon pots fit just perfectly inside
of these. I mean, not perfectly. They
stick up a little. They stick up some,
but not very much. And so that's why
this one lifted out so smoothly. And
this one isn't in a plastic nursery pot
because well, I didn't have these at the
time. I've been saving them so that I
could do this in the fall. And whatever
I put in here for the winter time for
fall through spring, I'll put inside of
these pots right here and then put this
palm tree into that one. And I'm just I
can't help but wondering if the yearly
root prune has been doing something for
the plant because I have never in my
life had edinidas that girth up this
well without getting a good amount of
sunlight. And there's not a ton of sun
over here. They get a okay amount of sun
up until early to mid July. And then you
know moving into summer things are
shifting and the sun's lower in the sky
and there's just a lot more shade over
here.
So that's what July, August, September.
Three of the six months that they're
here, they're getting a good amount of
shade. Morning sun, afternoon shade, and
still nice thick trunks on these. Like
these are really big and bulbous, which
is just awesome. So they're happy. I'm
having second thoughts about trying to
squeeze this into one of these little
black nursery cans. Uh uh we're just
going to have to see how that plays out.
I don't really know what to do with that
just yet. I had to call in
reinforcements because this thing does
not want to budge out of this pot and I
don't want to twist and pull and shimmy
the thing around too much and then end
up breaking the container. So, as
somebody who's going to be coming over,
we'll get this out. And I may go ahead
and pop this up into a larger container,
not one of these for the winter time,
and then next year when it comes, do the
root prune on it into one of these black
nursery pots. That just makes the most
sense to me that if I'm going to be
doing a root prune and to have to fit
the plant to a smaller container to do
that when they have the growing season
to make up for it and not when they're
going to go into a greenhouse where they
keep things at like 50 to 60°
and you know they're that's not going to
be great for them. That's daylight
hours. It's not artificially lit. It has
a translucent roof at the facility.
Why do I hear the beeping sounds that
the truck makes when they come here to
pick up my palm trees? They're not
supposed to be here until tomorrow.
Better have been some a-hole out here
with a golf cart or something that I was
hearing. But that sounded just like the
crane.
Okay, not the crane. That's good. I get
nervous this time of year because even
though they told me when they would be
here, sometimes they just show up. Uh
that would suck if that were to happen
to I mean I guess I'm fairly ready for
it. I could have everything with the
exception of that one palm tree ready to
go in I 5 minutes. Just got to pull this
guy out and then clear the stuff out
from the other palm tree. But I was
hoping to have things more prepped for
them. In fact, I guess that's what I'll
work on while I'm waiting for help to
get here. I might need to clear a path.
This beonia, it's just so freaking
pretty this year.
Pink teardrops.
Beautiful. Beonia Grandis. Hardy Beonia.
If you're in zone 6, give them a try.
Gorgeous perennial. I mean, look at it.
They just flower and flower and flower.
So pretty. And uh yeah, bird of
paradise, which has looked better, but I
mean it's a bird of paradise. They
always look kind of ratty when I have
them outside. Wind and everything. It
just it just shreds them to pieces.
Okay. I was going to pull it through
here. I started to pull it through
there. I was like, um, why? There's a
gate right here, dummy. I don't open it
that often cuz the security code on it
is glitchy. So, you open it and it just
beep beep beep beep. But I got it to
work out. There it is. Yeah. Got banged
up. You can see its newest leaf, which
is just big and beautiful.
That didn't do great with the storm we
had a couple of weeks ago. But this
plant really has done great. It's about
to trunk up, too. I think next year this
is going to have some trunk down there
at the bottom, which is pretty exciting.
That's what I love about those white
bird of paradise. You know, this is just
a $30 plant that was about 5t tall a few
years ago, and they get so big and so
full. And you don't really have to go
crazy.
Hold on. laughing because I for some
reason felt it was necessary to talk
through a burp. You don't have to repot
them all that often. They can stay in
the same containers for a very long time
and I just love that about them. All
right, here we go. Hey, here's an angle
y'all don't see all that often.
Yeah, just pretty much starting the
garden towards the back of this laurel.
Oh, it looks bad. Real bad. That's all
from last winter. Don't really see it
getting much better, but you know, is
what it is. can't do anything about it.
