Food Shopping at a Hong Kong Supermarke

I am currently in Hong Kong at the moment, and I'm just about to explore a Hong Kong
supermarket.
It's called Yatta.
Let's go check it out.
Ooh, very boujee, very clean, very nice.
I'm already noticing that the trolleys are very different here, they're so small.
That might as well be a basket.
Look at these mushrooms.
I have no idea what this is, but it is interesting.
I think it's like fish balls.
The go-to veg selection.
I'm not really sure what this one is in the middle.
Giant mushroom and corn, and I think that's papaya.
This is the kind of cabbage you need to make kimchi with.
This is Chinese cabbage, and this is Japan cabbage.
Look at the difference.
I don't know how people hold this, it's so spiky.
Look how big the apples are here.
Look at the sizes of the drinks here.
How many milliliters is this?
Ours is what, 300?
500, it's double.
You can get milk tea in a can here.
I want to get milk tea packet to take back.
If I was milk tea, where would I be?
I was surprised I haven't seen a tea section yet.
Oh, it's here.
That worked out quite well.
Just go where the curiosity leads you.
It'll usually lead you to the right place.
This is Hong Kong afternoon tea, maybe I get this.
Or maybe I should get the matcha.
Cannot believe I was going to do this.
I'm going to get matcha and see what that's like, because I'm really into matcha now.
Double rich.
I don't want double rich, I need weak.
I'm nearing onto the end of the trip now, so the main reason I'm coming to the supermarket
is because I want to get snacks.
Usually when I ask loved ones, like, oh, what would you like?
A lot of times they say snacks.
I choose my friends well.
Look what my friend found.
I'm going to get this.
I think what this is, is like, you know, you get mini candies that you like, almost like,
it's like an experiment thing.
Oh, that's what I want.
I've seen videos of people trying these on TikTok.
Not sure what they are exactly, but have always been curious to try.
So basically you're provided with different packets of powder and they're labeled with
different things, which suggests that that's going to be the end result.
And all you have to do is add water and you should end up with a result that's similar
to what you see on the packaging.
I mean, that's a goal.
Whether it will actually turn out like that, we shall see, but Girly is going to try.
Oh my God, they got a panda one.
Oh my God, this is so good.
Look at the sushi one.
Look.
I'm going to get the panda one.
I'm going to get the burger one.
I have friends who have kids and I feel like this will be such a fun thing to do with them.
Actually, is this really for the kids or is this just for me?
Getting a bunch of these.
Do I have enough room in my luggage?
We shall see.
I thought I was going to get useful stuff.
I've never heard of this, but it's called dorayaki and it's two pancakes squished together
with some filling inside in the middle.
I feel like that could be a cool thing to try.
So I might get one of these.
But I've got to make sure I get the right filling.
Oh look, steamed cake with custard.
Oh, that looks like it'd be so good.
But then I feel like I should get the matcha one.
These are all red bean flavored and I don't like red bean.
There's no custard ones?
Oh no.
Okay, this is peach flavored, so maybe I'll get the peach flavored one and then matcha
custard.
Are these going to last in my luggage?
I don't know.
I'm getting matcha steamed cakes and peach pancakes.
Oh, how cute are these packagings though?
I'm such a sucker for all this packaging.
This is a lemon ball chocolate.
Gosh, I'm getting decision fatigue.
How do I decide which packet of crisps I should take?
I've got the hiccups as well.
That's great.
I want to get this just because it looks interesting.
This is called the demon super spicy.
There's so many options.
How does one decide which flavor to get?
This is so hard.
I think shrimp flavored crisps is the most popular, so let's find something like that.
Paella flavored potato chips.
I don't know for sure, but I think this brand, Calbee, might be really popular in Hong Kong,
so I'm going to get these as my crisp snacks.
Oh my God, I've got the hiccups so bad.
This is garlic and this is shrimp.
Look at the difference between my trolley and my friend's trolley.
Look how organized and nice my friend's trolley is, and then look at mine.
I think that's enough snacks.
I don't really have that much space in my luggage, to be honest.
I like looking at cereal that we recognize in the UK in different countries to see the
different kinds of packaging.
Obviously, these are just standard ones, but look at it, cornflakes.
British, but in Hong Kong.
One thing that could be good for me to bring is curry paste.
The food here is really good.
If I can get ready-made packets of curry paste, I can just put in a protein and use that packet
and have delicious meals without having to actually know how to cook them.
Thing is, I don't really know what I'm looking at.
Oh my God, guys.
