Long ago, in the great city of Babylon, there was a proud king named Belshazzar.
One night, King Belshazzar held a huge feast for a thousand of his nobles.
The music was loud, the food was plenty, and everyone was laughing and dancing.
Then, the king shouted,
Bring the gold and silver cups from God's temple in Jerusalem. Let's drink from them.
The servants hurried and brought out the holy cups, the ones taken from the temple of God.
The king and his guests drank from them and praised idols made of gold, silver, bronze and stone.
Then, out of nowhere, a mysterious hand appeared in mid-air.
Just a hand. It began to write strange words on the wall of the palace.
The king's face turned pale. His heart pounded.
His knees began to shake so hard they knocked together.
Someone, he shouted, tell me what this means.
He called his wise men, magicians and astrologers.
But none of them could read the writing. No one knew what it meant.
Then the queen mother entered the hall and said,
O king, don't be afraid. There is a man in your kingdom named Daniel.
He has the spirit of the holy God in him.
In your father's time, he could explain mysteries. Call for him.
So the king sent for Daniel.
When Daniel stood before the king, Belshazzar said,
I've heard you can explain mysteries.
If you tell me what this writing means, I'll give you riches and make you the third ruler in my kingdom.
But Daniel replied calmly, You may keep your gifts, O king.
But I will tell you what the writing means.
Daniel looked at the glowing words on the wall and said,
O king, the most high God gave your father, King Nebuchadnezzar, greatness and glory.
But when he became proud, God humbled him.
You, Belshazzar, knew all this, yet you did not honor God.
You took the sacred cups from his temple and praised idols instead of the living God.
Because of this, God has sent you this message.
Daniel turned to the wall and read, MENI, MENI, TEKEL, PARSIN.
Then Daniel explained, MENI means God has numbered your kingdom and brought it to an end.
TEKEL means you have been weighed on the scales and found wanting.
Parsin means your kingdom will be divided and given to the Medes and Persians.
That very night, the words came true.
While the feast was still going on, the army of the Medes entered the city of Babylon.
King Belshazzar was killed, and Darius the Mede became the new ruler.
Just as Daniel had said,
The story of the writing on the wall reminds us that God is in control of every kingdom,
and he sees everything we do.
We must always honor and obey God, for he is the true king of all the earth.
He read the writing on the wall
His truth will never