This one right here, they'll lift out
with the crane. I'm not going to try and
pull it out for them. Not there's no
reason to do that cuz they're going to
come in. They'll put a strap around it
and it'll pull right out for them. This
is just a little seedling and then a
weed that I had stuck in there. I should
not take this to go with the other
plants. I should get that weed out of
there. Need to move freckles, who I was
supposed to cut back. Need to do that.
Still have a few weeks left of nice warm
weather.
So, have to make that a priority, which
means I shouldn't move it very far to
keep it over here where it still stands
out. That's very obvious. I don't want
to tuck it away somewhere then end up
forgetting about it. Okay, bird of
paradise is out. So, now
guess I can clear the stuff out from the
front of
the queen palm. Again, there's really
not that much here. There's a planter
that had a fuchsia in it. Did not do
well with the drought. It just died. No
surprise there. Fuchsia don't like those
droughts. And these are just hanging
baskets. So, I should just be able to
lift these right out. These are going to
need to be cut way back. I think I'm
going to take them inside this winter
cuz why not? They're dragon wing bon.
Dragon wing beonas are so freaking
tough. They overwinter fairly easily,
but um they're pretty funky looking at
this point. So, they're going to get
drastic prune. And that's good. It
opened things back up for this fern. I
was having trouble getting to that fern.
What's going on with you? That's just a
bromeilad that's dried up. Finished its
flowering. It's done now. Have a ginger
down in here. I want to send that back
and hold on to the ginger.
I have the yang bromeilad that's in
here. And another little bromeilad
that's still got some color on it.
Going to hold on to that. H. Oh, there's
an orchid back here, too.
Felonopsis.
Pull that guy out. Oh, I did a lot of
growing. Got really full. And the
pseudaranthemums down there. There's
also a variegated banana in this
container.
Uh what is it? The
uh you know the aa or no musa Florida.
This is a sudaranthemum. No, I didn't do
gentle things with it. They're tough
plants. Right now, I'm just going to
nestle those roots down in some moist
soil that I have sitting in the cart
and get that potted up another time. I
don't know if I want to take the yang.
I'll take the yang. I could
go from the base. Don't know why I was
pulling it from the top. That was not
smart. Not how we're supposed to do
things. Here we go. All right. Yang. Is
this one yang or are those yang? I can't
remember. I have no idea. I see another
ped plant back here that I don't Oh,
you're not supposed to be there. Oh,
shoot. What's Okay, this is a yaka alloy
foia that it was on that wall back there
and when the palm tree got shifted, I
think that it hit the ground and
somebody picks up and just set it there,
which is not ideal cuz those need a lot
of sun. But that's all right. It's a
yaka. It'll be okay. Literally, the rest
of this is just, you know, boom. There
we go. They can get to the palm now. Oh,
kind of. I should probably do a better
job at clearing a path. Really hoping
that they can use the crane on that
thing tomorrow. What did I do with my
bubbles? My bubble water. Where's my
bubble water? Used to hate carbonated
water. But then I stopped drinking soda
and then a few months into I was like,
"Oh, I miss bubbles." So now I kind of
like it. Has to be ice cold, though. All
right, I'm going to mess around with
this guy for a little bit and see if I
can't get it out of there. Oh, it looks
so empty. I guess it really it doesn't
look that bad cuz there's still all this
going on over there. But remember,
tomorrow or in a several minutes in a
several h in a bit those palms won't be
there anymore. So that's going to going
to be bizarre. Be interesting to see how
the beonia behaves now it's not being
shrouded by the palm tree. Although I
have the windmill palm over here which
will go in place of that adinidia.
I'm going to be taking that, moving it
over here. The Royal Raindrops crab
apple that's going to come over here.
And then I have another what is it?
Prairie Fire crab apple that's going to
go over there. So, there going to be
some tall foliage, larger containers
over here. I think that's going to be
really nice throughout the rest of the
year. And I have whole bunch of
evergreens. I'd like to get some more to
keep piled into this area cuz I would
still like for this to be a nice
inviting space with or without the palm
trees. You know what I mean? the double
trunk looking pretty good. You can see
where it's got got some wonk to its
growth because the one side was up
against the house, but uh that's how
it's been the last what 3 years I
believe. It doesn't really seem to
affect it. In fact, I think it grows
better over here than it ever did over
here. It used to go right here, right in
between those two big blue pots where
the Chinese fan palms are. It would have
been right in the middle and it just
sort of sat still there, but since it
got moved over here, it's just been
loving life. really has been nice and
healthy. I pulled the pack of stackis
lutia out of this container. It's over
here and I figure I'll give it a cut
back and try and limp it along through
the winter time. They're pretty easy to
overwinter. I was thinking about maybe
doing the same thing here with the
shrianththees, the
what's the common name? Persian shields.