Look what I found.
Of course, I come to the Big Beans Mall.
I wonder if it tastes different here.
I found all the paste, but I'm very overwhelmed because I don't know what any of this is.
I feel like some of this stuff would be so good.
Also, the chili here is so much hotter than the chili back at home.
This is chili shrimp sauce, and that sounds incredible.
Premium fresh chili.
Oh, these smell so good.
Packaging is so cute here.
Wow, they have a Pokemon one.
That one's really cute.
They've decorated the supermarket with just plants all the way around.
That's just for decorative purposes.
That's so cute.
One thing that I think is really cool here is that they have these food stores amongst
the supermarket.
I don't even know what this is.
We come to my favorite section, the bakery.
I love Asian bakeries.
There's something that they do that's very different from other bakeries around the world.
It's just much more soft and fluffier.
Big fan of the texture.
They had some savory things and some things I'd never seen before.
I wanted to get everything to try, but I just don't have the space in my luggage, and I'm
flying home quite soon.
So unfortunately, this time around, I will have to save this for another trip.
And that's it.
Look at all the packaging colors.
Overall, I would say it's been a really pleasant experience.
I don't know if this supermarket is one of the bougie supermarkets or if it's a regular
one they have here.
Because everything in Hong Kong is really clean and nice.
This one feels quite fancy, but I don't know if it is.
Very pleasant, very nice experience.
They have so many different products.
Very calm, lovely, relaxing.
I thought the pace of life in Hong Kong was very fast-paced and rushed, but I think they're
a lot calmer here than London.
I think London is way more intense.
People here are quite chill and calm.
It's just been really nice.
Possibly one of my favorite supermarkets I've been to.
We have to go somewhere else.
We're running out of time.
So we've got some quick, like, fast food.
The way they package food here is just so smart and so efficient.
Like, have you ever seen a drink bag like this?
There's two drinks in here.
I don't have to worry about spilling because look at it.
And also, these food spots are in the supermarket, which is also in a mall.
And guess where our hotel is?
In the mall.
So now we're going to go to the hotel and eat our burger meal.
I think that was a successful supermarket trip.
I had a great time.
My friend made a good point.
You can get away with going to places in Hong Kong without having to leave outside.
The tube station, the metro, is in the mall.
So you can technically get to another part of Hong Kong and not have to step outside once.
You just go through the mall, go to this metro, come out on another mall, get to your place.
Wild.
Got food from Mos Burger.
I don't know if that's, like, a popular common brand here.
It was just in a supermarket.
I'm curious to see what this is like.
They had some wild options there, but I would just like, have a plate, say.
It just looks a lot cleaner and happier.
I've noticed the food here, even the fast food, it doesn't feel greasy.
Oh, that's nice.
The bread is soft.
The fish is soft.
The mayo is, like, sweet.
Not sweet, but, like, good.
Honestly, the best way to describe food here is, like, soft and fluffy.
Even the fries are soft and fluffy.
Mmm, nicely salted.
You know what's funny?
The fries here, it tastes like potato.
You know McDonald's fries, they don't actually taste like potato.
They taste really-
They taste like salt.
I really like Mos Burger.
I would go there again.
I'm really happy.
Hello, hi.
Through the magic of editing, I have been transported back into my kitchen in London.
Just like that, baby.
If only the world actually worked like that.
In actuality, I was on a 14-hour flight, and I slept through nine hours of it.
That is unheard behavior from me.
I think Hong Kong changed me.
My sleep post-Hong Kong has been incredible.
I'm going off on a complete tangent, but you know what?
That's fine.
I am someone who has always struggled with sleep.
I used to have to listen to a podcast to fall asleep, and now it hits like 10pm, and my
body just naturally gets tired, and then I fall asleep very quickly.
And I'm only just now realizing that that's how people normally sleep.
Like that's the normal way people function, but I've just never functioned like that.
I say that as I'm about to eat a lot of sugar before bedtime, so that might mess up my sleep
schedule today.
Other good news is I have new It's Fine merch, and it currently looks like this.
I'm really happy with it.
I'm wearing the white hoodie version.
You can also get in black and grey, and in t-shirts and sweaters.
I love the red with the white.
It says It's Fine on the front, and then on the back, with a slow swivel, it says Everything
Is Fine, and one of them is like colored in.
I think this version is more like acceptance.
It's not always going to be perfect.
There's going to be ups.
There's going to be downs.
It's all about the ride, baby.
If you're riding that wave, and ultimately, everything is fine.
