A closer look at Uncle Mick's Model World, this time at the sea and harbour. Uncle Mick shares tips on how to create water and waves using toilet paper, paint and PVA glue. He makes it sound easy! The result is very realistic!
Uncle Mick builds his models in his garage and he works out there for 6 months whilst the weather is warm enough, and inside over the colder months.
This was the last large-scale model Uncle Mick built in his garage. His next models are built in modules - so he can easily move them to store.

This is your dock, and you've not made your water yet.
All it is, is toilet paper and glue, this, solid.
Build it up into little wiggly bits, and then paint it.
And then you put, you've done it here, haven't you? You've got it wavy there.
Yeah, I've just started a bit in it.
Not complete yet, still needs a bit more on it.
And then, hopefully that fits in there.
And then do you just pour varnish on it?
Yeah, paint it, and then put layers and layers of clear varnish on it to give it depth.
So we will come back and do a progress video of that, won't we?
And then at this bit here, you're gonna...
Well, we won't tell anyone, shall we? We won't tell anyone what you're doing here.
You've got a bull washing powder up there, that's intriguing.
The bookworm, proprietor, Ivy, read them all.
Veruca and Bunyan, shoes of distinction, cobblers to the aristocracy.
Oh my gosh!
That was so funny.
We don't mean it, really, though.
So I'm here with my Uncle Mick, and we've come in for an update.
And he's got everything covered up, because you put things away, don't you,
when the weather starts to get cold, because you're not going to be out here in the freezing cold.
You're not a wally because you built it in the garage, it's the best place to build it.
It's like a magical world.
Then you find other things to do in the winter and stay warm.
So he's gluing a roof back on that he's knocked.
So this is an update.
Now, the beautiful thing I wanted to show everybody now is Uncle Mick's water.
And it's absolutely amazing.
It's something else, this water.
I love it.
How are you making it?
You make it with layers of toilet paper and PVA glue.
Quite several layers, just layer it all up.
And then you pick out the waves with, I've forgotten what the coals do.
That glue, yeah.
That glue over there.
We'll put a picture in.
And literally paint it, and then varnish it.
But they just look so realistic and the colours are beautiful.
And how have you got the colour in it?
You start at the lightest bits, drag it forwards and then water it down a bit.
Put a bit darker, a bit darker.
Until you think it looks about right.
Is it acrylic you've used in there?
It's just those kids, I don't know, student paints.
So it's like acrylic, but it just looks, if you were here,
it's probably not picking it up on this camera as well,
but he's even put lighter bits on the tops of the waves.
Has he got glue there?
He's got a massive glue bottle on the beach.
You'll need amusements to light up.
So we've got the seafront amusement lights on now, it's fab.
That's so cute.
And the lighthouse down there.
And the lighthouse, wait, oh yeah, here.
I'll just zoom out a little bit.
Oh, it's amazing.
That's really great.
The waves are fantastic.
They actually, there's a swell on it, you know,
I don't even have to describe it.
If you could see it, it's amazing.
If you see it across section,
there's even a swell that goes around and hits the beach.
It's really cool.
So you've just spent ages getting that sorted out,
I imagine, I know you say it were easy.
But it's just amazing and it's all like, you know, raised.
Look at that water.
Look at that wave going in.
I mean, obviously I love all your buildings,
but you've just, the attention to detail is unbelievable
and then your rocks and everything,
and you make it all yourself, don't you?
Wait a second, let's have a little look at your rocks.
No, it's okay.
Look at his rocks, they're amazing.
You can just feel them on a mission,
zooming out of that harbour.
It's really great.
So the rocks start off like this over here.
So this area here, that's his cable car.
And he's actually in the middle of building a mountain,
so they're going to be going up this ski lift
up to the top of a mountain.
I better stop before I hit that.
And knock down the ski lift.
I just smashed it up wrong.
Oh, no, really?
I went in the wrong place.
And there's a tunnel coming out there as well,
so I imagine you...
Yeah, that'd be like a cliff face.
Because above here you've got a bit of canal and a barge,
haven't you, and a little farmhouse,
and then over there behind that sheet
is the train station,
and then down that end is the street.
So that's...
It's all covered up for winter at the moment.
I'm waiting for winter to come.
I thought it would come the other week,
that's why I covered it all up.
And then it got warm.
We've had a heat wave, haven't we?
All you need to make that C, though,
is you need that for the tops of the waves.
Okay.
And then just toilet paper and PVA glue,
and you squidge it on layer after layer.
You put a layer of toilet paper,
squidge it with PVA glue,
another layer on top.
When you've got several layers,
then you just shove it,
and it forms mounds...
Ah, right.
...into the wave shapes.
Okay, so it actually gets soaked up with the glue.
It's a bit like paper mashy.
Yeah, it is, basically, yeah.
So...
And then you wait about a week for it to dry.
Yeah, I imagine you do.
Oh, it's fab.
Right, well, thank you very much
for letting us see an update, Uncle Mick.
Thank you.
Yeah.
