#Jonathan’s Japan
In this video, we visit Jonathan’s, one of Japan’s most popular family restaurant chains, and try their breakfast, lunch, and dinner — plus a little bit of bar time at night 🍺
What we love about Jonathan’s (and family restaurants in Japan in general) is how everyone can find something they like. Whether you crave sushi bowls, hearty Western dishes, or Japanese comfort food, they’ve got it all — at reasonable prices and available all day long.
Did you know you can eat breakfast, lunch, and even dinner with drinks at one Japanese family restaurant?
Today, we're spending the whole day at Jonathan's.
From eggs and toast all the way to beer and pizza at night.
Welcome back to TabiEats! I'm Satoshi.
And I'm Shinichi.
Today, we are here at one of the most popular family restaurants here in Japan called Jonathan's.
The last time we did a 24-hour video at Denny's.
And it seems like you guys enjoyed that one.
And so we thought, why not do another one at Jonathan's?
Because this is, after all, one of our favorite family restaurants.
We go here all the time.
So we're going to be starting off with breakfast.
We're going to do lunch.
We're going to be having some drinks.
And of course, dinner.
We're going to be eating all our meals today at Jonathan's.
So we are inside of Jonathan's and ordering breakfast.
Breakfast menu is here.
Breakfast is available until 10.30.
This is special morning set.
And this one is select egg morning.
You can choose the egg dish and variety of starches.
And here is a light morning set.
If you don't want to eat this much, you can choose half toast or light pancake.
If you have a big appetite, you can choose like this.
Like chicken dish.
And if you want to eat Japanese breakfast,
here is the wachoushoku menu.
The Japanese breakfast menu.
Like the tuna donburi or seared salmon.
Like so.
Like I ordered this one today.
Also, you can choose some side dishes.
And all these sets include soup bar and drink bar.
Regularly, I drink coffee in the morning.
But I ordered Japanese set, tekkadon, the tuna donburi.
So I selected Japanese green tea.
It's pretty rare, but this matches with my breakfast.
Good green tea.
So my breakfast, I already mentioned it's Japanese.
This is tekkadon, the tuna donburi.
Pieces of fresh tuna on top of rice.
And three bunch of perilla leaves and nori seaweed.
And it comes with miso soup and other side dish.
It's lotus root and carrot kimpira.
And wasabi.
So and also, they gave us this soy sauce.
Pour soy sauce here.
So first, I sip miso soup, wakame seaweed.
Mmm, good dashi.
Mmm, tasty miso soup.
Fresh tuna and rice cooked perfectly.
This perilla leaf is very good accent.
And wasabi works well.
I like wasabi taste.
Tekkadon, the tuna must be lean type, not fatty type.
And this is like that.
Mmm, crunchy and the nice sesame oil flavor.
I really satisfied my breakfast.
One major reason why I love Jonathan is their drink bar.
It's called the J's Premium Drink Bar.
Of course, there's a variety of coffees, a variety of teas.
Lots of different teas.
I think there's about maybe 11 different types of teas.
And some of my favorites are, of course, the Japanese tea that Satoshi had.
I also love their Taiwanese beauty tea.
It's really good.
They have some non-caffeinated teas as well.
Really, really good.
They have matcha latte, hojicha latte.
They have a variety of sodas.
And for breakfast, they have a variety of juices.
The drink bar is where you can pick up your wet towel.
I also forgot to mention in the morning, you also have a soup bar if you want some.
If you just want water, you can also get this at the drink bar.
I decided to get the select morning.
And you can choose between sunny side up or scrambled.
I got sunny side up.
This comes with a slice of bacon, sausage, a little bit of salad.
And I decided to go with toast.
Sometimes we get pancakes.
It's pretty good here.
But my favorite is their toast.
And it comes with butter and jam if you want.
Oh, I also forgot to mention I also got their acai yogurt.
I actually love that.
You can get that as an option.
It's a pretty small serving, but it is delicious and perfect for morning time.
It comes with acai yogurt on the bottom, fresh fruits on the top.
Delicious.
So I got the Taiwanese tea today.
And I also got their like berry juice.
Looks like grape juice.
Oh, that's good.
I haven't had grape juice in a long time.
I gotta start off with my toast because I love the toast here.
Look at that.
It's a pretty thick slice of toast.
Toasted perfectly.
And I love butter.
So I'm going to add this Hokkaido butter on top of my toast and strawberry jam.
The outside is a little bit crispy and toasty.
The bread is soft and really moist.
Always good.
They do give you soy sauce if you like to eat your eggs with soy sauce.
Actually, a lot of people in Hawaii like to do that.
