Today we build a set of 4 cuttign boards from the weirdest looking wood you can find (Louro Faia, Pearlwood, Lacewood) and hard Maple. I also injure myself lightly on my router table with the ultimate flush trim bit... Enjoy! =D
today i craft some beautiful cutting
boards from the world's weirdest looking
wood type and also underestimate the
power of my huge router bit
enjoy
sometimes you just have to try out
something new so for this project i
decided to use lugofire also known as
pearl or lacewood as the main body for a
set of cutting boards
why is it rather unusual to use this
wood you may ask
well
there's not much of it around to begin
with it's really hard to try and not a
bliss to work with but more importantly
it looks so weird a while that it
doesn't combine well with most wood
types
but i still wanted to break through the
barriers of modern woodworking
conventions and got to work
getting one side of my crook playing
flat
i went over to my planer and squared the
opposite side too
since logo fire is so incredibly unusual
in its crane texture and overall looks i
thought that maple might be the perfect
fit to calm the stormy seas of flemmi's
workshop
one side of the pearl wood was already
perfectly square so i just had to deal
with the other three on my sliding table
saw which always makes quick work of
those steps
perfectly square board
nice
next came a big rip cut giving us a fin
and a fixed strip of lace wood in
between these two we will next glue our
maple strip in
the glue up doesn't get any easier than
that really
only thing i added were a few drops of
c8 loot to assist the glue up and
lamping in those colder days
[Music]
next they rolled around and i proceeded
to flatten and present both sides using
my drum sander
then i divided the board up into four
equal partitions and cross cut along
those marks over my table saw
[Music]
[Music]
as for the shape i decided to use an old
breakfast board i created a while back
as a template
and after fixing everything in place i
went over to my router table and cut all
sides flush with the template using my
ultimate flush trim bit
[Music]
looking pretty good thus far
next i gave the shape a few final
touches on my disc sander and proceeded
to template route all other boards
and this is where i was not careful for
just a split second
[Music]
that seriously hurt atelier the
flushtrim bit is a real monster and has
a wide diameter the forces at play here
are gigantic at 16000 rpm and the whole
shock went into my finger
gladly i have huge hand and grip
strength and was able to hold the board
in place but let's be honest this could
have gone totally wrong
so always
always make sure to pay close attention
and never one stop using your safety pin
it stare for a reason
and after disaster struck i went back to
business as usual tempering all edges on
my router table sanding all the way up
from an 80 grit to 320 and buttering
that with my usual cutting board
finish
and i'm not gonna lie but those two wood
types go together really really well i
did honestly not expected
the shining purse of the luro fire are
gorgeous and the maple really calms the
wild texture of the cutting board
really a bliss to look at