The Persian shields cuz they also they
overwinter so so so easily. And it's
going to be one of those things where
I'll go and I'll pot them up. Give them
a cut back. Pot them up. And if when I
move the plants inside, I really just
don't have room for some of these sorts
of things, then I just won't take them
in. I'll see if somebody else wants
them. I just really enjoy especially the
strobales. I enjoy them during the
winter time. I remember a few years ago
I had the masil basil and the strobales,
a whole bunch of things on the grow
shelves and they just did well. I didn't
have to do anything with them. They were
just nice, happy plants and I I enjoyed
that with them. Actually, I had to keep
them pruned quite often. I think that
was the same winter that I had um some
peppers grown in the grow space. What
were they? The really good ones, my
favorites. The publanos and pablanos
growing. They gave me really dinky
little publanos. But it was so fun.
Okay. Yeah. I don't I Are we done? I
guess so. other than I need to get that
edinity out of its container and popped
into a new pot.
And then uh that's really all that needs
to be done for tomorrow. I do feel like
I I really feel like I need to go in
there and pull those other palms out.
There's no reason to. For one, uh the
queen palm, if that's not leaning
against the house, it will fall over.
This does not stand up on its own. So,
there's not much reason to pull it out.
And the robelini,
well, I don't No, I just don't see a
reason to pull it out cuz it's probably
helping to keep the queen palm upright.
It would be nice to clean it up some. It
didn't have a great year. Next year
it'll be better. I have it up on drip
and I think I'm going to try and get a
bunch of the soil out of its container
and put in a different soil because I
know they repotted this one for me which
is very nice of them. Um I saw them do
it through the window. They did it on
their truck out in the street and it
looked like they were using stay green
potting mix. I could be wrong, but I
recognized that bag and I was like, uh,
it's not my favorite kind of it it
drains well and everything, but it's
like you're just planting something in
mulch essentially. That varies from
place to place. Some of y'all, I'm sure
it's a different case. It just depends
on where they're collecting your or
making your soil. But I don't know. All
the bags I've ever bought,
it it wasn't worth it once I did
something that drained real well and had
a moisture retention. A lot of moisture
retent. It's time to stop. I'm going to
work on this for a while. We'll come
back.
Yeah, that was intense.
It's never been that rooted into the
container before. Uh, here it is in all
of its glory. Like I said, I didn't see
a reason to bump it down a pot size this
time of year that doesn't make sense
next year. I'll do whatever kind of
prune is necessary to get it into a
container that'll fit into those pots,
and next year I won't have to deal with
the nightmare of getting them out again
or potting them back in again. It's
difficult, you know, because I have some
cinder blocks I keep to the bottom of
these pots. These pots are big, but
they're tall, so I have to worry about
blowing over. So, I have some broken
cinders that stay in the bottoms of
these. Uh, you may notice
Yeah,
that's how rooted in it was. I pulled
and I pulled and I pulled and somebody
else was sitting on top of the pot and
just cracked. But it was a very even and
clean
break. So, I'm not really all that upset
about it. It's unfortunate, but it could
be worse. This will just glue right back
in here. I've already picked it up and
set it in there, and it fits perfectly
snug. So, I just need to uh get a larger
amount of glue. I have some glue, but
it's not enough. And then just put well,
wash it down first. Add the glue to each
piece, set it in there, and just put a
strap around it. And done. Then the
container is fixed. And it still has a
nice view from the front, so you won't
really even be able to tell that it
cracked in the back. Could be way, way,
way worse. I do find it ironic though
that the whole reason I put all the
bricks and things in the bottom and I
make sure to use a really to use this as
a cach pot is because I don't want to
have to move these containers around cuz
I might break them and then
you know but that's the whole reason why
I want to get these bumped into plastic
pots or that other one bumped into a
plastic pot so that I wouldn't break it
anymore. Um and well I broke it. All
right, what's done is done. I also went
by the uh masonry yard and picked up
some stones. Aren't they pretty? They're
really pretty. Really nice shine to
them.
And I have some more down here. This is
it for the palm trees. Time to say
goodbye.
I don't know. I might film a little bit
tomorrow morning, but as far as I'm
concerned, we're done with the palms for
the year. You see them again next year.
