The story of Hansel and Gretel. Once upon a time at the edge of a dark forest lived a poor woodcutter, his wife, and two children, Hansel and Gretel. The stepmother was unkind. She said there was not enough food for all. Hansel heard her cruel plan to leave them in the forest. That night, Hansel gathered shiny pebbles like little stars. In the morning, their parents led them deep into the forest. At night, the pebbles shone, guiding them safely home. But the stepmother grew angry and led them away again. Hansel dropped breadcrumbs, but the birds ate them. The children were lost. They wandered for days. At last, they saw a house made of sweets. Hungry, they nibbled at the walls. Suddenly, a voice called, Who's nibbling at my house? The witch invited them inside with food and beds. But next morning, she locked Hansel in a cage. Each day, she checked his finger, but Hansel tricked her with a bone. The witch grew impatient. Heat the oven, she ordered. She told Gretel to climb in. Gretel pretended not to understand.
