2 years ago, Gavin quit baseball. He finished off his last season of city league (little league) and said he was done with baseball for good. He said we could get rid of all his baseball stuff so that's what we did! Then his friends talked him into playing this year - his 8th grade year and last year of middle school. So he decided last minute to do it and go to tryouts. Obviously a lot changes in baseball from Age 12 to age 14! He did good at tryouts and made the middle school team. But he was a little overwhelmed at how much the game changed in those 2 years. They play on a bigger field (further distance between bases) and the pitching is a lot better (faster and more movement on the ball). And Gavin has NEVER had baseball lessons. He's always played for fun. So no surpise Gavin struggled early on in the season. He looked uncomfortable at the plate and his swing wasn't where it needed to be. After a couple of games, we got Gavin a hitting lesson and his swing drastically improved! He was able to finish off the season as a much improved hitter and player. However, Gavin doesn't LOVE baseball and doesn't want to put forth the extra effort that is needed to be successful at it in high school. His love is football and that's where he wants to spend his time and energy. So we say a final goodbye to Baseball for Gavin. It's been fun! But time to move on.

[Applause]
Well, baseball season is here and we've
actually already started baseball
season. So, we have two playing this
time. Gavin decided to give it a try
again, but it has been two years since
the boy has played baseball. And going
from youth to now an eighth grader, a
lot has changed in baseball. The ball is
obviously coming a lot faster, a lot
harder, and the bases, he's on the big
bases now, so there's a lot more
distance to run, to throw infield, all
that's different. And so since he
literally didn't touch the ball, didn't
swing a bat, we actually sold all of his
stuff because he said, "I'm done with
baseball." And then he decided he was
going to play, have somebody that he
wanted to play with. So he's back
playing. It's a big leap, right? So
anyways, he's been struggling a little
bit. I mean, look, the kid's athletic,
but he just doesn't have that baseball
skill that he kind of used to have as a
younger. And even when he was younger,
we never really got him lessons. He He's
never really had a lessons. Colin, he
loved baseball, and so we continued to
get him lessons cuz he wanted to get
better and improve. Gavin, it was just
kind of a spring sport to do. We are now
getting a lesson. So, he's about to get
a lesson with one of the local hitting
coaches around here. One actually Colin
got a lot of improvement from last year.
But really excited about Gavin cuz
Gavin's swing, it's pretty rough. He's
kind of stiff up there. He's obviously
very nervous cuz he hadn't played in a
while and just his swing, his technique,
it's just it's just not there. So, I
really think we'll see a lot of
improvement from Gavin. But again, look,
baseball season, it's about them just
having fun. Continue to work on
teamwork. Continue to work on skills and
abilities and just get out there and
improve. Let's go in here. Let's get
some lessons. Let's get better today.
>> Backwards.
>> You're going to throw
>> you a sister, huh? sister cuz you hit
like
how you go.
Are you going to go back and punch? Do
you not?
>> I mean, yeah, I guess. But
>> I'm asking you question. You tell me.
>> Depends.
>> Depends on what how you going to throw
punch.
>> If I'm going for the knockout, I'll lean
back.
>> Okay. So, I'm going to hit this ball.
Why am I going to hit this ball like
this?
Go backwards. Am I generating power? How
do I generate power? and the legs.
>> How? Load. Now punch it.
>> Okay. Watch.
You're doing this going backwards.
All right. Before I give you this bat,
what hand swings the bat? Is
>> this your little brother? Is that
>> the first hand?
>> Oh, no. You tell me. I know the answer.
>> This hand.
>> What hand is that?
>> My like the bottom hand. Sure about
that?
>> Mhm.
>> Play golf.
>> Uh sometimes.
>> Yeah. That's a golf swing.
>> So your brother
>> top hand. Top hand. Okay. So what hands?
Before I get this, you turn it right.
>> Back hand.
>> Sure. No, it's not called backand
>> or the top hand.
>> Now look, we don't hit like this.
>> You ready?
[Music]
>> We hit like that. Mhm.
>> Okay. Don't hit me.
No. Look, you're turning. You're going.
So, this that's bottom hand.
>> If I'm going to hit the back, the ball
with the top hand, how would I do it?
No. See, look. You're doing that. Mhm.