Oh gosh, they're so big. These have
grown. So, well, this one I just got,
but this one's really got some good size
on. This thing is towering. It's got to
be 14 ft probably. Well, in the pot
probably about 14 ft. Okay. And then the
other rock I got is in here. And I just
tossed them down in there. Obviously,
I'm not going to leave them like that.
Need to actually level the space out and
put some sand and some gravel down and
everything so this is nice and even. And
I'm gonna put the rest of that stone
that you saw over in here. So there's a
path to slide the plants in and out of.
I can tell. Oh, stinking horns. Look at
the stinkhorns. Oh, they're so gross.
A very interesting fungus.
That's pretty cool. I'm going to do a
screenshot. Boom. Screenshotted it.
Fascinating fungus. I cracked a
seashell. Yeah, you get But I'm going to
play around with this so I now have a
smooth surface to move the plants in and
out of. And I'm going to put um a mesh
or something along the side of this burm
to help retain, you know, because it
just it'll just keep pouring down,
eroding down. Dang, you did not like
being exposed. It's used to having the
Robelini over. I did pull the Robelini
out. I don't really know why. Didn't
need to, but I did. I just felt like I
needed to do some more. They called.
They're coming tomorrow. They have the
crane. They also informed me that they
have a new queen palm for me, which is
amazing. We've been talking about this
one and how it just can't go over in
this spot anymore. And um they have owed
me a queen palm for a couple of years
cuz there used to be one on each side
here and one of them died during the
winter when they were storing it. Don't
know why that just I don't know that
just happens sometimes, I guess. Not
often with the queen pumps. They were
kind of confused by it, too. And but
they actually didn't owe me. It's a
courtesy. you sign something saying that
if a plant dies and too bad and they do
their best to not let that happen and
they don't just really I at least in my
experience anytime a plant has died
they've replaced it with something
they're very courteous in their regard
um but they didn't bring me the new palm
last year and then this year they've
never brought it and we shook on it
okay things happen but there's supposed
to be a queen palm on each side of this
step here and he says he's got a great
one that um it's smaller than that one
but it has like nice skinny trunk on it.
I'm like, "Oh, that sounds awesome." So,
that'll be here next year and it'll
either be right there. So, it'll be a
queen palm on each side, assuming that
one makes it through the winter. It's
been on the struggle bus this year, or
it'll go over here in place of this one
cuz it's smaller and more lightweight.
Sounds cool. He said he already has it
tagged with my name on it, so it's ready
to go.
All right, that's it.
Everything's done and ready. I'm going
to have to find some glue. See if I can
I'll try and do that tonight so the pot
can be dried up tomorrow cuz you know I
don't like having all the empty pots
around. Although it won't be this case
this year. Usually, you know, they come
and they take the palm trees and then
these two pots are empty and then those
pots are empty and these things are
empty. But I'm not having them take as
much as I have in years past. They're
still taking an awful lot. They're
taking 10 plants. That's a lot. But, uh,
I decided with these, I just I don't
want them to take them because these
will be good for quite a while. I would
imagine these will look good depending.
I mean, who knows what's going to
happen, but assuming we have a normal
fall, these could look good in here
until December.
I just don't want to take these apart
and disassemble them. I don't want to do
it. And I know that if I overwinter them
in the greenhouse, they'll come back
with only a few fronds, which is going
to be the same difference as if I
overwintered them here myself, right?
So, why pay to have that done? And also,
I don't know if I want this to be a
permanent thing out here. I really enjoy
them, but
they are a lot, like a lot. So, still
have plenty of time to get to enjoy
those. This is nice. I'm just more
relaxed than usual. Usually, I'm really
stressed out with the moving of the palm
trees. And a big part of that is these
gossia palms and the two edidas down
there. But since I had the one in the
casho, just popped right out. And I only
had one palm tree to struggle with. And
I'm not taking these out. At least not
right now. You know, like I said, I'll
probably try and take them in the house
or do something with them, I guess. But,
um, yeah, I mentioned I'm just not
really into these palm trees in these
containers anymore. It just I don't it's
just it doesn't do it for me. I love the
Gossia palms. I think they're very
interesting, but I think they look
pretty ratty in these containers. It's
just too much exposure for them and uh
they're too slow to grow. Uh, the
Alexander palms, it's also too much
exposure for them. I've tried them here
before. didn't really work all that well
cuz there was just too much sun, but the
trees have grown. So, that might be a
nice option. Uh, or I had mentioned in
the garden tour and a video prior to
that one about the strawberry vanilla
hydrangeanger trees, which there's one
there and there's one over there. I have
two in the front yard that aren't doing
great cuz they're not getting enough sun
anymore. Then I'd have hydranger trees
all the way around the pool. I would
miss that tropical aesthetic down here,
but I would also just love the
simplicity of not having to replant
things um in the springtime and just pop
some annuals all around the pool and
have that uniformity. I just I think
that would be nice. I don't know.
