Hi everyone! Today, we're diving into the world of homemade fermentation by learning how to
prepare a ginger bug, the essential starter for making delicious ginger beer. Let's get started!
First, you'll need about 2-3 tablespoons of freshly grated or finely chopped ginger.
Organic ginger is best since it often has more natural yeast on its skin,
but any ginger will do. No need to peel it, just give it a rinse if it's dirty.
Place your ginger into a clean glass jar. To this, add 2 tablespoons of sugar and 2
cups of filtered or non-chlorinated water. Stir it well to dissolve the sugar. This is
the foundation of your ginger bug. Cover the jar with a breathable cloth and secure it with a
rubber band. This allows air to flow in while keeping out any dust or pests. Place it in a
warm spot, out of direct sunlight. Every day, you'll need to feed your ginger bug to keep it
alive and fermenting. Add another tablespoon of grated ginger and 1 tablespoon of sugar and give
it a good stir. You'll notice small bubbles forming, which is a sign of active fermentation.
After 5-7 days of daily feeding, your ginger bug will be ready. You'll know it's ready when it's
bubbly, smells pleasantly gingery, and you hear a slight fizz when you stir it.
Now it's time to use it to make ginger beer! To prepare ginger beer, strain out about half a cup
of the liquid from your ginger bug and mix it with 4 cups of water, the juice of 1 lemon,
and about half a cup of sugar. You can also add extra grated ginger for a stronger flavor.
Pour the mixture into glass bottles, leaving a bit of space at the top. Seal the bottles tightly
and let them ferment at room temperature for 2-3 days. This is when the magic happens. The yeast
in the ginger bug will eat the sugar, creating carbonation. Check your bottles daily to prevent
too much pressure from building up. When they're fizzy to your liking, pop them in the fridge to
slow the fermentation. And there you have it! Refreshing, fizzy ginger beer! Ginger beer isn't
just delicious, it also has great health benefits. It's packed with probiotics that support gut
health, and ginger itself can help with digestion, reduce nausea, and even boost your immune system.
Ginger beer originated in England in the 18th century and quickly became a popular beverage
worldwide. Back then it was even slightly alcoholic. But modern versions are often
non-alcoholic, making them a family-friendly treat. That's how you make a ginger bug and
transform it into delicious homemade ginger beer. If you found this video helpful, give it a thumbs