So yeah, if you vibe with that, if you're on this journey with me, feel free to check
out the merch in the link in the description.
I think you can also see the merch just below this video.
Definitely go check that out.
I have all my snacks in front of me.
In the store, I was like really happy and giddy and got excited.
Upon reflection, now that I'm looking at everything, I don't know if I went to a Chinese food market
or like a Japanese one.
I don't even know, but I feel like a lot of this is probably like Japanese snacks, which
I'm not complaining about, because I've also would like to try Japanese snacks, but I don't
actually know what I got.
Would someone like to educate me, because I don't really know.
Is this popular in Hong Kong?
I don't know.
I picked up a matcha packet from Hong Kong, made in Japan.
This is what happens when you're an uncultured swine and you go to a supermarket abroad and
you don't really know what you're doing, but you're happy and excited.
I'll come back with Japanese matcha, which I'm very excited to try.
I'm going to try that in the morning.
I just filmed this whole thing of trying out the matcha I got from Hong Kong, filmed it
all, went back to look at the footage and realized none of the sound was filming.
I still don't know why it wasn't recording.
I don't even know if it's recording right now.
We shall find out, because I haven't changed any of the settings, but I did just film all
this, so I'm going to give the review again.
This is a matcha that I'm trying out.
It says made in Japan on it.
That's like the only English on it.
So it looks pretty legit.
I was very excited about it, because as you guys know, I'm really into matcha at the moment,
so I was really excited to try matcha I got from Asia.
I will admit that this might be more of a skill issue than the product, because when
I made this, it was kind of a bit of a mess.
I'm a bit rusty.
This is the matcha I normally use.
It's Nami Matcha by the YouTuber Ashley, Your Mom Ashley, and it's really good.
This is the one I made now using this one.
The taste difference is quite noticeable.
Just doesn't taste all that great.
I can't really taste the matcha that much.
Ugh, I think this one was disappointing, but I will say, I did get the matcha from a supermarket.
I feel like if I went to a matcha store there, I probably would have got like way better
quality matcha.
So for a supermarket one, I still wouldn't even have it for a supermarket one, I'll be
honest with you.
I'd rather just pay extra and get like a better quality matcha.
I'm just not feeling this one.
I'm really not.
Next time, I will go to a place that does like high quality, good matcha, and then I'll
test that out.
I got so excited when I saw these at the supermarket, because I've always wanted to try them.
This is a sushi one, particularly like the fish eggs, and I'm really curious to see
what this texture's like.
Now my understanding is that this is supposed to taste like the food.
Really curious about that.
Oh, I must say, the packaging is so stinking cute.
Rice candy powder, there's two types of salmon roe, there's tuna candy powder, omelette candy
powder, we've got soy sauce candy powder, and we have seaweed candy powder.
So all you do is add water to it.
This is some really cool kids' science kit project thing, and I'm very much obsessed
with it.
We're starting off with blue, and that's going on this one.
I need to put a little bit of water in the oval, so we're going to put all of it in.
Oh, it smells very chemically, I must say.
Okay, so if I just mix this up now, it should turn into rice.
I have no idea how this is going to turn into rice, but that's what they say.
Oh wow, the smell is so strong.
It doesn't smell like rice.
So basically I'm going to put the powder in now, and I'm going to stir it and let it set.
And the shape at the bottom is going to print onto the mixture, and that's what's going
to make it look like an omelette.
They're so smart.
So I have my two balls of seaweed, and I have to basically roll them out so that it looks
like sushi.
Now I have to make the salmon roe.
So this is the one that's super interesting to me.
We're going to make little fish eggs.
Got a bit of seaweed in that one.
This is the exciting part.
This is the whole reason I wanted to get this one particular kit.
It's time to make the fish eggs.
So what you do is you pick some up with the pipette, and then you go drop it three centimetres
above, and it just turns it into fish eggs.
It's really cool and really weird.
Why is that the cutest thing I've ever seen?
I'm not sure how I'm going to scoop all this out.
I haven't really thought that far ahead.
And that's it.
That's the final one.
My sushi is ready.
Oh my god, look at it.
I have to flip it over when I put it on top, which I've done a great job of.
There we go.
Wow, you can see the shape and the texture on it.
I think I put too much water in this one.
Look at that.
That's just not done what it's supposed to do.
Wow, that is so sad.
The tuna one is a massive fail.
Hopefully I can make up for it with the salmon roe.
I have to go all the way around.
And I broke it.