Whatever I do, I'm sure it'll be fun and
it'll look great next year. We can think
about all that stuff next year. I was
going to go ahead and get the windmill
palm slid over and moved into this spot,
but I think I should fit with that stone
some more tomorrow. and um just wait
until the palm trees are gone. Have more
of a clean slate to work with once the
big palms are gone and uh I can do
things with more intent cuz I'm sure
that this this whole vibe over here is
going to be different. I might want to
move some. I don't know. I don't know.
The pumps are going to go and we'll pick
up at some point tomorrow either before
they take them while they're taking
them. More than likely it'll be a little
bit before and then right after. So
there it is. Say goodbye to the palms.
I'm going to grab my pruners and try and
get this one cleaned up. It's
embarrassing. I don't want them to see
what happened to this one. To be fair,
everything that's brown on here was
going to be brown when they delivered.
Those were broken fronds from the
delivery. Um, but it's more that it
didn't grow that much this year. I
didn't have it up on drip and I just,
you know, I was like, it's a queen. It
can take it. And it could, but it would
have grown a lot more if I had watered
it more consistently. But I, you don't
have to cuz it's a queen palm, right? It
didn't need more consistent watering.
And I'm not trying to get this thing to
grow like a weed because then next thing
I know I'm going to have another jumbo
one like the one over there. I would
rather this one say scrawny and maybe a
little bit sad looking. Not the sad
looking part, but you know, not trying
to bulk it up to one of these. M What
was I about to say? One of these monster
palms over here. All right, that's
enough. That's enough. I've done enough
today.
Pick up later.
Well, this is interesting.
I just pulled this container out so I
could do some pruning on those two
broken fronds up there and uh a shrew v
shrew I don't know came flying out of
the bottom of the hole.
That might explain some of the growth
problems this year. I mean I was really
blaming myself thinking I guess I'm just
not watering it enough. But to be fair,
I was watering it the same as the
Robelini, the windmill, and the
Edinidias, and they didn't have an
issue. I just figured I was like, this
is really crummy soil. And I did skip it
occasionally because it's a queen palm,
and it doesn't necessarily need to be
watered as much as these other ones do.
Really, the edinity is in the windmill.
the robo lady and the queen can go more
on the dry side, but um that might have
something to do with some of the
problems. I think that it's quite
possible that there is a critter in
there chewing on the roots all summer.
So, good to know. Next year, uh flush
that out with peppermint oil, a diluted
peppermint oil, not full strength.
That'll keep them out of there. Probably
do that once a month, but that'll help
keep the critters from getting into the
pots. Mhm. Okay. Well, oops. Good to
know. Can I clean any of these off?
Probably not. I bet when it comes back
next year, though, I'll be able to snap
several of these off
this morning. Think they have seven of
the 10 plants on the truck. I went ahead
and I took everything out to the
driveway for them except for this guy,
the big Alexander that they're doing
next, I think. Or they're doing one of
the edenidas now, the one that was in
the landscape. And here's the queen.
What's left over?
Yeah. Look. Oh, I was going to pull this
lucasia out. Can I still get it out? Am
I going to just tear the I'm just going
to tear the bulb up. It can stay. It's
fine. Can try and get that out next
year. Here's our baby. I want to prune
it so bad. Look at how much of this
could go. Right. I could get these three
off. There's a new crown shaft. Not
really new crown shaft, but you know,
everything's down here. That'll bring
the base up to there. But next year, we
should be able to get clear trunk up to
about right there. But uh next year we
can do that next year. Have them lay it
down before it goes cuz it's going to go
in a different spot. We already talked
about that, right? Oh my goodness. Made
such a mess out here. Oh yeah, and
there's the crane.
There's a crane over my house right now.
When your house plant obsession
gets absolutely ridiculous and hard to
justify.
Hey. Hey. Hey.

Huh?
And they're going got a big old muddy
hole over here, which you know to be
expected. That palm tree was big. I
swear the crane could have reached it.
