I Ate STREET FOOD in VIETNAM!! (Best Food in Hai Phong) 🇻🇳
Man, I'll tell you what.
Haiphong is a bustling little city.
I did not expect it to be this busy.
Grilling it up right here. What is she making?
What's she making?
Xin chào. Yay!
Oh, we got some chicken feet.
Yeah, man. You need some?
But we also have some sausage, maybe.
Chicken.
What are you getting?
Yeah?
What are you getting?
Yeah?
The chicken feet?
It actually don't look that bad.
Wow, looks good.
And the beautiful girl, too. You're right.
Beautiful girl, beautiful meat.
What would you like to eat?
I'll try just a taste.
Can I have one?
One?
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Would you like a chicken thigh?
Nah, just a small bite.
I want to eat many places.
So a little bit here, a little bit there.
But those do look good, man.
Do you want to try bánh mì?
What is this?
Bánh mì.
Oh, bánh mì, man. I want to...
That does look good.
Where did you get that?
Here? She makes this?
I want that.
I want that, yeah.
A nice, hot, grilled bánh mì chicken sandwich.
Yeah, it has my name written all over it.
Oh, yeah.
And then she just stuffs them right on the bun.
Do you try vegetables in...
Sure.
Yeah.
Whatever you think is best.
I'm guessing this would be like the original.
And I like it, too.
I guess this is her shop right here.
And so instead of having the kitchen
like in the back of the restaurant,
they're right out here on the street.
And then you get your food here and then you go inside.
I love it.
Come on. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
Cheers.
This is what I'm talking about.
These are the kind of bánh mì that I was looking forward to.
Like street food.
Man, simple, but it's going to be freaking delicious.
Veggies nice and crunchy.
Chili.
Got a nice little chili kick to it.
Best bánh mì I've had so far.
I don't think I'm ready for dessert, but
this looks like chín đồ.
Kind of looks like bingsu, like the traditional style.
But more like chín đồ.
I'll try it.
Look at that.
So, yeah, sure enough, the tofu, more jellies.
I'm sure a lot of sweetness in there.
And yeah, just crushed ice.
So it kind of reminds me of chín đồ in Indonesia or Malaysia,
which is really good, too.
I don't know if it's as good as bingsu, but
I like tofu like this.
I like dessert tofu.
But this is good.
Not too sweet.
Mm, doesn't that look good?
I'm sure some of you, maybe some people back home are like, ew, no, but
people on this side of the world looking at this probably thinking,
yeah, that's a good one.
Mm, and it kind of reminds me of, what's it called?
There's a tofu drink in the Philippines, too, that they serve on the beach.
Yeah, I don't think these kind of desserts would do very well in the States, but
here, kind of an acquired taste, I guess.
Yeah, that took me all of two seconds to finish.
That was good.
Okay, food tour continues.
I'm impressed with Haiphong so far.
Whew, I'm gone.
Thank you.
Whew, I love it.
I love the people just chilling outside.
It was definitely one of those countries.
People sitting in these tiny little chairs, enjoying themselves outside.
I love it.
I see smoke arising from a big pot.
Ooh, I think that's what I had in Hanoi my first night.
Yep, yep, yep, hi.
Those look pretty good, too, man.
A lot of people here.
Yeah, I'm gonna give those another try.
Let's do it.
She's a machine right here.
She is just whipping them out.
Okay.
This lady kind of reminds me of the soup congee in Seinfeld.
You've ever seen that show?
I don't want to screw up the order.
It's kind of intimidating.
All right, so this is called Banh Cuon, and yes, this is my second time trying it.
But I think this one's gonna be a little bit better just based on the atmosphere.
This lady cooking them up.
She's intense.
She is very intense.
I mean, she runs a tight ship, let me tell you.
But yeah, excited to try this.
Inside is ground pork, mushrooms covered in shallots, and man, I'm tearing it apart right here.
Oh, okay.
I think last time I didn't dip it.
And yeah, the first time I ate it, I didn't dip it in the sauce.
I wasn't even eating it right.
Okay, got some chilies here.
I'm not gonna eat a lot of them.
I'm just gonna throw a couple in there just to kick it up a notch.
The sauce that you dip it in has a couple pieces of tofu in there.
Kind of tough, but in a good way, in a good way.
I think that's the way to do it.
Just scoop it in there.
Dip it.
Use the spoon.
Oh, my.
That is good.
Last bite, last bite.
Man, those fried shallots on top too.
Tasty.
That's a winner.
Let's see if I can get her to smile.
Let's see.
You are the hardest working woman I've ever seen in my life.
Yeah, I got a smile.
I got a smile.
And they were extremely tasty.
Thank you.
I'm looking at the picture.
That must be from like a 90s sitcom that just never made it.
I don't know.
Very random.
Huh.
Okay.
I haven't really made it that far and I keep finding things that I want to eat.
So let's keep going.
The places that I have pinned on my map, let's see where they're at.
Yeah, so those two stars right there, those two flags, that's where I want to go.
Okay, so this is what ChadGBT is telling me.
Steps was a UK pop band formed in 1997.
So I got the era right.
I was way off.
It wasn't a TV show, but it was a UK pop band.
I must have found the square, the center of town.
Over here you have, I don't know what building that is, but you have the man himself, Ho Chi Minh.
The big Viet Minh flag right here.
Nice painting.
Okay, this is another spot that my friend in Hanoi recommended.
This is it right here.
Looks super local.
Another Banh Mi sandwich, I think.
I don't recognize anything up here.
What is that?
I don't know.
Okay, I think this is the special noodles here.
Okay, yeah.
Any place where you have to eat in the alley, I'm sure it's a good one.
But honestly, look how clean it is.
Okay, okay, I'm going to cheat here.
It says the food cart is selling Banh Da Chua Dong, a beloved noodle dish from Hai Phong.
Banh Da Chua Dong literally means freshwater crab noodle soup.
Chua Dong means field crab, a small freshwater crab used to make the rich savory broth.
Okay, there's a lot going on here, isn't there?
I got some shrimp.
I mean, I guess.
Okay, I think that's what the crab was, those small things.
But they don't look like crab to me, I don't know.
These guys right here, is that the freshwater crab?
Yeah, okay.
Yep, that's what it is, okay.
Love the smiles here, love the smiles here.
Okay, this one should do me in.
This should fill me up.
This is a heavy bowl of soup right here.
Let's try the broth, let's try the broth.
Light.
That's good, that's good, okay.
I'm gonna add a little bit of salt here.
They give you some lettuce and some veggies here.
I guess you're just supposed to eat that separately.
Again, I'm kind of confused sometimes with that.
There's a lot going on here.
Like I said, I'm like, what is that?
I have no idea.
Kind of sausage?
Yeah, some kind of sausage, okay.
No idea what that is.
Fish?
No, I'm good.
All right, let's try the noodles.
Heavy, heavy, heavy, heavy.
I like it, there's a lot going on in here.
And it's all pretty good.
So definitely one of my favorites so far.
Fish cake.
A water spinach, I'm guessing is what that is.
Good choice, good choice.
Finished.
Man, came here right in time too.
They are closing the shop.
Man, but that's about as much as I can do too.
I am stuffed, I am stuffed.
