It is our first time in Germany and today we are going to be trying a bunch of German foods.
All the classics that we can find and we've come to this place called Eisgrub.
It's a brewery and they seem to have all the classics so we're gonna check it out.
Starting our day off right with drinks. I got a Riesling
made in the Mainz area and Jeremy got himself a dark beer.
In Germany you would like Riesling from Germany because I really enjoy it
and I don't think it's too sweet and I don't think you will either.
Okay it's not terrible. I still just don't think white wine is my thing
but in terms of white wine it's not that bad.
Since we are in Mainz we are gonna try a couple dishes that are more popular in this area.
Starting with some Spunderkäse.
Which is like a cheese dip from this area that we've had before
but we have not had it in a restaurant yet so we're excited to try it.
When we first got into town my cousin made it.
She said it's like a cream cheese sour cream kind of dip that has paprika and onion powder in it.
It's really nice and creamy a little bit of sour cream taste a little bit of cheese taste.
It's just really savory and nice.
I'm gonna try it with some some of this nice big chunky boy pretzel.
I love how creamy this dip is but the paprika and the onion just gives it a really nice flavor.
This is amazing and if you come across it I know they don't have it
everywhere in Germany but if you come across it you have to try it it's really really good.
We also got the Fleischwurst which is a meat sausage that I think
is supposed to be kind of like bologna.
It's also similar to there's another sausage here called
Leberkäse which I think is like the name is liver cheese but I think it's more like a bologna.
And it's similar to that as well.
It's what my cousin was telling us it comes with potato salad
and you're also supposed to have it with a little bit of mustard.
And as the server politely told us do not eat the shell you have to peel the the casing off of it.
How do you like the Fleischwurst?
I think it's good. I think I do prefer it warm a little bit but it's good both ways.
Yeah warm for the win.
I was surprised that the Fleischwurst is warm but the potato salad is cold.
That is different than some of the other potato salads we've had here
but it does have a really good flavor.
I like the dill and I think there might be chunks of pickle or onion or something in there.
Oh okay.
It's good.
The more that we eat of this the more that it's becoming my favorite thing.
I just really really like that potato salad.
It's so flavorful and the Fleischwurst is very complimentary to it.
Our mains have arrived and we were actually originally going to order more of them
but I think we made the correct decision to only order two things.
I got the Käsespätzle.
This is a little egg noodle with cheese dish and it's basically the Germany's pasta.
I'm not sure if they all have a menthol cheese or not
but that's what the menu said here and fried onions.
It smells like a nice savory grilled onion dish.
Looks really good.
Yeah.
We've had this at a German restaurant in the US
but I don't know how much it compares to the authentic experience.
Does it not compare?
This is a 10 out of 10.
It's just so creamy and the cheese has a little bit of a strong flavor to it.
It's a nice cheese and yeah it's just creamy and delicious.
The noodles are just like soft and tender and everything I wanted them to be.
I feel like if there's anything I've learned in our time in Europe and the UK
the cheese and onion is one of the ultimate flavor combinations.
This is delightful.
It really is.
Cheesy, crunchy with the onions.
That's great.
I just really love those noodles too.
They're just like little bites of heaven.
Our English menu says that if we lay our beers down it means that we want a new one.
Up there, Jeremy.
I have Schweinhaxe which is like a I think fried pork knuckle
which is just a popular thing here.
I've seen numerous people just since we've been sitting here have it
and it looks interesting and I'm down for fried meat I think.
I think it's a days-long process.
I think that they marinate it for several days and then it roasts all day.
Bread?
I'm not even sure how to start this honestly.
So I think the other name for this is either a pork knuckle or a ham hock too.
I don't love the look of it I have to say.
Is that crackling on the top?
I don't like crackling.
That actually looks like some nice meat in there.
Really good, yeah.
Once you get that crackling surface.
It is steaming.
I'm not a huge fan of sauerkraut.
That actually goes together fairly well.
Gives you a little acidity with the other flavors.
It's pretty good.
I didn't realize when it came to the table until it was sitting on my side of the table
how huge this is.
This is the size of an infant's head or something.
It's huge.
I think you'll like the meat.
I'm not sure about the rest of it.
Yeah you know I don't love eating food off of a bone.
Yeah I know you don't.
But this looks very tasty.
I think first impression seeing the outside I was like
that looks like a crunchy bit I won't love but this meat looks nice.
Meat's really good.
It's so savory and tender.
Just the flavor of it it almost reminds me of pot roast.
Kind of yeah.
Yeah.
Like a pork pot roast.
Yeah like a pork pot roast.
Yeah it's just really wow that's really good.
All part tender.
Yeah as we travel I kind of read things of how I think about how my mom would like them
because my mom has what she calls super taste buds.
She's very specific about what she'll eat and I think she would like this
which makes me think a lot of people would probably really enjoy this.
Try a small bite because I know that in the UK I did not like pork crackling.
You'll think it's better than that but I still don't think it's really gonna be your thing.
Yeah I like it.
It's...
Really?
Okay.
Yeah.
You know it actually to me it tastes like a very very crunchy version of a fried chicken skin.
Like when you have fried chicken.
It definitely to me is a lot less scary than the pork scratchings we had in the UK are.
It's pretty tasty but the meat inside is the real highlight.
That was so good but we have one more thing on the agenda
before we can call this a real food day of trying German food.
Mainz is an absolutely beautiful city and it's very surreal to be
in a place that is not very far from where my grandma was born and grew up in.
And if there's one thing that my grandma loved to do it was
Kaffee und Kuchen, coffee and cakes.
And I've noticed since we've been here that my cousin also seems to like this tradition.
It seems to be pretty popular here that you have like a nice little coffee and a cake
in the afternoon.
So we're gonna pick some up and bring some over to my cousins and
we're gonna have a nice little coffee and cake afternoon.
I'm gonna pop into the Dom Cafe.
This cafe is right next to the cathedral.
What a lovely day of trying a lot of very good German foods today.
I'm curious, what of the things that we tried would you be most interested in trying?
Or if we missed something that we should try the next time that we are here in Germany,
leave a comment and let us know.
I mean we still have plenty more to come from Germany but we'll also be back in the future.
Thank you for watching.
Thank you for our patrons for always supporting us and coming along on the adventures.
And I think you should check out this video
where we went to Amsterdam and tried a bunch of Dutch street foods.
It's right over here.
