A little over a year ago, we published a video showing "How To Plant A Container Grown Rose". In that video we featured a NEW and exciting rose variety called Rose True Bloom™ True Passion.
Now in this video David updates us with the progress of the young specimen he planted in the "How to" video .... Join him in our "no spray" rose trial area and see how it fared! Discover how it produces an endless supply of sumptuous, large salmon-red flowers right through the whole growing season, and best of all, how its SUPERIOR disease resistance means you can enjoy growing it here in our region without the need for spraying with chemicals!!!! Then look for it at Hand Picked For You® participating garden centers across the Northeastern and Mid-Atlantic States of the USA. This locator link: https://www.grownbyoverdevest.com/ret... will help you find garden centers in our region that carry our plants.
Well, hello and welcome to the trial gardens here
at Over-the-Vest Nurseries. This is a busy commercial nursery
lots going on, including testing and trialing
of new varieties. And about a year or so ago I made a video
showing you how to transplant a container grown rose.
Now at that time I was using a variety called True Bloom
True Passion. It was a small plant at that time
grown in a two-gallon pot. And I want to give you an update now
about 15 months or so later to show you what has happened to that plant.
And here it is. What an amazing amount of performance this plant has put on.
It's been in flower now for the whole of the summer
and now as we enter early autumn and getting towards the
end of the growing season, I wanted to show you a couple of things.
First of all, look at the foliage on this plant and remember that this has never
been sprayed.
This is what we call our no-spray trial
where we plant out various varieties of roses
to see how they would do in a garden situation
without any form of spraying. Now I was in my early horticultural education
taught to spray roses every 10 days. Get the chemicals out and spray them on there.
And I tell you, that's something I really don't want to do and I think it's
something you don't want to do either.
So finding a variety like this that has grown through the whole of the season
and remained remarkably clean. Look at these leaves on here
really shiny and dark green
and not a smidge of disease on there. That's what makes this variety remarkable.
Also the fact that this has been flowering
from the early summer all the way through
until now. It's not looking at its best. A couple of weeks ago
it was absolutely gorgeous, just loaded with flowers.
And so you're seeing it here in its reality
and it's not at its peak time, but you can imagine I think
how this would look in your garden. And as you see
it's really very colorful, producing lots
of these really quite large semi-double flowers
that put on a terrific eye-catching display.
And in addition to that, it also has very attractive young growth too.
As you see it comes out with this burgundy red color
to really accentuate the gorgeous color
of the flowers. Now unlike many other varieties that set rose hips
what's really neat about this variety is
that it appears to be almost sterile. In looking at the plant over four years
I've only seen hips on it once, and that was only just a few.
What happens is when the flowers are going over, the petals fall off
and then it has hips left
but they don't form seed. Instead they're like this one, they turn a yellowish
brown color
and eventually as they go through life they're like this one
that's totally brown and then falls off. Meanwhile the plant is growing out and
making flower buds like this here
and that's why it keeps on flowering through the season.
Great because you get this continuation of flowering
and also of course much less work, because you don't have to go through
and deadhead the plant. And also I should point out
that because it's such a nice vigorous grower
this plant is growing on its own roots. Unlike
a lot of other roses that are budded and grafted
this one is vigorous enough to grow on its own roots
and therefore you don't need to worry about troublesome rose suckers either.
And even though it isn't at its peak
this is a good time to give you the update, a good time to compare it
with other varieties, because with the heat of the summer
the drought stresses and particularly the effects of debilitating diseases like
black spot and mildew
often at this time of year if they haven't been sprayed
they're totally defoliated and looking really ugly.
Look at this in comparison
strong and healthy, lots of vigorous
bright green healthy foliage, lots of new buds coming on
it's been flowering for weeks and weeks
and weeks without any care and attention.
That's what makes this such a remarkable variety.
So there you are, that's why I wanted to give you an update
on the development of what happens to a rose when you buy the right variety
when you get one that's been trialed and tested
and is a product of a world-class breeding program
and you work with your local garden center to make sure
that it's right for your conditions and the zone that you live in.
We certainly here, after four to five years of testing this variety
can really recommend this
True Bloom True Passion, it's a fantastic variety
and if you'd like to find out even more about it
check out some of the other videos on this channel
we've published lots of information about it over the years
and we think that it's one that you'll really enjoy growing
in your garden.
This is David Wilson, enjoy your gardening