Oh, this is actually a lot harder than it looks, guys.
Oh no, this is just like all falling apart.
And then somehow, I don't think this is going to work, but I've got to put the fish balls.
Oh my god, look at that.
That is so, so good.
Let's put some eggs on my sushi.
Holy smokes, that one looks legit.
I mean, it's all falling apart, but that's fine.
Wow, I love my little fish eggs.
Okay, the omelette worked well.
I think I just put way too much water.
Oh gosh, or the tuna one.
I don't even know if it's worth trying again.
Nope, the tuna one is such a fail.
This one wrapped around a lot nicer.
So stinking cute.
I'm obsessed.
Let's get some fish eggs on it.
Stop.
Oh my god, my shiwa.
So cute.
This is the end result.
My mini sushis.
Some worked out better than others.
I don't know if we're meant to eat these or not.
They don't smell edible.
Let me just try and see.
Tastes like sweets.
Also chemically.
I like the fish eggs, but I just don't know if I'm meant to be eating the fish eggs.
Okay, I swallowed it, so if I wasn't meant to eat it, my bad.
It's done now.
The fish eggs taste really nice.
Really sweet.
I'm getting those everywhere now.
Oh, I forgot my soy sauce.
The whole thing was falling apart.
I don't think we had time for soy sauce.
I love the poppin' cooking set.
They're exactly what I expected them to be and so much more.
They're so fun.
I'm really glad I tried it out.
I still have this one to go, so I'll do that another time.
But I would give these a 10 out of 10 for fun.
In terms of application, I think that's a skill issue.
I think that's more on me.
And taste-wise, it did taste sweet.
Again, I'm not sure if I'm supposed to eat them.
It doesn't show any pictures of people eating them.
I'm just making them, so I don't know.
Great.
Love them.
10 out of 10.
Would do again.
Lovely vibe.
Ooh, this one looks cool.
It's lemon and chocolate.
I feel like I'm gonna like these.
Ooh.
That smells like something I've not had before.
So that's a strong start.
It's white chocolate, but like lemon flavoured.
Very smooth.
That is not what I was expecting the texture to be like.
It's got a thick white chocolate with a hint of lemon coating.
It's a lot thicker than I thought.
And then there's a gummy sweet in the middle.
But the gummy sweet is like rubber.
It's like really tough.
It feels like you're chewing on a bouncy ball.
I don't know about the texture of the gummy, to be honest.
That thing is like really hard.
It almost feels like two very different things.
Because when you bite into it, all the chocolate just crumbles apart.
And then you're left with the rubber stuff.
I don't know if they work so well together.
But I do like the taste.
It's not too lemony.
It actually goes quite well.
It's just a rubber sweet.
Sorry.
Gummy sweet.
That's throwing me off.
Next one I want to try is the Kit Kat Matcha.
Very curious about this.
We are very late on trends in the UK.
Now, matcha is like a huge thing here.
It's been a big thing on that side of the world for like years.
Is it green?
It is green.
Ooh.
It smells sweet.
For some reason, I thought it was going to smell like grass.
That is the tiniest Kit Kat part I've ever seen.
They've taken fun size to a whole other level now.
A bit underwhelming, to be honest.
It tastes like a normal Kit Kat.
But every now and again, there is this like weird earthy taste to it.
It's not strong.
But it does have little hints of that come through every now and again.
Ooh.
Sometimes it's really not nice.
Why does my mouth burn?
Honestly, I think matcha should just be for the drinks.
They have everything matcha flavored over there.
I just don't think that's for me.
Oh, I say that.
I bought matcha steamed cake.
Because I was like, when in Hong Kong?
Even though it said Japan on the packaging.
We'll ignore that.
It's fine.
I can't even open it.
Asian pastries are a lot soft and fluffier.
And I do like that texture a lot.
And this steamed bun is in fact very soft and fluffy.
I'm already a fan.
And then I smelt it.
I have a love-hate relationship with matcha.
I think I should just not smell it.
I do think matcha's an acquired taste.
And I haven't fully acquired it.
This isn't bad.
But I'm not like running to the shelf to get it.
It's not my main favorite flavor of choice.
When it's not in drink form.
I much prefer this to the Kit Kat, 100%.
But do I like it because of the texture?
It's sweet.
It's a soft, sweet cake.
I think I would just go for a different flavor.
Like vanilla or something.
Or strawberry.
Because I thought I would feel this way,
I also got these pancakes.
But this one has peach filling.
Oh my god, why is my mouth burning?
Why is my throat on fire?