Well, I prefer my eggs with a little bit of salt.
All right, let's dig into the egg.
So this is a sunny side up egg.
You can get it cooked more if you want, but that's like perfect for me.
Breakfast.
Perfectly cooked.
That's your sausage.
The sausage is snappy, smoky, super flavorful.
And this is one slice of bacon.
I do wish they had like another slice of bacon.
Mmm.
Smoky.
That's so good.
I could have like three more slices of that.
This is the acai yogurt.
So I'm gonna have a bite with mango, acai, and a little bit of yogurt from the bottom here.
You also have like a little bit of the cornflakes in there.
That's perfect.
I'm so satisfied.
FYI, the drink bar is all you can drink.
You can drink as much as you want.
And one more information.
The menu is written in Japanese, but don't worry.
You order via tablet and the tablet is English available.
One more thing we forgot to mention are the robot waiters.
The robots will bring the food for you.
That's something you will see at All Jonathan.
All right, we walked around for a few hours and we're hungry again.
We are back here for lunch.
So here they have a special lunch menu.
So the first page you have the light meal lunches,
which includes something like a tonkatsu sandwich.
So that's something that some of you might like.
If you're in the mood for something Japanese, they have a curry udon as well,
which is pretty good too.
This is what we recommend.
You choose something for the main menu.
You choose something for the side.
It includes drink bar as well as a soup bar.
You can choose from hamburgers to grilled chicken,
to gratin to some Japanese dishes,
omurice as well as BLT sandwich.
For side menus, you have salads, soups,
even a mini pizza fried potatoes and even dessert.
The next one is called the petite set.
This one you choose from this page three items you want.
They are all smaller sizes.
So you can combine them and have something like this, this or this.
And if you want something meaty, you have the grilled lunch sets,
which is a hamburgers and grilled chicken.
You have like pasta lunches.
You have the gratin and doria lunches.
They even have a hirakatsu tonkatsu as well as a grilled fish teishoku.
And you have the miso chicken, which is also recommended.
And this is the most price value starting from 945 yen.
That includes the drink set.
This is the menu of the day.
My lunch is ichinichibun no ryokoushoku yasai ga toreru doria.
Long name.
It means doria with vegetables.
Doria is a rice casserole dish.
This lunch menu includes a drink bar as well as a soup bar.
This is the soup.
This is the consomme with corn.
Oh, nice umami of corn and onion.
I also ordered a side dish.
The side dish is dessert.
So it comes later.
Broccoli, pumpkin and tomato.
And center, this is spinach.
Nice creamy texture.
Bechamel sauce is lightly seasoned with salt.
And the salt amount is perfect for me.
It's combined with rice and tomato.
Tomato adds a little bit tanginess.
The tanginess is combined with this bechamel sauce.
Oh, some kind of sauce here.
Looks like demi-glace sauce.
Sweetness and richness.
Two umami combined into one.
This doria is one of my favorite dishes in Jorasan.
Another reason why I like Jonathan's drink bar is that they have decaffeinated coffee.
So I got iced decaf.
And it's actually really good.
I can drink like three of these.
Also like Satoshi mentioned, the soup comes with your meal.
And this soup is kind of like a vegetable consomme.
I can taste lots of vegetables in here.
So it's really really flavorful.
So I chose their tandoori chicken and Mexican pilaf.
This is like one of my go-tos.
So it's basically a nice piece of chicken thigh grilled to perfection with tandoori flavors.
This Mexican pilaf is super flavorful.
Comes with corn, a little bit of vegetables on the side.
And for my side dish, I got their roast beef potato salad.
It comes with a little bit of mustard.
You got like three slices of perfectly cooked roast beef.
That's some green onions on the top.
And below that, you have your potato salad and a little bit of onions as well.
Let's put a little bit of mustard.
I love this.
I really really do.
I think the onions are marinated with some kind of dressing.
So there's a little bit of acidity.
So it's also super super refreshing.
Maybe it's from the mustard.
I don't know.
But there's some kind of acidity.
The roast beef is cooked perfectly.
And the really good potato salad.
All right, let me cut into this chicken.
Look at that.
Look how perfect it's grilled.
This is probably like my top three things to eat at Jonathan's.
Oh, it's so good.
I haven't had this in a while.
It's so flavorful.
I love the spices that they use.
I feel like I'm in an Indian restaurant.
And it's so tender.
And the outside is like charred.
And it's a little bit crispy.
Next bite is the Mexican pilaf here.
I don't know if it's a Mexican.
But it's just really good.
Yeah, it's just really nicely seasoned.