>> If I'm going to hit with the top hand,
I'm going to do that. Hold this hand
loose. Pull it loose. Now, swing with
your top hand. Yeah. Yeah. Now, load up
with your lower half. Now, hit it with
your top hand. Go ahead. Show me. Too
close. You're going to roll over. There
you go.
Watch me.
Look at my feet. Look.
See that?
>> Not the Not this.
>> All right. So, you were taught the kid
to squeeze the bug, right? Squeeze the
bug. You don't know.
>> I just You weren't listening, were you?
>> Hey, here we go.
>> Punch it with your top hand.
There you go.
Now, now your brother should touch you
this. Try to hit that part of the ball
with the back.
>> Hit on top.
[Music]
You see that gap right there on the
screen? See the screen and there's a
little gap right there. I want you to
hit every ball right there.
>> Show me how to do it.
>> Do it. What do I have to do? Keep my
hand. Ah. With what hand though?
>> Top hand.
>> Very good.
Look at
>> that.
[Music]
>> They must have taught you tennis, huh?
>> I mean,
>> he never really ever got lessons like
Colin did. He just kind of always played
for fun, but never really took it
seriously and now it shows.
>> Are you serious about baseball or not? I
mean,
>> is this a hobby or is this something you
want to get good at?
>> I'd like to get good at it.
>> See my office right here? You see my
door right there?
>> Yeah.
>> Try to hit this ball right there.
>> Keep your hand inside. See that? Watch.
Then go get it.
>> See that? Watch this.
>> See that?
>> Yes. Here we go.
[Applause]
Again,
spin.
What do I do with you the first time?
Just leave the bat right there on your
shoulder. Okay.
Now load
[Applause]
your turn.
[Applause]
>> Yeah. So Gavin actually before the
season started, he hadn't touched a ball
or swung a bat in two years.
And then kind of some friends kind of
talked to him and he's like, "You know
what? Yeah, I'll give it a try again."
Like I said, we've never really had
lessons with him, so he's never really
had great technique.
>> Hugo to second base. Where's second
base?
>> Keep going. No, that's
>> or like the second basement or the
second base.
>> Second basement.
>> Okay. When
>> we say hog second, we think about the
second base.
>> Okay. So, like right there offices. Mhm.
>> That's second basement. Hit it right to
that guy.
What hand strikes the bottom?
>> Top.
>> Are you the smart one on the family?
>> No.
>> Oh, really?
>> IQ smart.
>> IQ smart. Oh, sorry.
>> IQ. He's
>> IQ. Are you math?
>> He's got like low IQ.
>> You good math?
>> Pretty good.
>> Geometry. Good. Okay. Which crooked way
between two points?
>> Uh, like the hypotenuse? I don't know.
>> Which crooked way between two points?
I'm going to go for point
>> direct line.
>> Straight line. Right. So when you swing,
why are you going down and down? That's
not straight line. So what's a straight
line? Straight to the ball.
>> So put the bat on your shoulder and go
straight to the ball.
>> Yes.
>> There we go. Load. Straight to the ball.
Nice. Now let your back foot look. Let
your back foot come up. Yes. Don't twist
it. Just let it come up. Load straight
to it. Very good. Straight to the ball.
That was pretty good.
[Music]
>> Right there. I want you to hit that ball
right off.
>> This has got to release there.
[Music]
I'm getting somewhere. I'm good.
[Music]
All right. Now do the same thing with
that ball.
How about that?
>> Stay with Stay like you are.
>> Go get it. Go get it. Don't stop. Come
on. Just like the high te.
Okay. Now watch. You ready?
[Applause]
Holy crap.
[Applause]
Good hit.
Okay.
Here we go.
Very nice.
Got
a boy.
Oh.
>> Yeah, that will be a jump scare.
There we go.
>> Yeah,
[Music]
[Applause]
[Music]
>> that's a good end.
[Applause]
[Applause]
Got to go. You got to go.
Stay there. Go.
>> Come on. Come on.
>> Come on.
Go
out
Keep
>> going.
[Applause]
[Music]
Down
to go forward.
>> Got to get down.
[Applause]
[Applause]
What are we doing?
>> A boy, Gav,
>> tournament champs. What a boy. Alex City
Middle.
>> Yeah.
>> All right. Down.