They pulled that out on their own. They
laid it down and then they wrapped the
thing. There was a video. You probably
saw it. And I really think the crane
would have reached, but it's okay. It's
not going to go there next year. It's
too much. I worry about people getting
hurt. Something smaller will be here. I
guess I could just pull the croen ford
and drop that in this spot. That's an
option. I'm not really looking to
completely rearrange the yard for the
next what
2 and 1/2 3 weeks until we have frost. I
don't want to do it. Well, I will be
doing some rearranging. Like I said, I'm
going to move the windmill. I was going
to move it over here, but I think it
would make a heck of a lot more sense to
put it right here, wouldn't it? And then
take the crab apple and put that on that
side step because it's so much harder to
get plants in and out of this spot right
here. The crab apple could stay out
there all year. And the windmill could
be right there. And it' be a lot easier
to move it in and out. And there's an
outlet over there. So it' be easier to
wrap it or something if we're going to
go just a little bit too cold for it.
And I can just wrap it up.
Huh. It's nice to have options. I don't
know. These are all things that I'm
going to think about for a day. I'm
going to probably wrap this up cuz I
still have to get everything edited and
put together and then cleaned. Hole over
here is pretty mucky. Have to put
something around that. I don't want my
nephew falling in there. Overall, even
though the palm trees are gone, it still
looks pretty freaking good out here. But
I've noticed I don't really get bummed
when they take the palm trees away
anymore because everything is become so
lush and looks so good.
See?
Still looks good. Looks very good and
colorful.
It actually it sometimes feels nice to
have them come and get the palm trees
cuz it's like, okay, we can go ahead and
kick off the fall season and start
prepping things in the garage. I don't
know. It's just become a seasonal mood
for me. It's also nice to have the palm
trees out of here a little bit earlier
than normal because I can show you guys
the garden what it look like without the
ridiculously large palm trees. You don't
have to have that. I mean, there's some
hearty bananas, some cannas,
collocacias, and then a row of
sunpatients, and just all that color
makes everything look beautiful. And
then, you know, you could just throw
like a couple like majesty palms in the
mix or something if you wanted to, if
you like those horrible things. In fact,
that's really the only reason that I'm
not jumping on top of rearranging like
the crab apples and those things down on
that end of the patio because everything
is still looking so beautiful and
tropical out here that I'm not quite
into fall winter mode. I've prepared
with the plants to go into that mode,
but I'm just not there yet. It's also,
you know, in the 80s and lower 90s and
just it doesn't feel like fall at all
and won't for probably another two weeks
at least. I don't know what the forecast
looks like two weeks ahead, but supposed
to say very, very, very warm. So, you
know, I don't know. I'm not jumping on
top of doing fall planters right now,
but I do think it would look good to get
a few things moved around over there. We
can start on that next week. Like, I got
to do a lot of cleaning first. I got to
clean up, then move plants around and
make a whole another mess and then clean
up. But if I do it right now, I'm just
going to be grinding all the dirt and
everything onto the patio. I already
have there's somebody over there with a
leaf blower. Uh helping with the dirt
and I'm going to go help them out with
that. So, I need to wrap this up. Hey,
thanks for hanging out. I had a good
time. Hope you did, too. It's a yearly
thing around here. Sending off the palm
trees. Some of y'all get sad about it.
I'm not sad about it. I like it. It just
signifies like moving on to the next
part of the year and those fun
activities that come with the next part
of the year like working in the grow
space and probably doing some
propagations and terrariums and uh maybe
some seed starting if I feel like
planting things I know I'm not going to
water them will just die water enough
you know the seeds they take so much
water I just I'm not good at it
frequency with the water that is but you
know and then the part of the year we
get to cut everything back and freshen
everything up with some soil or not soil
mulch I think it's compost So, compost,
mulch, you get it. Mulch to soil to
compost. There's some subtle
differences. By subtle differences, I
mean they're all of course totally
different things. Yeah. Okay. Hey, hope
everybody's doing well. Having a great
day, great life, and everything's just
going absolutely beautifully for you.
Comment down below what's going on your
yards. You starting your fall prep. Did
you get your crane to show up and take
your palm trees away yet? Oh, the view
over here is opened up very nicely. Can
see all the things, but Edinidia was
here and couldn't really see back there
all that well. This is where that
queen's going to go next year. right
here. Right there. I think that'll look
really nice. Yeah. Uh and hey, as always
and most importantly, everybody, keep on
growing. Bye bye.