And slightly spiced rice.
That's good.
I guess there's a little bit Mexican flavor.
Whatever it is, though.
It's really good.
One of my favorite dishes.
And my side dish came.
It's this gigantic soft serve.
Morimori soft cream.
Oh, very rich milk taste.
This is good.
Refreshing.
The milk taste is really good.
And not overly sweet.
Just right sweetness for me.
This time, from drink bar, I took coffee.
Coffee and soft serve.
Avocado in my mouth.
You know, I was thinking,
we're gonna get proper dessert for dinner.
But I couldn't resist.
Satoshi's eating his soft serve,
which is actually amazing.
I just had to get their Shiratama Anmitsu.
So Anmitsu is one of my favorite things.
Also, you don't really find Anmitsu
usually at other family restaurant change.
So I thought I feature this one.
It's one of my favorite things to eat.
I sometimes like to come to Jonathan
to have green tea and Anmitsu.
This actually comes with a proper cup
of Japanese green tea.
So Anmitsu is a very traditional Japanese dessert.
It comes with kanten, which is made of agar.
Cubes of agar with anko,
which is sweetened azuki bean paste.
On the top, you got fruits.
You got some black beans.
You got some mochi balls.
And finally, you can pour over the kuromitsu sauce,
which is like Japanese black sugar sauce.
You also have a marshmallow cherry.
Always, always a cherry.
Oh, what is this here?
I think this is like an apricot.
Okay, so that's the cubes of agar
with a little bit of that kuromitsu black sugar sauce.
My mother would approve.
This is also one of my mother's favorite Japanese desserts.
So refreshing.
The kuromitsu gives it a really nice,
deep brown sugar flavor, which I love.
Next bite is a combination of the agar and the anko.
So good.
I love anko.
Finally, the shiratama mochi ball with that kuromame black bean
and a little bit of anko and the brown sugar.
Nice, squishy, bouncy.
So many textures and nice flavors.
The green tea is the perfect ending to this amazing lunch.
We got one more meal to go.
Let's go walk off some calories.
So, lunch at Jonathan's actually really satisfying.
It really, really is.
I like the various selections.
You can choose like Japanese food, Western food,
like sandwiches, even like udon and ramen.
But anyway, it doesn't end there.
A lot of people come back in the evening,
not just to eat, but also to drink.
So we're gonna come back in a few hours for dinner time
so we can eat and also drink.
Hello again.
So it's been a few hours.
We actually went back home.
Once to rest and we got some work done,
but it is now dinner time.
And fortunately, we're super hungry
and we're looking forward to getting some dinner at Jonathan's.
And bar.
And bar, that's right.
Drink some alcohol.
Yay!
Here, this is a special menu.
Jonah bar.
Yes, they have lots of drinks.
Of course, beer, wine, highball, and cocktails.
And of course, I drink not beer.
This time, I ordered highball.
Shinichi ordered otonano ginger scotch.
Cheers!
Nice.
I was contemplating whether I should have alcohol or not.
I decided not to have alcohol because I'm a little bit exhausted.
And when I'm tired and I drink, I tend to feel faint.
So I got this one, the otonano ginger ale,
which means adult ginger ale.
Cheers.
It's basically a mocktail.
In addition to the drink menu,
you also have a bar menu and a family restaurant.
So that makes Jonathan's so amazing.
You have things like caprese.
You have a little salad.
You got like a roast beef with potato salad.
But we got a couple here that we really, really love.
And one is the fried chicken
and the mozzarella toast with butter soy sauce.
So this is basically like a bread roll.
And it has butter and soy sauce.
And it's really delicious.
At first, we're kind of like confused as to what it is.
But it's really, really delicious.
Look at that.
On the inside, there is cheese.
So it's cheese, butter, and soy sauce.
And they toast this.
And it is beautiful.
We had a good day.
Itadakimasu.
This bun always comes out nice and toasty and warm.
The outside is crusty.
You guys hear that crunch, right?
But the flavors of combining the cheese and butter and soy sauce.
There's also a little bit of acidity in here.
I'm not sure where that's coming from.
It's like, I don't know.
It's like Japanese garlic bread without the garlic.
Does that make any sense?
Oh, that makes me so happy.
So one more appetizer is a fried chicken.
Ah, Junna-san.
Chicken dish is very good.
Here is fried chicken.
Two pieces of fried chicken.
Size is pretty large.
Outside, really crispy.
And inside, juicy and tender.
And seasoned pepper and salt.
Very nicely.
Wow.
It's very good snack with alcohol drink.
Really tender and juicy and nice chicken flavor.
This fried chicken is very good.
