Hey guys, this is Rick from Wild Great Wall.
Welcome to Hongya Cave, a place that feels like it came straight out of a dream, or maybe
a video game.
With glowing lights, wooden buildings stacked into a cliffside, and the vibe of a neon wonderland.
It's no wonder people call this place Chongqing's cyberpunk wonderland.
But what is Hongya Cave?
Why is it so famous?
And how do you explore it without getting totally lost?
Let's dive in and find out.
First, where are we?
Hongya Cave is located in Chongqing, one of the biggest and most unique cities in China.
It sits at the meeting point of two mighty rivers, the Yangtze and the Jialing, surrounded
by steep mountains and tall buildings.
And right in the middle of it all is this, a 11-floor architectural wonder clinging to
the hillside.
But here's the twist, Hongya Cave isn't a cave at all.
It's a multi-level complex built in the traditional style of the Ming and Qing dynasties, with
wooden stilt houses rising layer by layer.
It was once a spot for river traders and old streets, and now it's been turned into one
of the most iconic sights in Chongqing.
Come hungry?
One of the best things to do in Hongya Cave is eat, and I mean really eat.
Make your way to the 4th floor, that's where you'll find local street food at its best.
Spicy grilled squid, Chongqing-style noodles, lamb skewers, tofu on a stick, sweet rice
cakes, the list goes on.
And let's not forget Chongqing's famous hotpot.
It's spicy, it's oily, and it's unforgettable.
If you love heat, this is your dream come true.
Travel tip, the food stalls get busy around 6-8 pm, so arrive a bit earlier to beat the
crowds and snag the best bites.
Getting around, a maze of surprises.
Hongya Cave has 11 levels, and trust me, it's easy to get lost here.
But that's kind of the point.
Each level has something different.
The upper floors are filled with rooftop restaurants and bars.
The middle levels have souvenir shops, tea houses, and cafes.
The lower floors open out to the riverside promenade with gorgeous views of the bridges
and city skyline.
And yes, there are hidden staircases, secret tunnels, and old-style corridors that twist
and turn everywhere.
Travel tip, elevators do exist, but they're tricky to find.
Try to enter from level 1 or level 11 depending on where you're coming from.
If you're near Jifeng by pedestrian street, start from the top.
A real-life cyberpunk dream.
When the sun goes down, Hongya Cave turns into a glowing lantern.
The warm yellow lights and neon signs reflect off the river, and suddenly, you feel like
you're inside a futuristic movie.
This is where the cyberpunk magic happens, the contrast between the ancient wooden buildings
and the ultra-modern skyline around them.
People say it reminds them of scenes from Blade Runner, Spirited Away, or a video game
like Cyberpunk 2077.
Photo tip, for the best night shots, head to the Qiancimen Bridge just across the water.
It offers the perfect wide-angle view of Hongya Cave lit up from top to bottom.
Hidden waterfall and street vibes.
One of the coolest surprises.
There's an indoor waterfall built into the shopping section.
You can walk right up to it, and the light shows around a change every few minutes.
It's a perfect place to cool off and snap some unique photos.
Just outside, the area feels like a night market, with street performers, souvenir stands,
and people just hanging out.
It's buzzing with energy, but it never feels overwhelming.
Final tips before you go.
Getting there, easiest way is by Metro Line 2 to Linjiangmen Station or Line 6 to Xiaoxizi.
It's a short walk from either.
Best time to visit, late afternoon into evening.
Catch the sunset and stay for the lights.
Entrance fee, free to enter, but bring cash or WeChat pay for food and souvenirs.
What to wear, comfortable shoes.
There are lots of stairs.
So there you have it, Hongya Cave, a mix of ancient charm and futuristic glow, tradition,
and street food, lost alleys and big city energy.
It's more than just a tourist spot, it's a symbol of Chongqing, and one of the most
unforgettable places in China.
If you ever find yourself here, don't rush.
Wander.
Get lost.
Soak it all in.
And let the magic of this cyberpunk wonderland take over.
