Hi, this video is going to be all about how to make your own bowstring and I'm going to try to
explain and tell as much as I can about how to make it and how to get the right strength of the
string and how to get the right height and what not to use and everything. Everything you need
to know about how to make your own bowstring is going to be in this video. I'm just going to use
something we call garden string here or kitchen string. The bow I'm making is going to be a 40
pound bow and the rule is that the bowstring need to be at least four times stronger than the bow.
So I need to make a bowstring that is at least around 160 pounds and I estimate this thin
string I have here is going to hold for maybe 30 pounds. So I'm going to take this thin string
five times so then I get up to 150 pounds and I think that should be enough for this bow.
Here I'm just curious, I'd like to see how long the string is going to be and what width you're
going to have on the bow later. That's why I spin it up like that and here I'm going to tie a bowline
knot and the end with the bowline knot is of course that end I'm going to release from the
later on the bow so the bow can relax when I'm not using it. Here you can see how I have made
the knot for the string it's just two cuts one on each side of the limb at a 90 degree angle
and there's no need to be anything more complicated than that it's just going to keep the string in
place. Okay so now I have a bowstring that can handle 150 pounds and I have tied one bowline knot
in one end and I have touched the other end of the string to the bow with a double half hitch
and now I'm spinning the bowstring to regulate the height you're going to have. So the more I'm
spinning it the shorter the string is going to be. I think these kind of simple bows have some kind
of beauty in them in its simplicity and they are not made to look pretty or anything they're just
made for shooting arrows like a tool that is made for shooting arrows and nothing else
and I think there's some kind of beauty in that.