I don't even know what that noise was.
You know what?
Everything is fine.
As I always say,
everything is fine.
This is called dorayaki.
I said that with such confidence,
I don't actually know if that's how you say it.
It looks like a jaffa cake.
But basically there's two pancakes
squished together with a filling inside.
It smells like a normal, regular pancake.
That's very underwhelming.
It's not as soft and fluffy as the matcha cake.
Honestly, there's not much happening.
It tastes like a regular pancake.
I cannot taste the filling at all.
And the filling isn't soft.
It's like congealed together.
It's like hardened.
Not super excited about that.
God, we're not doing well.
We're really not doing well.
Let's go on to crisps.
Which is my favourite kind of snack.
I am a savoury gal.
And I'm going to guess
through the power of visuals.
Because I can't read the language.
This one's garlicky.
Considering my throat is on fire right now,
this is 100% the right decision to make.
Whoa!
I don't know what that sound was.
That's very garlicky.
I wish you could smell this.
It almost makes your eyes water.
That's like a strip of garlic.
I feel like half the taste for me
is in the texture.
I love this texture of crisps.
And I was right.
That's really flavourful.
That's really good.
I don't know...
I was going to say I don't know
if I can get through a whole bag of this.
I had to stop myself
because I feel like I really could.
You know what?
It's exactly what they've shown on the package.
It tastes like a corn puff.
A crunchy one with lots of garlic.
It's great.
I love the texture.
I don't know any British crisps
that would remind me of this actually.
I think this is something
we don't have in the UK.
Really good.
Oh, and this is prawn crackers.
I love prawn crackers.
Oh, it's quite strong.
That is very different
to what I was expecting.
These are actually quite spicy.
As you guys know,
I really like spicy food.
And I thought I was quite good
at handling spice.
But the spice in Hong Kong
is on a whole nother level.
They're like drinking
radioactive spice levels.
I don't even know
if this is meant to be spicy.
Like for them,
this could be just a regular snack
but I'm finding it quite spicy.
I don't think I would have
instinctively thought
this is prawn flavoured.
It tastes more like paprika.
Oh, it's Thai seafood salad flavour.
That makes more sense.
So it tastes like this.
The crisps I would give
like a solid 8 to 9 out of 10.
They're very, very good.
And again,
I have never come across
Thai seafood salad flavoured crisps.
I mean, we had Thai sweet chilli.
Oh, is this like
the Thai sweet chilli one?
No.
It tastes a bit different.
This one's a bit more like potato-y.
That's all the snacks.
Oh.
And that's all the snacks
I got from Hong Kong.
Oh, no, no, no.
And then we're gonna finish it off
with some gum.
Or maybe it's not gum.
I don't even know.
In that store,
I was just picking up random stuff.
Ooh, it's a little sweet.
So cute.
A little candy.
Macy said this is the last one
to try.
Ooh.
It smells like
how you imagine
a great candy to smell.
I want this in a candle.
It's very sweet.
Very light.
Or quite hard, actually.
Chewing this is actually
genuinely a workout.
I just gave a big sigh
because it feels like
a proper jaw workout.
I do like all the mixed fruits in it.
In your mouth,
you are going through
lots of different flavours.
I don't like the fact
that the candy
doesn't, like, chew together.
It, like, kind of breaks apart.
It's quite hard to eat.
I'm not a fan of that.
This one says UHA Hong Kong,
so I think this one might be
the only thing that I got
that's actually Hong Kong.
My bad.
Flavour-wise,
I'd give it an 8 out of 10.
Texture, eating-wise,
like a 2 out of 10.
What's going on?
Is that going to fall
in a part of my mouth?
I'm scared that's a little bit
I'm going to, like, choke on.
It's also really stuck
in my teeth.
The eating experience
isn't pleasant,
but the flavour experience
is not bad.
I feel tired now
after eating one gummy sweet.
And that has been me
trying the snacks I got
from a supermarket in Hong Kong.
Was it a Hong Kong supermarket?
Or was it a supermarket
in Hong Kong?
Let me know
in the comment section below.
This has been fun.
I really like the supermarket.
It was definitely
a very different experience.
Very clean and very organised.
I'd rather assume
all kids could live.
That has been this video.
I hope you guys enjoyed
coming along with me.
I hope you guys enjoyed this video.
Do check out merch.
Link is in the description.
Other than that,
thank you so much for watching.
I love you lots.
Please know you matter
and I shall see you guys next time.
Thanks for watching.
Bye!