All right, guys.
This is one of our favorite things from Jonathan.
This is the margarita pizza.
It's a simple pizza and it's from a family restaurant.
Of course, you can expect like the best pizza.
But this is pretty damn good.
I really like this a lot.
I don't know why.
The thing you guys have to do is go to Jonathan.
Try this and let us know in the comments.
What do you think of this pizza?
Good pizza sauce flavor.
It's tomatoey.
It's cheesy.
Get a little bit of basil.
Really nice crust as well.
And Satoshi was kind enough to get us some red wine to pair with the pizza.
Yes.
Yeah, red wine.
Super cheap.
I think it's 200 yen.
Incredible.
So this is deep fried chicken, mizore.
Which is a daikon radish that's grated with some nameko mushrooms.
And this sauce is almost like a ponzu, but not really.
It's like a soy sauce based sauce with some vegetables on the side.
Eggplant, red bell pepper, and okra.
Oh my god.
You guys see that crunch?
It is so crispy.
So light.
Even though it's deep fried, it's not oily at all.
And that mizore sauce makes it so refreshing.
Like Satoshi mentioned, they really do chicken well here at Jonathan's.
My dish is hamburger steak.
100% Hokkaido beef and deep fried black tiger shrimp with tartar sauce.
And this one comes with potato salad, broccoli, and corn.
Put a little bit of sauce.
Little bit.
I like this beef taste.
Really clean beef taste.
Tender.
The Jonathan's 100% Hokkaido beef salad burger steak, hamburger steak, is really tasty.
Deep fried shrimp with tartar sauce.
I love ebi fry.
Yes, very much.
This shrimp, amazing.
To tell the truth, I have eaten this 100% beef hamburger steak once,
but I've never eaten this deep fried shrimp.
It's really good.
Very plump beef.
Outside, saku-saku.
And the tartar sauce combination is so good.
It's very much with this shrimp taste.
This ebi fry, I love this.
My main, main, main dish is this tonkatsu set.
This one comes with tonkatsu, shredded cabbage salad, broccoli.
This is side dish and comes with rice and miso soup.
Also, sauce and mustard.
This is wakame soup.
Nice umami dashi taste.
So take one piece.
The panko is really crispy, light and non-oily.
Very good.
After I chewed five times, the very nice pork umami taste.
It has a natural sweetness of pork.
Wow, dessert time.
Dessert time, guys.
So we got two.
We actually wanted to get something else, but one was sold out today.
But it's really good.
Anyway, we got their chocolate cake, which is divine.
It's like a gato chocolate, so it's very rich and thick.
And it's served with berries, a chocolate sauce and some whipped cream.
And this one is classic chocolate parfait.
That looks good.
I love parfait.
I love chocolate.
This is perfect for me.
Yes, there's chocolate ice cream.
You got a chocolate gato or brownie.
You got bananas, whipped cream, chocolate fudge.
And you have, like, maybe vanilla ice cream in the center.
More ice cream, whipped cream and more chocolate sauce.
How is it? Good?
Nice chocolatey taste.
Oh, yeah?
Yeah.
So I'm gonna just take this with me.
That's a very good part.
I feel like this is chocolate cake.
Gato chocolate?
Definitely gato chocolate.
Rich and thick and chocolatey and not too sweet.
I want to scoop all the layers in one time.
It's a little impossible.
It's too deep.
But looks nice.
Bottom part.
The milky taste is really good.
Really? Is it milk saucer?
Yeah, it's refreshing.
That's delicious.
I just love that there's so many components to this dessert.
So this gato chocolate, this is my third time having this.
It's one of my favorite desserts at Jonathan's.
I love that combination of that rich chocolate cake with the blueberry and the whipped cream.
The tartness, sweetness combination.
Nice.
I want to say this gato chocolate is a dense, very rich chocolate cake.
Yeah.
In a very good way.
So we spent the entire day eating at Jonathan's family restaurant.
You know, the last time we were at Denny's, you know, it was a blast.
We discovered so much good food there.
But this time at Jonathan's, we also discovered a lot of good food.
And what I like is that there are differences between Jonathan and Denny's.
Don't you agree?
True, true.
Yeah, I agree.
And the family restaurant is a very good option to eat dinner with family.
Because everybody can eat here.
Everybody can eat what they want.
Somebody can have pizza.
One person have Japanese food.
Even if a ramen, they have udon.
And if you just feel like eating pancakes and dessert, you can do that too.
I really enjoyed all day eating at Jonathan's.
Yeah, so did I.
By the way, guys, have you ever eaten at Jonathan's here in Japan?
